Hi,

Any sane thoughts would be appreciated.

I have an important event on Wednesday. I ordered a critical item to be delivered last week with next day delivery, but Sod’s Law dictated it will be delivered this Wednesday itself due to Black Friday delays. I’m fuming with the company, they haven’t even offered to refund the delivery.

I can reschedule the appointment but it will be in about 4 weeks. I would lose money due to the short notice cancellation and also waste a day of annual leave.

What do you think Royal Mail would do if I visited the delivery office at like 6am on Wednesday with ID in hopes of collecting my order instead of it going out for delivery? I’m just trying to see if I can still get it on time.

Why would you offer next day delivery then?

Because it gives the customer the choice of how quickly they want to receive their parcel after dispatch? Confused

I would be very suspicious of a company offering next day delivery and not actually dispatching it to be delivered the next day. Most reputable online companies offer next day delivery before a certain cut off time. There is no t&cs about it not actually getting it the next day. If I was wanting to buy from a company that offered next day delivery but not actually getting it next day I wouldn't order and think they are getting more money off people.

Take Amazon as an example of a popular website offering Next Day Delivery.

Their Terms of Use/Service specifically state:

Please note that unless otherwise stated on the website, delivery estimates are just that. They are not guaranteed delivery times and should not be relied upon as such.

Yes but they don't usually dispatch 2 weeks after an order and call it next day delivery. Prime would never have been a thing if it was "get your stuff quickly (after we take our sweet time packing it)" I've used companies that have slow dispatch times because things are handmade or personalised etc. But those companies don't boast about next day delivery. It's an option but not a selling point.

My items are both handmade and personalised. The delivery date is automatically calculated at the checkout - so 2 weeks dispatch + 2-3 days standard delivery - or 1 day if you choose the next day option 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wow, I think you're getting an unreasonably hard time here OP. You ordered your item in plenty of time, you paid extra for next day delivery. You did everything right to ensure you had the item well within the timescale needed, even allowing for strikes and Black Friday. Contrary to accusations from PPs I don't see you using this as a 'Royal Mail bashing' thread - you simply asked for advice on how to retrieve your item.

I would complain to the company and ask for an immediate refund of the next day delivery charge - clearly they are in breach of their terms as they despatched the item far too late for that to be a possibility.

Then I would try to see if you could source the item anywhere locally. If not, then I would call my local sorting office/post office for advice as soon as you are able and see what they suggest. Some are far more flexible than others about collecting in person in my experience.

^^ This. And also I do think there are a lot of people on this thread who can't read at all. OP was not being rude about RM at all (or the strike).

Yeah makes sense. But you haven't got 'next day delivery' plastered all over the homepage, presumably? Just an option at the checkout. It's a completely different expectation than ordering from argos or amazon etc.

Crikey there's a wilful lack of comprehension on this thread -

chikp · 30/11/2022 08:00

Next do "Next Day Delivery" properly. There's a cut off time. You clearly choose a day you want it delivered. If it's not available it isn't an option.
