royal mail advice

Hi,

Any sane thoughts would be appreciated.

I have an important event on Wednesday. I ordered a critical item to be delivered last week with next day delivery, but Sod’s Law dictated it will be delivered this Wednesday itself due to Black Friday delays. I’m fuming with the company, they haven’t even offered to refund the delivery.

I can reschedule the appointment but it will be in about 4 weeks. I would lose money due to the short notice cancellation and also waste a day of annual leave.

What do you think Royal Mail would do if I visited the delivery office at like 6am on Wednesday with ID in hopes of collecting my order instead of it going out for delivery? I’m just trying to see if I can still get it on time.

OP posts:

Call 111 or visit A&E if you feel unsafe...

Yep. Won't get the medication any faster. I'll just get bounced back to my mental healthcare team like the last time the crisis team came out and did SFA. I have a thread on it.

She isn't complaining about Royal Mail!!!

Who then? Who is the OP complaining about? Because conveniently they failed to bother naming the company they have an issue with!!!

Ponesta · 29/11/2022 08:49

No idea who she's complaining about although it would be interesting to know. But it's not Royal Mail.

In the 2.5 years I've been reading threads on Mumsnet, several times I have felt compelled to make an account but then the feeling passes almost immediately. There was something about the responses to this post, though... Why are people so snippy? Is it that you are upset by the use of bold, or is it that you don't like people having urgent post?

Regarding Royal Mail, a strike doesn't mean that the company does absolutely no work on that day. They have big customers that they don't want to let down because of industrial action, and they aim to process and deliver those customers' mail. Probably this doesn't help the OP (something makes me think you've not ordered a pair of Adidas trainers...), but I just wanted to say this for those of you who are so certain that you know what a Royal Mail strike looks like.

Ironically my Adidas trainers were "delayed" and arrived the next day after I ordered them despite saying they'd take 2-5 days. I was impressed.

Perhaps it's the bold words saying how critical it is, then saying the appointment can be changed?

Perhaps we know how a Royal Mail stroke looks because we've got close family members involved?

The offices are full of letters, packets, tracked items, they're going nowhere and with another 2 strike days this week, won't be going anywhere, anytime soon.

What information do you have to know what's happening?

I work at a mail centre – and worked on Thursday and Friday – so I have some sense of what's happening.

You're the person who said "They're on strike on Wednesday, do you know what a strike is?", but, as I said, the industrial action doesn't mean absolutely no work gets done. Not all Royal Mail workers are on strike, and at this time of year there are Christmas workers. Both of these things mean at least some work is being done. I just didn't like how certain you made yourself seem when you chose the sarcastic "do you know what a strike is?" as a response.

Are you a bridezilla by any chance? 🤣🤣

Bit rude. What if it is her wedding dress?

fairydustt · 29/11/2022 08:54

@wildpeaches because the post isn't about the company, it's asking advice about Royal Mail... 'Company x messed up, will it be worth going to Royal Mail to see if I can get my order' - where is the slagging off?

But anyway to answer OPs question, unfortunately no, they won't be able to give you to parcel if you went straight to Royal Mail

chikp · 29/11/2022 08:54

RoyalMaill · 29/11/2022 02:59

Gotta love the typical mn vipers 😂

The order was placed Monday 21/11/2022 for delivery Tuesday 22/11/2022 - I paid £11 for specified next day delivery. The appointment is on 30/11/2022 so it should have arrived over a week in advance. How far back should I have ordered, baring in mind it involved a colour match?

The company didn’t ship the item out until today, 29/11/2022. This is outside their promised timeframes for next day delivery, not what was advertised before purchase, nor what was listed on the order confirmation email. Hence why a delivery refund could be appropriate.

This is a major retailer, presumably they cpuld upscale resourcing for Black Friday demand as it comes around every year? The items I ordered were full price and before Black Friday launched.

Ultimately I don’t know to what extent you can blame strikes the item hasn’t been in RM’s possession until today. Beyond that, they’re not the only courier that exists, the retailer could have chosen to use a different service.

