Things in RECENT times you can’t quite believe we’re seen as ‘ok’

The Jeremy Kyle Show. Middle class man shouts at poor people who aren’t terribly bright, for not being perfect humans. So pleased it ended.

On X Factor and BGT when they used to show ‘funny’ auditions of people who believed they had talent but really didn’t so got laughed at. They then brought them back for the final to do a humiliating routine live so they could be laughed at more.

Supernanny. Childless woman who can barely speak properly pulls lemon faces, tells parents they’re shit and Instills sudden and sharp changes in the child’s home where actual camera are focussing on them when they’re distraught and upset

Sun sea and suspicious parents. Mum and dad spying on their adult children from a rooftop in Greece whilst said child gets off with a stranger. CREEPY!

That this is what passed as a reasonable Christmas decoration for young children to make!

Flammable tinsel (no flame retardant in those days) and some candles. I mean what could possibly go wrong?

I remember that one! I didn’t make it though. Good job looking at it….

Who did this?

who can barely speak properly

From your OP.

Also a recurrent theme whenever she's discussed on here

Smoking in public places on buses in resturants, in cinemas pubs, as someone who never smoked and loathed it i cant believe it was allowed for so long.Thank goodness its better now though id personally like it totally banned.

And how did i never notice how women still didnt have many rights and were considered their husbands property. Maybe it was because i grew up with a dad years ahead of his time who thought women as good as men,and never ever controlled my mum. And he certainly didnt consider her his property and he was far more easy going with me than most dads of his generation.

That Band Aid song was on the radio this morning, do they know it's Christmas...how is this still being played, it is very problematic when you listen to it Confused

It really is

Oh dear, OP- looks like the thread didn't go as planned. You might know that MNetters these days can't keep anything light-hearted...what a shame- it could have been quite a fun whimsical threa

Well if we’re not doing light hearted, in for a penny….

The US Supreme Court only banned the execution of children in 2005.

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 13:09

That the Royal Family are exempt from equality legislation.

marktayloruk · 02/12/2022 13:15

One - we should all be exempt from equality legislation.
Two- as a 63 year old lifelong nonsmoker I believe that all restrictions passed on it in my lifetime should be repealed. If I can resist temptation so can others.

YouSoundLovely · 02/12/2022 13:30

In the very recent past and the present:

Incredibly pedantic school uniform rules. Teachers standing at the gates checking brands/types of shoe. Pupils having to ask permission to remove their blazers in the heat (!).

The use of housing as a route to wealth.

Absence from work through illness being a disciplinary issue.

Smoking being just fine as long as it's outside.

Hopping into the car to go to the shop 5 mins' walk down the road (mobility issues excepted, obviously).

Being so institutionally begrudging of people with disabilities' right to live with dignity that we (societally) put them through repeated gotcha 'assessments' for their benefits.

Letting Putin get away with literal murder for gas/oligarchs' money. It taking his starting a full-scale war for the folly of that one to dawn.

Voluntourism.

I’m not saying it was normal. I’m saying it was seen as ‘ok’ since most of my family members and their friends would drive around uninsured and without licenses before the 21st century.

I questioned my mum about it once and she said “oh everyone did it back then”.

err...... no they didn't.!!

I realise the lyrics are somewhat controversial but apparently they rushed the lyrics off in a about ten minutes ,it's more important to remember why the song was written ,people were literally starving to death and band aid raised million s to feed them.

Until 1993 you could buy used schoolgirls' underwear from vending machines in Japan. They banned it but people still report seeing these machines occasionally even now.

I watched a document about that recently. Most of them were a con, ie not actually school girls at all. There was some undercover footage of the production room. Some women in their fifties or sixties by the look of them were taking pairs of knickers, rubbing them between their legs for a bit and then sealing them in a container with a photo of a school girl.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/12/2022 14:16

Haven't read through all of it, but have highly flammable kids' fancy dress costumes been covered yet?

Due to a loophole, they are categorised as toys rather than clothing, because it means they can be produced more cheaply and don't have to adhere to the same safety standards. It's absolutely immoral and there have been a number of cases of kids suffering serious burns.

When DS went through a superhero dressing up phase, it was themed PJs or nothing as far as I was concerned.

A quite large proportion of the whole world lining up to have some experimental soup injected into their and their children’s veins.

  1. It's not actually injected into the vein.
  1. I'm pretty sure I would be dead or long term disabled without it, so I'm incredibly grateful for my 'experimental soup'.

This is the least surprising thing in the world, like the fact that was never actually Sexy Suki (21) on the phone sex line but Bored Barbara (61) who's taking the call while doing the ironing 😂

In current times - online accounts where the main focus is the child/children. Like mummy blogs/vlogs/you tube channels. Stuff like Ryan's World. No child is old enough to consent to have themselves and their lives online so much like that. They are exploited for cash. The relationship between parent and child gets ruined, as the parent often treats the child like an employee/simply a means to get rich. Not to mention that they are often followed by thousands and thousands of predators, some of which have no qualms about messaging them with vile, vile things.

We are going to see more and more of these children speak out as they reach adulthood, and I expect there will even be laws introduced in the near future to prevent it from happening.

And that’s why none of my pics of DD are on social media or any other platform online.

It amazes me how
much of their lives people put online now.

I always thought it was an empty tuna can that they used…

Nowadays much that was seen as virtuous is now problematic and that was never predictable at the time.

I wonder what views that are mainstream now will be problematic in a couple of decades’ time.

Best we all just keep our mouths shut online really…

With speaking out, I doubt there will be many children doing that because they aren't the ones opening DMs.

And hopefully the children do actually get the money they make too.

But yes it is often exploitative and I get the impression these YouTube/Instagram sometimes have another child to keep the attention going

Oh and they always say 'we won't be sharing baby's face' and as soon as it's born they plaster it all over their story, videos, posts daily...

Telling boys they can be girls and girls they can be boys. And boys and girls that they can be neither a boy or a girl. And everyone being told it’s transphobic if they don’t go along with that. Puberty blockers, hormones, trans ideology. The amount of people who go along with it all. 🤯

I'm so glad other people hate this as much as I do.

Indeed I think 99% of the population would agree with you. Unfortunately it’s often the 1% who shout the loudest.

CruCru · 02/12/2022 18:16

Problem is that I am properly middle aged but still think of my schooldays as recent.

I was at secondary in the early nineties and am a bit horrified by how many teachers got off with the pupils. The head of games got caught shagging a year 10 in the gym twice before he was fired.

A science teacher was having an affair with another teacher and a sixth form girl attacked her in a classroom - he said she was a lunatic but someone else had seen him in a pub with the sixth former. In both cases everyone talked about the girl.

I first encountered sexism when I started work in 1999. I was the only girl graduate in my team so they said I would need to sort out the post when the secretary wasn’t there (she was never bloody there but that’s another story). The men talked about football constantly (real and the fantasy football league) and looked affronted when I said it was a bit boring.
