The Jeremy Kyle Show. Middle class man shouts at poor people who aren’t terribly bright, for not being perfect humans. So pleased it ended.

On X Factor and BGT when they used to show ‘funny’ auditions of people who believed they had talent but really didn’t so got laughed at. They then brought them back for the final to do a humiliating routine live so they could be laughed at more.

Supernanny. Childless woman who can barely speak properly pulls lemon faces, tells parents they’re shit and Instills sudden and sharp changes in the child’s home where actual camera are focussing on them when they’re distraught and upset

Sun sea and suspicious parents. Mum and dad spying on their adult children from a rooftop in Greece whilst said child gets off with a stranger. CREEPY!

It was really common to hear the R word in the 90s, plus using 'gay' as an insult for anything and everything.

Georgyporky · 30/11/2022 19:03

Some terms might seem unacceptable now, but at least they were accurate.

Learning difficulties, challenging behaviour are very euphemistic & disguise the real problems.

"Mixed race" is also misleading. A family member is ultra PC, but was unhappy when it was pointed out that her son was - English/Irish.

Do you remember when Heat did a set of free stickers and one of them was “Help! Harvey’s going to eat me!” about Jordan’s son? They were pulled up on it at the time but amazing it even got to print

I'm in absolute shock at this! Katie Price is pretty obviously not an angel but her treatment at the hands of the press over the years has been disgusting!

Cramming kids into the back of the car, the more the merrier.
Young kids driving tractors and balancing on farm machinery. How none of my cousins got killed is a miracle.

In the.boot of an estate car!

When I started in 1994 the HeadTeacher openly disapproved of women wearing trousers. Of course I made a point of buying new trousers suits - so I was super, super smart and he couldn't complain about professionalism- and parading past him at every opportunity. Go that 22 year old me! 👏

My friend got sent home from work experience around 1993 for wearing trousers! The boss had instructed his secretary to tell her to "go home and put on a little skirt".

Fireworks

Men openly displaying pictures of topless women in the rest areas at work and making remarks about the models in the pictures and their bodies. 1990s so not that long ago really. It was seen as part of factory culture and not a big deal.

In the.boot of an estate car!

Hmm...Blush 20+ yrs ago I briefly (and with the agreement of the child) shut a 7yo in the boot of my car to trick his mum...she got the shock of her life when I asked her to open it to get some drinks and he shot out. Grin

ChristmasCwtch · 30/11/2022 19:07

Smoking on planes 🤮 So disgusting!! Think it got banned around 1996

Ericaequites · 30/11/2022 19:08

Tanning beds/booths

Stilettos before six o’ clock

Child beauty pageants

Drag Queens

Not offering a wholesome breakfast to all pupils at state schools

Requiring Y7s with Y4 or below reading levels to take an MFL instead of additional English to consolidate their reading and writing skills in the official national language first

Better education for all secondary students that doesn’t try to prepare everyone for university and pushing theory over practical skills

the Kardashians

Luther1990 · 30/11/2022 19:08

Lockdown. The state putting people into 'zones' and restricting their right to visit friends and family.

I was just showing my other half a clip of the 'bend and snap' from legally blond, a film I loved. They use the R word in that and it really stood out watching back.

Boxofsockss · 30/11/2022 19:09

Jimmy savile. He’s always given me massive creepy vibes. I’m a 90s kid and do not really recall
him when I was growing up but as an adult and being aware of him (before everything came out about him) I just thought he was absolutely revolting and couldn’t understand how others didn’t see what a weirdo he was! Of course now everyone knows he is but surely just by looking at him, you would have got weird vibes??

TheDouglasChater · 30/11/2022 19:09

American 'baby pageants' for children, absolutely fucking grim.

Children and toddlers being paraded around a stage like cattle including a swimwear round, in front of an adult judging panel.

Not to mention the 'special juice' these kids are pumped with by their own parents to keep the poor wee things awake during these long, drawn out days.

How in living hell is this allowed?

Vile.

I’m not saying it was normal. I’m saying it was seen as ‘ok’ since most of my family members and their friends would drive around uninsured and without licenses before the 21st century.

I questioned my mum about it once and she said “oh everyone did it back then”.

I think that may have only been your family, that has never been a thing I've come across apart from twocers and other criminal types

A v shy 18yo me worked in an open plan office with that type of "builders" calenders pinned up (1990).
A decade lated, one of my male colleagues rifled through my shopping and displayed my new underwear to the other "lads" in the office while I was making them Brew

Around here, kids still drive tractors and farm machinery!

Boooooot · 30/11/2022 19:11

@FlissyPaps i also know a lot of people who drove around without licenses. I’m from a “rougher” area though!

Tara336 · 30/11/2022 19:11

Drag as well why is it considered ok?

Handsnotwands · 30/11/2022 19:12

Yes to the monetising of children / family life in the name of advertising

Drag as well why is it considered ok?

Fair point...it's sexual appropriation, surely?

donttellmehesalive · 30/11/2022 19:13

In the 70s no one wore seatbelts in cars. Kids clambered about on seats. Babies were thrown in in carrycots. Drink-driving also ok. Vinyl seats hotter than the sun. Smoking in cars.

What does Jo Frost’s lack of children have to do with anything? It doesn’t make her any less qualified a nanny.

Exactly - some of the best nannies are childless because the live-in type job means they can't start their own families.
