Impatient people at the petrol station

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:33

went To the petrol station this morning to fill up my car on my way to work.

I paid at the pump, put the fuel in my car and got back into my car again to drive off.

There was a woman in her car using the pumps behind me and she had finished filling her car and so was waiting for me to leave the forecourt to facilitate her exit as there was no room for her to get through until left as there were pumps on the other side which were being used.

I had got into my car, used some hand sanitiser and then switched on my engine to get ready to go.

As soon as I got into the car, she had driven her car from her pump right up to the tail end of my car as if to say hurry up in a really passive aggressive way - for context, I drove off within a minute of getting back into my car.

AIBU to think these people should just chill out and have some patience? It’s not like I was sitting there dithering for 5 minutes!

Hate impatient people in petrol stations. My Mum has MS so it takes her longer than an healthy/younger person to get into the car and seat belt on. The number of times she gets the passive aggressive treatment is ludicrous.

SavingKitten · 24/11/2022 16:49

If you weren’t faffing and only took 2 seconds I doubt they managed to drive right up and demonstrate they were being passive aggressive, unless they then sat revving which according to you they wouldn’t have had time to do, how is it aggressive? Sounds like you faffed and then took offence at nothing. Move on!

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:51

There was no need for her to drive up my tail end. That’s basically the same as tailgating on the road.

She could have switched on her engine and stayed where she was and then drove off at the same time as me, like I said, it really didn’t take me long

Well, it's not, is it? Unless this is another post with a massive dripfeed attached. Tailgating on a road, you risk hitting someone because you don't have stopping distance. Easing forward from a complete standstill towards a parked car is exactly the same thing we all do when we park.

Turquoisa80 · 24/11/2022 16:54

Yanbu people are really impatient and wierd. I pulled in at the petrol station and was behind a car who was filling up so I started filling my car behind. That person drove off and 8 had just finished, went to the kiosk paid.. Walked back, put seat belt on and another car (wide ride suv) pulled in front of me and started filling up and as he'd parked awkwardly I couldn't pull out around him.. I was fuming. People are so rude

Well, I mean I could have accidentally put my car into reverse and I would fail to see how it would have been my fault as she was unnecessarily sitting too close to my car’s rear end?

I view it as passive aggressiveness. That’s just my viewpoint 🤷🏻‍♂️

I wasn’t ‘faffing’ and no I’m not backtracking.

all I’m saying is it took a matter of seconds whether it was 2 or 60

There's a huge difference between waiting 2 seconds longer than expected and waiting 60 seconds longer. 60 seconds is a huge amount of time. Imagine if the car in front at a red light waited 60 seconds after the lights turned green, the lights might change, possibly more than once, while the person behind is waiting for them to go.

When I get into a car at the petrol station, I pull out of the space as fast as possible, I know that every second I wait is costing someone else.

Ok, I think you are taking the piss now.

Unrelated but if you reverse into someone's car because you put the car in the wrong gear, it's your fault, regardless of where they're parked.

It might have been passive aggressive but they might have felt it was rude of you to hold them up.

I think the best think you can do is let it go and move on rather than letting it bother you this much.

woodhill · 24/11/2022 16:58

It can be irritating

I've witnessed people masking a phone call whilst blocking a pump which is not on imo

Ok, I think you are taking the piss now.

not really. Just saying there was no need to sit so close to my car.

If you read one of my PPs, I said I had experience similar with an elderly man who was taking ages which annoyed the hell out of me but I didn’t drive up to his tail end.

Absolutely and I’d never think about making a phone call in the forecourt!

slightly infuriating sitting behind someone who takes ages to leave the pump

I was behind a guy in a Merc (not correlating car type with what happened). He drove to the wrong side. Refused to move. A lady eventually came out and filled his car for him (she had to do something to make the tube thing longer). This took ages. He obviously wanted a full tank. Then. He waltzed into the kiosk thing and took AGES. There were only 50% of the pumps working anyway so loads of people waiting. Then. He gets back in car and doesn't set off. I was nearly banging my head on the steering wheel. Jeez.

OhmygodDont · 24/11/2022 17:00

Just get in buckle up Starr car and go. There really isn’t anything else that you have to do.

this is a bit like men taking long poos. Just get in get done and go it’s a chore not a break.

RollerGirl7 · 24/11/2022 17:00

She clearly arrived after you but managed to pull up, put petrol in, pay for it, get back in the car and drive forwards.

So either you will put an in miles more petrol than she was or you are slow.

I bet from the way this thread is gone you're gonna claim that she must have spent a lot less time than you actually filling up

Getoff · 24/11/2022 17:01

You took longer than expected, she pulled forward because she expected to move into a space you were vacating. Anything more than zero seconds putting hand sanitiser on is going to surprise the person behind you, because there expectation for when you will be gone is based on the 90%+ of drivers who put their seatbelt on and get their key into the ignition and pull out as soon as they can.

bloodywhitecat · 24/11/2022 17:01

I think you're in a minority OP.

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 17:02

Well clearly I am being AIBU… even though I still think she was very impatient, the point has been taken and from now on I’ll not sanitise my hands whilst still parked in the forecourt!

Manchmal · 24/11/2022 17:03

There is a level of hell reserved for people who fart around at the pump after getting back in the car.

along with people who stop at the top of escalators.

PurplePixies · 24/11/2022 17:04

YANBU

Yes, I've noticed that Brits are notoriously impatient when in a Car, or a queue of any sort. They need to chill out more. 😎

My petrol tank was on empty so I had quite a bit to put in, and yes, she was finished before me despite arriving after me.

I find this occasionally, I use hand sanitizer every time at the pumps - to those saying it's not necessary- consider all those grubby hands and germs that have touched it before, then your now grubby germy hands all over your steering wheel 🤢 people just need to learn a bit of patience

I was behind an old guy (definitely over 70) at the petrol pump one day & it took him a solid 5mins to get from walking out the kiosk door to actually driving off - never mind being annoyed that he took so long, surely if he's that slow getting into his car & being ready to move off his reflexes can't be quick enough to be safe on the roads.

But I must admit I'm guilty of resetting my mileage counter & plugging my phone back in before driving off after filling up.

Ageism is apparently just fine on MN.
