To think Royal Mail workers should not be striking

Hitthehighseastoday · 27/11/2022 00:55

They’ve already been offered a 9% pay raise and declined. Royal Mail is already making a loss. It’s a national service for the public which is now being severely disrupted by strikes, it’s appalling.

I don't even know why Parliament are involved. It's a private company.

The company is on a downward spiral. A lot of their practices are 40 or 50 years out of date and are only done because the staff refuse to accept modernisation that will automate processes and make them surplus to requirements. They're modern day luddites. The other companies will automate everything that can be automated, and take RM's business through being cheaper, quicker and more efficient and RM workers will blame everyone but themselves.

You really don't have a clue, do you?

Luckily it doesn't matter why you don't know why they got involved.....

But they shown up ST as the disingenuous liar that he is.

Actually laddies are a very misunderstood movement. They weren't against the existence of the equipment, only the pattern of ownership ad the terrible conditions of the workers.

Neededanewuserhandle · 28/01/2023 21:09

Indeed, the Luddites were highly skilled workers who had served a long apprenticeship. Pretty much overnight they were deprived of a living at a time when there was no welfare state - they faced actual starvation. History is written by the victors isn't it?

Funny how "modernisation" always seems to involve ordinarly workers having to do more for less, or getting fired, whilst Sir Bufton Tufton always gets a fat bonus.

Florenz · 28/01/2023 23:23

There's nothing from stopping any of the workers from setting up their own delivery company and competing with RM, if they think they are so "skilled".

Menomadness · 29/01/2023 00:44

Royal Mail is of course now a private company. I remember it being sold for less than was imagined and lots of people were happy buying into that. We live in a capitalist country- hey ho.
The difficulty is if your work for RM and have done for a lot of years your working conditions are likely to be massively eroded.
Hand on heart if your boss said to you your contract is changing massively for example the changes of hours , would you just say yes ok?
How does that pan out in reality?
This is terrifying for people living in this position and trying to work out which of us can work and what hours.
I am absolutely 100% behind every single person is this country right now who are striking- the list grows longer- nurses, posties, ambulance staff , teachers, train staff , civii servants oops I forgot amazing on worked and possible firefighters .
. They cannot all be wrong ?
We need better pay/ and our conditions we signed up for should be withheld.

Florenz · 29/01/2023 04:18

Most people don't expect to work in the same job or for the same company for their whole lives. Or for things to the stay the same for their whole working lives. The world changes all the time and companies have to be prepared to change with it, because if they won't, other companies will.

dogdaydown · 29/01/2023 06:01

@Florenz what do you think about the CEO who lied in parliament?

You've not answered that?

You've just said "I don know why he was was questioned in parliament?

Do you advocate lying? Do you think he lied because the truth was embarrassing? Do you think he lied to protect the practices he was embarrassed to admit, when he did the whole I don't know what a PVA is, when he knew that the MP meant PDA, did that not show you how disingenuous he was? The things he was denying are happening in every single sorting office across the country, is he thinks the practices are right and correct why didn't he say so? He made a complete and utter fool of himself and in doing so has given the Union and the workers mare strength ✊. If he wasn't such an odious toad, I would thank him.

Can't wait for round 2 with the chairman.

Are you not shocked at the interview and the very unusual request to return to parliament?

Thats fine, work has changed but has it changed for the better? Despite all these changes to make industry more competitive, we are way behind countries like France and Germany with far more employee rights and representations.

RM board has handed out huge amounts of money to themselves, their owners and share holders & other companies are not going to be queuing up to sign into "Universal Delivery"

People buy into the Govt narrative without really thinking about the pros and cons and why they are pushing it because they ain't doing it for UK Plc.

Why use mn if a different opinion just means personal attack. There must be groups where everyone thinks the same out there.

wildpeaches · 29/01/2023 09:21

@MarshaBradyo why do you think you can police what and who posts on MN? Have you bothered to read the thread? Have you read every interaction from this poster with others here? A difference of opinion is fine. Repeatedly misrepresenting what other have said, repeatedly ignoring what others are explaining about the situation at RM and continually making stupid sweeping incorrect statements isn't.

Why call someone a moron I don’t get it. As for policing isn’t that what you are aiming for - the pp to stop posting. You must know others don’t feel exactly as you do and you’ll see that using a public forum.

It’s not a great word anyway.

dogdaydown · 29/01/2023 10:02

@MarshaBradyo why call someone a moron...why do you think?

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2023 10:05

Anyway I’m out. People post threads on mn being too aggressive with personal attacks and it puts them off contributing.

I prefer a range of opinions without one side thinking they can harass people to stop posting.

It’d be boring to be only with views from the left.

Anyway you all think it’s fine so crack on.

dogdaydown · 29/01/2023 10:13

@MarshaBradyo the PP was aimed at me, saying I'm wasting my time, it wasn't an order, just a friendly bit of advice.

Easily done 😬

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2023 11:10

Oh I presumed you had an issue with moderating yourself, having made a post completely of your own decision announcing you were off.

Not sure what your issue is being offered help?

You do more u turns than the RM CEO!

Florenz · 29/01/2023 11:20

Universal delivery should be scrapped, there is absolutely no need for it in 2023.

The government should not be getting involved in this.

Let the public decide. The company that operates the most efficient and well run delivery service will win out. That is definitely not Royal Mail with it's bolshy employees who think the company should be run for their benefit, not the customers and not the owners. They will be the first ones to go, they won't be able to compete with the streamlined, modern delivery companies.
