To think this isn’t working class?

Came across a video of someone talking about an influencer (very rich, lavish lifestyle, acts like old money, has a Birkin) and they said her content was aimed at working class.

I stated that it definitely isn’t.

Their response - As in those who work in higher incomes- working Class is a very broad spectrum now as I’m sure you’re aware 🥰

Am I wrong?

I think you're confused about class and money OP. I don't know this influencer, but flouting a lavish lifestyle and carrying birkins is about as far from old money as you can get.

SynchOrSwim · 26/11/2022 18:11

1.2m followers and I've never heard of her!

Angrymum22 · 26/11/2022 18:16

I doubt she’s ever walked a dog in the countryside in her life. The last thing you would wear to walk the labs is a designer jumper. And as for the cream leather in the 4x4 it just wouldn’t last a minute with rugby playing sons.
But and suppose if you have that much money you have someone to clean the car for you. New money rarely become old money because they spend it.

Jammy62 · 26/11/2022 18:24

This really confuses me too. I used to watch Lydia Millen youtube every now and then quite a few years ago and she was a normal girl, maybe slightly chavy, she liked designer brands and had a bit of a more common accent than she does now. She seemed to aspire to have more than she had and to better herself. Now she lives in a huge house and seems to love talking about gardening. She wears really expensive clothes worth thousands and is always staying at the savoy etc. A few months ago i saw she bought a hundred odd grand range rover. She and her husband seem to get a lot of sponsorship from v high end brands but i dont understand why. The people who used to be her target audience can no longer afford her lifestyle and i cant understand why those who do have that budget would see her as influencial. Its a bit like the girl Victoria Magrath who she used to be friends with. I saw at one point she was being sponsored by Bentley cars. I just dont get why someone with the budget for a bentley would be influenced by a working class girl who is earning £££ on instagram. I say this with no disrespect intended, i just dont understand it. Molly Mae on the other hand, she promotes PLT which is quite cheap and the stuff she posts about is general affordable or attainable to who id see as her market so i see the relation.

Glumbums · 26/11/2022 18:28

I love her clothing choices and I would dress like that if I could. But herself, she seems graceless and doing conspicuous consumption. That's not very upper class.

StoneofDestiny · 26/11/2022 18:33

Can't believe people still shuffle themselves into a class system in 2022! No wonder we still have a 'royal family' and people bow to them.

Bentley is a bit of a 'footballer's wives' sort of brand these days.

The influencer was Lydia Millen

Instantly knew it was her you were talking about in your OP.

I think she is cos-playing 'old money'. It's very clear she isn't from that kind of background.

BadNomad · 26/11/2022 22:03

aimed at working class

They're not saying her content is working class. She's an influencer. Someone people are supposed to look up to for inspiration. Something to aim for. Upper Middle/UC won't be interested in that.

Livinginanotherworld · 26/11/2022 22:13

She is definitely not old money, both her and her husband get practically everything for free from sponsors, both of their YouTube channels make a shitload of money too. They don’t actually own their cars, they are ‘loaned’ and sponsored by the brands to advertise them.

EthicalNonMahogany · 26/11/2022 22:30

The whole idea of an influencer at all is totally not middle class - I don't think you get middle class influencers? Because the whole premise is to show you what fancy new stuff to buy to demonstrate something about yourself...

BetterDrownedThanDuffer · 26/11/2022 22:31

Lydia Millen is an absolute prat.

Imagine someone who never apologises, ever, for lying, acting badly and treating people badly, but instead always makes the storyline about her. Poor Me. Look at Me. Fake from her tits to her toes.

Her desperate PR team are now trying to get views/followers wherever they can following her most recent blunder.

I hope she gets cancelled.

There are more middle class influencers than working class for sure.

No “old money” ones that I can think of, though.

iknowwheretheothersockgoes · 26/11/2022 23:17

Are any of the Made in Chelsea people actually old money? I can't recall their backgrounds

AllAoutMe · 26/11/2022 23:17

stuntbubbles · 26/11/2022 16:51

Is she the one who did the “my hot water is broken I’m off to the Savoy” ad? Yeah there’s nothing “old money” about her. Does anyone old money do social media influencing?

Not the goring?

new money then

AllAoutMe · 26/11/2022 23:19

Beezknees · 26/11/2022 17:00

I'm working class and I've stayed at the Shard.

Their whole marketing is aspirational

no-one with money needs to stay anywhere in London other than their own residence

Cherryana · 26/11/2022 23:27

I knew who you were talking about. I always assumed she aimed her content at Americans who might believe that English countryside weird poetry talking thing she does, and think she is the real deal…surely no one else does.

She is new money. Nothing wrong with that, - she has a nicer house than me, nicer clothes than me and a hot husband.

Defo aimed at aspiration and incredibly twee and annoying.

LynLynette · 26/11/2022 23:39

The original definition of “working class” referred to people with low skills and little education who had to do paid labour in order to survive, usually manual or industrial workers. It is what Marx called the Proletariat. It came from a very different time before social welfare/ benefits.
IMO, it’s not a relevant term anymore. I think people use it for want of a better way to describe people on low incomes but it doesn’t really apply to modern society.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/11/2022 23:50

Hills2022 · 26/11/2022 16:56

i knew you would be talking about her. She is not remotely old money and yes she is wholly aimed at the aspirational working class and lower middle class. Rich but naff

I’d never heard of her, but having looked her up I would concur.

She’s creating a lifestyle to aspire to. Her followers can’t afford the savoy but they can buy the candle (or whatever) that she’s being paid to flog

Blueeyedgirl21 · 26/11/2022 23:56

Lydia Millen is vile

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 27/11/2022 00:08

I’ve just looked her up. She’s advertising this that and the other from some snobby shop. It’s not exactly TU at Sainsbos is it?! Definitely not aimed at the working classes.
My history is wc, yes, I’ve stayed in posh hotels, travelled the world (through work and luck), but I wouldn’t spend my money on that shit.

Not sure who Lydia is or what she's famous for, OP. Googled her and definitely WC.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 27/11/2022 00:25

The British obsession with class is both bizarre and also very, very dull. Does it really matter what so-called class someone is? Surely other qualities in a person should be more important, like intelligence, or empathy for example? Why does it matter if someone's jumper would suit a muddy landrover or not, or whether their handbag is a bit flash? Why the idea that muddy-booted and tatty-coated aristos are in some way superior to people who like a bit of bling? I mean why do people care so much, it doesn't matter!

Sorry for the vent, but it makes me glad I left the UK for somewhere a little less class-bound.