Have you asked the company for a refund that sounds really poor

Conkersareback · 29/11/2022 08:55

@uhOhOP DB is in a delivery office, just two people strike breaking, they are inundated with work, couldn't have the weekly meeting, couldn't find space in the office.

I do know what a strike looks like, most workers will not break the strike, the chances of them picking out OPs package is next to zero.

Luckily, most union members are standing United.

They should stop you trying to 'unalive' yourself. Or go straight to the team again. Either way, it isn't okay that you're derailing OP's perfectly reasonable request for advice.

chikp · 29/11/2022 08:57

Hesma · 29/11/2022 07:09

Maybe you should have got your arse in gear and ordered it sooner. It’s not like we didn’t know about Black Friday and postal strikes ffs. No reason to be furious with others when in comes down to your incompetence and lack of planning.

Bit rude OP chose to pay for next day delivery it shouldn't take nearly a week to be dispatched if it takes that long the service shouldn't be offered and charged for by the retailer.

Yea no one is slagging off royal mail here. They are legends

ginslinger · 29/11/2022 08:58

I can't see how anyone thinks this is slagging off Royal Mail - the OP states she's fuming with the company and asking for advice.

Yes OP hasn't said anything bad about Royal Mail

Zingy123 · 29/11/2022 08:59

@moose62 Are you aware the Post Office and Royal Mail are two totally separate companies?

I am always surprised by people who dont know this.

RoseDog · 29/11/2022 09:02

I'm understand your frustration OP, although my issue is with RM 😡🤬 but I think you would need to go today t your sorting office and beg and plead as RM are on strike tomorrow.

Meklk · 29/11/2022 09:04

I'm fed up with these strikes. Ordered some medicine two weeks ago, paid £14 for delivery and still didn't turn up. Sometimes there are no choices, some companies working only with RM for their deliveries.
Don't waste your time, I did the same, local Post office couldn't even say where is my parcel at the moment.
I'm pretty sure we'll have more stupid strikes just before Easter holidays. And the same shit on summer holidays.

ErinAndTonic · 29/11/2022 09:08

What have you ordered?

Getting it in person is probably your only chance but may involve a journey on your behalf I guess if it's specialist?

I'm guessing it's not the kind of thing you can order on Prime Now or click & collect? Colour match is just making me think foundation.. in which case, John Lewis! Although, not sure why that would be considered critical...

ABBAsnumberonefan · 29/11/2022 09:11

It was dispatched within 4-5 working days, depending on the time the OP ordered it. It probably stated next working day from dispatch date on the website hidden within t&cs.

if it doesn’t, then I would complain to the company. If it does, they’ll just repeat the t&cs to you.

If the parcel only got posted by the retailer today or yesterday, it won't be at her local sorting office until Friday at the earliest now, more likely next week.

Stupid strikes?

Strikes are supposed to cause disruption, otherwise their is no point in the workers losing so much money.

Soon every single sector will be on strike. It's a nonsense. I am constantly late to work because of rail strike, I can't get my medicines on time because Mail strike, my appointment with nurse is cancelled and I have no idea when I'll get it because Nurses strike.
Fuck it. Yes strikes are for idiots.

Zingy123 · 29/11/2022 09:25

@Meklk Another one who doesn't know the difference between the Post Office and Royal Mail.

People don't want to strike. They do it as their jobs are being threatened. I work for RM and am due to lose 33% of my pay for doing the same job I do now.

Terribly sorry you are being inconvenienced but as long as you are alright Jack.

bigdecisionstomake · 29/11/2022 09:29

Wow, I think you're getting an unreasonably hard time here OP. You ordered your item in plenty of time, you paid extra for next day delivery. You did everything right to ensure you had the item well within the timescale needed, even allowing for strikes and Black Friday. Contrary to accusations from PPs I don't see you using this as a 'Royal Mail bashing' thread - you simply asked for advice on how to retrieve your item.

I would complain to the company and ask for an immediate refund of the next day delivery charge - clearly they are in breach of their terms as they despatched the item far too late for that to be a possibility.

Then I would try to see if you could source the item anywhere locally. If not, then I would call my local sorting office/post office for advice as soon as you are able and see what they suggest. Some are far more flexible than others about collecting in person in my experience.
