To think this isn’t working class?

Came across a video of someone talking about an influencer (very rich, lavish lifestyle, acts like old money, has a Birkin) and they said her content was aimed at working class.

I stated that it definitely isn’t.

Their response - As in those who work in higher incomes- working Class is a very broad spectrum now as I’m sure you’re aware 🥰

Am I wrong?

The influencer was Lydia Millen

Haha, knew it would be her! She’s such a piece of work, I can’t even hate watch her anymore.

YANBU!

You’re confused, it’s not about how “classy” they are. She is elite clas, they own and run a very successful business, and are multi millionaires. Working class is paid by the hour getting a wage.

No love, you're confused.

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 27/11/2022 10:18

It’s just a way of keeping somebody in their place backhanded snub

I think this is really rude. You speak as though being working is something people should be ashamed of, or it's embarrassing.

I am a proud, working class woman and would never take offence to someone calling me working class.

I do not aspire to have riches and birkin bags because that a fucking stupid waste of money and shallow as fuck.

But we have a nice house in a nice area in my working class town.

We make a decent living and enjoy some luxuries.

I am not ashamed of my roots and never would be, but then I also don't put stock into what 'influencers' say or do, because although I'm working class, I'm not as thick as two short planks, believe it or not.

JayJayYoYo · 27/11/2022 10:21

Bless you thinking that someone who uses social media and owns a Birkin isn’t working class.

MichaelAndEagle · 27/11/2022 10:25

The point about moving class is interesting. I was single mum, renting, living month to month, on uc......
Still middle class because I was born middle class.
It would have been disingenuous of me to claim to be working class, I still had all the benefits of my MC upbringing, education etc. Made it a lot easier for me to get out of that situation.
I think it takes a generation to change class really. If I had stayed in those circumstances maybe my children's children would have been working class?

Buckland123 · 27/11/2022 10:36

I don’t understand why some people on here still think money = upper/elite class. Wayne Rooney bring prime example - loads of money but he isn’t, and will never be, anything other than working class. And there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s who he is. Same with Mrs Hinch.

lottery win doesn’t suddenly mean you’re upper class, just means you have a bigger bank balance. Your values, childhood, cultural background etc are what defines class, nothing to do with money.

I don’t understand how some people have no understanding of rhe uk class system, or social mobility. Rooney is not working class. Working class is earning a wage, unskilled labour. Rooney is not this. It doesn’t matter what his mum and dad are, it’s about him now. Rooney is as far from working class as it gets.

True. Class has to start some where so Rooneys kids will definitely be MC though.

So is Wayne Rooney a member of the aristocracy now? 😆

You have no understanding of the U.K. class system. Your knowledge seems to have been gleaned from a BBC survey a few years back or some sort of academic social sciences definition as ‘elite’ is not a class as most people would define it. Social class in England particularly is far more nuanced than you seem to realise.

bravelittletiger · 27/11/2022 11:01

@Joyfuljolly I don't understand why you're on this thread trying to school people on the class system in the UK when you haven't got the faintest understanding of what it is or how it works. "Elite" isn't a class. The old fashioned class system isn't based purely on money.

TabithaTittlemouse · 27/11/2022 11:25

She’s just a Tory wannabe. That shouldn’t be something to aspire to.

cherish123 · 27/11/2022 11:39

I've never heard of any of the people on this thread (except Wayne Rooney). It must be my age!

No YOU don’t have an understanding. It’s to do with family background. The aristocracy is the “upper class”, a lot of people from the aristocracy aren’t rich.

I presume that your post was aimed at @Joyfuljolly rather than at me

Cherryana · 27/11/2022 12:14

@Joyfuljolly I understand what you are alluding too, regarding that some people transcend the limitations of their class to become wealthy and give exponentially better opportunities to their children than they got.

But, what you are saying, is really not true about a superclass called the elite, that leapfrogs over all the others, into a category of its own.

Class (I feel sick going on about it) doesn’t really change easily… it’s not just about money and if you are paid by the hours, it’s about upbringing and cultural differences and knowing certain rules and terminology, it’s about connections and it’s revealed in a hundred ways such as whether you eat tea, dinner or supper or call your mum - mum or mummy.

Even if your house has a drawing room and you had to pick your children up from exeat during the Michaelmas term, your class will be obvious to those who can be bothered to assess it.

Wayne Rooney is working class. He is rich, but he is still working class. His kids will be middle class.

Money doesn't just change what class you are. If I won the Euromillions this weekend then I'd still be working class because that is my background. My ideologies, values, hobbies, education, are all working class.

You admit you don’t watch the show yet know their social backgrounds? One of them is the heir to McVitties fortune, another is a Quality Street heiress. Not everyone with rich parent will just give them money. If I was rich I wouldn’t give my adult child pocket money.

Also why is it a good thing to be “old money”? That just means you’re useless and only have wealth because Great Grandaddy did well? How is that something to be proud of?

Especially as many of these upper-class, aristocratic families were embedded in the slave trade. The government of Barbados is suing the Drax family because they effectively started the slave trade on the island.

So what class is Meghan Markle, then?

Or Kate, the Princess of Wales, for that matter?
