Impatient people at the petrol station

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:33

went To the petrol station this morning to fill up my car on my way to work.

I paid at the pump, put the fuel in my car and got back into my car again to drive off.

There was a woman in her car using the pumps behind me and she had finished filling her car and so was waiting for me to leave the forecourt to facilitate her exit as there was no room for her to get through until left as there were pumps on the other side which were being used.

I had got into my car, used some hand sanitiser and then switched on my engine to get ready to go.

As soon as I got into the car, she had driven her car from her pump right up to the tail end of my car as if to say hurry up in a really passive aggressive way - for context, I drove off within a minute of getting back into my car.

AIBU to think these people should just chill out and have some patience? It’s not like I was sitting there dithering for 5 minutes!

She clearly arrived after you but managed to pull up, put petrol in, pay for it, get back in the car and drive forwards.

So either you will put an in miles more petrol than she was or you are slow.

I bet from the way this thread is gone you're gonna claim that she must have spent a lot less time than you actually filling up

That or op is one of those impatient nuggets who squished in front making the space too small because her or the person the other side had a wide car for the other lady to leave rather than waiting for her to walk back to her car after paying. I’ve seen a few do it when you can see the person walking back to their car.

Setyoufree · 24/11/2022 17:10

Mostly I'm intrigued by the hand sanitiser. Why are you doing that? It's not going to get petrol/diesel off your hands, or any grime from pumps being outside?

Anyway that wasn't the point. If you truly were able to do it in 2 secs, she wouldn't have had time to pull up behind you so it sounds like there must have been some faffing involved. Not sure it's particularly aggressive of her to pull forward though

ScroogeMcDuckling · 24/11/2022 17:10

i think we all faff a little bit to long sometimes.

you fill up,
you get back in your car,
do the hands - petrol pumps can be rotten
change the cd especially if your now on your own….
press the milometer to check you’re still hitting 450-500 a tank or whatever your tank does
possibly chewing gum
seatbelt
a quick scratch
and you’re ready to go 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Germs from other people touching the pumps, that’s one’s obvious surely!

It wasn’t about fuel being on my hands - it’s about killing off any germs that may have been on my hands after touching the petrol pump handle

Lol 'germs'. Nope, I just wash my hands before I eat, don't pick my nose, has kept me alive so far. Worked for everyone else before hand sanitiser existed too. Absolutely disgusting stuff.

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 17:13

Even though I didn’t take long at all and I have taken onboard what people have said on here so I won’t sanitise again whilst at the forecourt, I still need a few seconds to get in and put my purse back in my pocket, put my seatbelt on and start the engine - she probably wouldn’t have been happy with that either!

A minute is a long time to wait behind someone at the pumps. You faffed, she got irritated. Just let it go.

Well, I’d rather be on the safe side! I have a tendency to rub my eyes without thinking and it would be a shame to transfer nasty germs like that.

Im not suggesting you should use it, but that’s obviously why OP was using it… and no, it didn’t work for everyone else did it. Plenty have vulnerable people over thousands of years have caught bugs from dirty surfaces and become ill, and yes some have died as a result.

HeraldicBlazoning · 24/11/2022 17:16

Let's not tell OP about all the billions of bacteria she has living in and on her body. She'll spontaneously combust in a haze of sanitzer.

Lol 😂 bit OTT. How am I to know someone hasn’t just been to the toilet for a poo and then gone and touched the pump handle and then I touch it next and get all those germs?

I have noticed this as well. It’s probably to do with the horrendous traffic in this country. Drivers are so stressed and tired, so sick of queues and tailbacks, and so worried about being late, that they take it out on other drivers.

OhmygodDont · 24/11/2022 17:19

I mean I get it in a way but wear gloves. You’d be disgusted as I was by a women on TikTok last night Envy not envy

ChilomenaPunk · 24/11/2022 17:20

YANBU, OP.

People are too impatient generally.

  • Someone once had a massive go at me - properly red faced shouting - for not pulling forward to the front pump. Until she realised there wasn't a front pump, only that one.
  • Tailgating when I stick to the speed limit, or even going slightly over.
  • Pushing their trolley into you in the supermarket queue.
  • Tutting if your ticket/phone takes a second too long to open the barrier at railway stations

Single use, non-recyclable plastic gloves?

Could try washable gloves. How many times a week you filling up.

It takes me ages to put the nozzle back, close the petrol cap, get back into the car, get my seat belt on and set off, because I am an arthritic old codger, so you will all have to bloody wait, and be thankful that I avoid the busiest times, if possible!

ChilomenaPunk · 24/11/2022 17:24

All power to your elbow @queenMab99.

Fladdermus · 24/11/2022 17:24

You should have got back out of your car and gone and had a browse round the shop.

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:55

Well, I mean I could have accidentally put my car into reverse and I would fail to see how it would have been my fault as she was unnecessarily sitting too close to my car’s rear end?

I view it as passive aggressiveness. That’s just my viewpoint 🤷🏻‍♂️

You would fail to see how it was your fault for accidentally putting your car into reverse and driving into someone?? It would be 100% your fault.

And “it took a matter of seconds whether it was 2 or 60”? What if it was 200 seconds? Or 10,000 seconds? Is it all quick as long as you measure it in seconds?

60 seconds is a long time to wait behind someone who you are stuck behind and you know could just move. I expect to drive off within about 10 seconds of getting back in the car.

Surely most people are over the hand sanitizer phase now?

Cancelledtwiceover · 24/11/2022 17:25

She was just waiting to go. She'd already waited for you to refill and then you took a bit longer to get going.
If she'd said something you may have a point, but all she was doing was driving up to you to get going, you've put the inpatient spin on it.

bloodywhitecat · 24/11/2022 17:25

If you want to sanitise your hands why not do it while walking back to your car, just carry a small pump dispenser on your walk across the forecourt.
