Impatient people at the petrol station

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:33

went To the petrol station this morning to fill up my car on my way to work.

I paid at the pump, put the fuel in my car and got back into my car again to drive off.

There was a woman in her car using the pumps behind me and she had finished filling her car and so was waiting for me to leave the forecourt to facilitate her exit as there was no room for her to get through until left as there were pumps on the other side which were being used.

I had got into my car, used some hand sanitiser and then switched on my engine to get ready to go.

As soon as I got into the car, she had driven her car from her pump right up to the tail end of my car as if to say hurry up in a really passive aggressive way - for context, I drove off within a minute of getting back into my car.

AIBU to think these people should just chill out and have some patience? It’s not like I was sitting there dithering for 5 minutes!

If you want to sanitise your hands why not do it while walking back to your car, just carry a small pump dispenser on your walk across the forecourt.

I thought she paid at pump

I used pay at the pump so I didn’t need to go into the shop to pay.

People that faff about in front of me while getting ready to leave a petrol station really annoy me. They know they are blocking someone behind them but carry on. The worst one I had in front of me was a woman faffing around so much I ended up moving my car to another pump, filled it up my large tank and got back in ready to go and then she moved her car. This was about 10 minutes after she had initially sat in the car.

SoupDragon · 24/11/2022 17:30

That's just your interpretation though.

SoupDragon · 24/11/2022 17:30

She probably didn't give it any thought at all.

You would fail to see how it was your fault for accidentally putting your car into reverse and driving into someone?? It would be 100% your fault.

And “it took a matter of seconds whether it was 2 or 60”? What if it was 200 seconds? Or 10,000 seconds? Is it all quick as long as you measure it in seconds?

60 seconds is a long time to wait behind someone who you are stuck behind and you know could just move. I expect to drive off within about 10 seconds of getting back in the car.

Surely most people are over the hand sanitizer phase now?

I don’t think i would consider it a phase or in any way strange to clean your hands after touching a commonly touched surface/object. It really is just basic hygiene.

People seem very quick to take offence these days.

Not really offended, just thought it was stupid to sit right up my tail end when I intended to drive off anyway.

Oh no, dawdlers who take ages to move away from petrol stations after they are finished are the worst.

What are they doing in there? Move on!!

DrMarciaFieldstone · 24/11/2022 17:36

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:55

Well, I mean I could have accidentally put my car into reverse and I would fail to see how it would have been my fault as she was unnecessarily sitting too close to my car’s rear end?

I view it as passive aggressiveness. That’s just my viewpoint 🤷🏻‍♂️

Err, this would absolutely be your fault.

NadjaCravensworth · 24/11/2022 17:38

Why didn't you sanitise on your way back to the car?

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 17:38

DrMarciaFieldstone · 24/11/2022 17:36

Err, this would absolutely be your fault.

Well, even if it was still my fault, it doesn’t change the fact that we’d both probably have damaged cars as a result.

entirely a hypothetical situation, but whilst it would be an error on my part, her car wouldn’t have been hit if she wasn’t so close to mine

No I totally agree - that happened to me also with an elderly person not that long ago and it infuriated me.

But I didn’t even take a minute

So it’s ok for you to be ageist and impatient, but not for anyone else?
I suspect you’re more entitled than you realise

ComfortablyDazed · 24/11/2022 17:42

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:47

I would agree with the ‘faffing’ point if I had got into the car and started going through my hand back to find my lipstick!

But she doesn’t know that, does she…?

She can’t see into your car to what you’re doing - and she has zero sense of how long you’re going to be.

If someone gets into their car and doesn’t drive off immediately, people behind are left sitting there wondering WTF they’re doing, and exactly how long they’re going to be.

Sorry - but you will get people behind you urging you to move it along.

I won’t be one of them, I’ll just be seething at you silently and impotently. Others will make their feelings more obviously known. 🤷🏻‍♀️

You’d be the one out of pocket after the insurance claim though, not her.

Ariela · 24/11/2022 17:44

I agree, don't know why everyone was filling up today as the price is coming down. (improved exchange rate, mild weather, reducing Brent Crude price, good supply), I'm expecting that it'll peak low 2 weeks before Christmas.

The person I am talking about literally did take ages though, it must have been about 5 minutes. I wasn’t any longer than a minute so it’s not really comparable tbh.

Yeah, but given the people in the car behind you don’t have a crystal ball to foretell exactly how long you’re going to faff………..

Discoh · 24/11/2022 17:47

Absolutely guarantee that OP spends 20 minutes in a toilet cubicle pulling up her pants, half an hour at the cashpoint printing mini statements and 45 minutes packing her shopping in Lidl

A minute is still ridiculous, both are making people wait unnecessarily, both absolutely comparable

True, but I didn’t faff. Quickly applied my hand sanitiser, put my purse away and off I went, there was no sitting around day dreaming or making phone calls whilst holding up everyone behind me.

I hate garage faffers.
So many times I've got grumpy whilst waiting for the person in front to... adjust their mirror (why? It should already have been adjusted!) hand out snacks and treats to other passengers, sort out the sat nav , check their feckin' phones.

I feel sure these people think their only taking a few seconds.

Don't get me started on those petrol stations that have a mini supermarket attached... you could be sitting there for half an hour!

donttellmehesalive · 24/11/2022 17:51

I think you probably took a little bit longer than you realised.

Or maybe you didn't and she was just very keen to get going.

She didn't swear, shout, beep or gesture so really it is the tiniest of transgressions and not worth thinking about within seconds of the event.

FridayNightIsWineNight · 24/11/2022 17:52

Manchmal · 24/11/2022 17:03

There is a level of hell reserved for people who fart around at the pump after getting back in the car.

along with people who stop at the top of escalators.

Absolutely this!!
And it takes far longer than 2 seconds for that horrible gunky spunky hand sanitiser to rub in enough to grip the streaming wheel! 😂

milawops · 24/11/2022 17:52

So if I had been walking across the back of your car and you'd accidentally put it in reverse and hit me that would be my fault? Not your fault for not being able to get your car in the right gear?
