Impatient people at the petrol station

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:33

went To the petrol station this morning to fill up my car on my way to work.

I paid at the pump, put the fuel in my car and got back into my car again to drive off.

There was a woman in her car using the pumps behind me and she had finished filling her car and so was waiting for me to leave the forecourt to facilitate her exit as there was no room for her to get through until left as there were pumps on the other side which were being used.

I had got into my car, used some hand sanitiser and then switched on my engine to get ready to go.

As soon as I got into the car, she had driven her car from her pump right up to the tail end of my car as if to say hurry up in a really passive aggressive way - for context, I drove off within a minute of getting back into my car.

AIBU to think these people should just chill out and have some patience? It’s not like I was sitting there dithering for 5 minutes!

@Devoutspoken I bet if they were off to work at a hospital they would have spoken to the OP, even some of the ruder consultants.

I'm always conscious if people waiting so quickly get in the car putting my seatbelt on as I drive away! Silly really.

I hate people in supermarkets who are right behind you in the queue waiting to pack their shopping before you've even paid, that really pisses me off!

Yes there are people like that

bringincrazyback · 26/11/2022 13:22

In this scenario I think YANBU and she was being too impatient. (And did those accusing the OP of faffing not read where she said the woman drove right up behind her the minute she got in the car? At that point the OP hadn't had chance to either faff or not faff!)

TBH the aggressive driving up behind would have made me feel more like taking my own time moving away, but I'm petty like that. 😄

It's not like you filled up and then spent ages browsing round the shop as a PP mentioned, as I've seen people do regardless that they were holding others up. (I hate the trend of mini-supermarkets inside petrol stations for this very reason!)

I also find it a bit weird suggesting people should be 'over' sanitising their hands regularly by now. Covid hasn't gone away.

If one minute is a big deal to the person in the car behind, then barring emergencies they should have set off earlier.

RedAppleGirl · 26/11/2022 13:45

A minute or 2 secs? I think you were faffing.

The other car just drove up though. It's not like they were honking and cursing. It may be slightly annoying but it's not like they were being aggressive.

It's like the other thread where the OP hands a tablet to their child and because another patron looked in her direction for a second in a way she deemed disapproving, they're evil and judgemental when they could have just been looking around. Mountains out of molehills.

I was behind an old guy (definitely over 70) at the petrol pump one day & it took him a solid 5mins to get from walking out the kiosk door to actually driving off - never mind being annoyed that he took so long, surely if he's that slow getting into his car & being ready to move off his reflexes can't be quick enough to be safe on the roads.

But I must admit I'm guilty of resetting my mileage counter & plugging my phone back in before driving off after filling up.

Then you're clearly a hypocrite, aren't you?

I get annoyed by people at department store tills who, once they have paid, spend absolutely ages faffing about putting their purse away and getting their bags organised without moving away from the till so the next person can be served.

My all time favourite was a couple at the check-out, she'd gone off for something they'd forgotten, he was packing. She returned with an armful to add to the belt, yelled at him because he hadn't packed 'properly', presumably as she liked it packed, proceeded to unpack it all and repack it. She then made comments to the clearly annoyed queue of people waiting!

Duchess379 · 26/11/2022 21:52

This is my pet hate. Sanitise your hands, put purse back in handbag, put handbag on the floor for safety, put seatbelt on.. blah blah blah. Just get in & go fgs 🙄

CattyStark · 26/11/2022 22:23

Driver should have rammed into the back of you OP to get you moving. Stop faffing!!!

JenniferWooley · 27/11/2022 08:24

@JudgeJ the guy wasn't faffing he was just a lot slower to move, if needed I can be in my car & moving off in a matter of seconds - in an emergency my reflexes are quick enough to avoid an accident his are unlikely to be that's not hypocritical it's an observation.

gogohmm · 27/11/2022 08:50

Hand sanitizer???

Ok that's obviously contributing to the queues here! Why not wash your hands when you get out of the car, better for your skin. A minute is a long time in this context, 10 seconds would be my expectation

gogohmm · 27/11/2022 08:53

Just one thing of note though, some people who need to claim for fuel do log the mileage, fuel quantity bought and price paid per litre each time, a faff!

I wasn’t sanitising for a minute, it was only a few seconds.

unfortunately I didn’t think to log the exact and precise amount of time I spent in the car after getting my fuel before I drove off, but it literally was only a matter of seconds - saying I was a minute is only a figure of speech and isn’t really meant to be taken literally.

I was hardly gonna say oh I was 20.2 seconds!

So, OP. You ask the question, AIBU? 70% say YES, 30% say NO on the survey. The majority of the comments say that either you were hanging around and/or they'd be annoyed if they were the person behind. But you still feel that you didn't do anything wrong. Why ask the question then?

Obviously aware they were taking too long, or why else interpret something negatively when the other driver may have just been getting ready to go.

Perps · 10/12/2022 23:42

If she’d bumped into the back of you the accident would have been your fault. You don’t prat around at a petrol pump.

Blendiful · 11/12/2022 02:16

People are often getting petrol on the move e.g whilst out at work or with somewhere to be.

I think people should be faster and not faff in their cars. This is why people get annoyed.

Makes me mad when I arrive at the pump and people take ages to undo their cap, put their card in, pin. Finally fill up, and then when done get back in the car and spend ages putting stuff away in their bag, and whatever else.

People act like they are surprised when they arrive at the pump of the tasks they need to do despite doing it often (more than likely) I have everything ready and then just dump my stuff back in the car and sort it when I pull over next.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 11/12/2022 02:18

You think that’s bad - I remember years ago on MN a poster described how her DH takes a little book out the glove box and writes down the mileage and fuel cost before he sets off. Now that I’d be raging at!

nalabae · 11/12/2022 04:48

move your car out the way because you don’t have anything better to do doesn’t mean anyone else doesn’t r

Georgeandzippyzoo · 11/12/2022 06:16

I feel under pressure if a car is behind me but at several of our our local petrol stations you can't 'move forward to let them pass' , moving forward means you have to leave the petrol station as there's nowhere to pull over to.
I've seen cars sound the horns at mums putting babies in cars. Waiting one minute may infuriate people but it's not gonna wreck your day , people just need some patience/awareness of others.

KendrickLamaze · 11/12/2022 07:01

I'll never understand people at petrol stations. She could have reversed and gone round. That's what I do. Also PSA - the pump reaches both sides. You don't have to wait for one on your side when other pumps are free.

HarlanPepper · 11/12/2022 07:33

The only thing that annoys me at petrol stations is people blocking the way by queueing for pumps that are on the same side as their fuel cap, despite the fact that hoses are long enough so you can fill up on either side of a pump. Baffles me, probably, rather than annoys me.

If the other driver had driven into a stationary car, it would have been the other driver's fault? Luckily insurance companies and driving laws disagree.

Imallshoppedout · 11/12/2022 11:38

I think this is a wind up. Much talk of hair and make up, lipstick and handbags, and use of a man emoji. I think someone is having a bit of fun.

I think that was hands down the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever read on MN. “Yes I know I purposefully rammed into a stationery car but I had an eyebrow wax appointment so it was important I did that!”

Police: “Completely understandable”
