David Badiel - Jews Don't Count. Shocked

Everanewbie · 22/11/2022 12:28

AIBU to be disappointed and upset at the blindspot for antisemitism that was highlighted in last night's excellent documentary? The Leigh Francis part was especially revealing to me. The (quite correct) groveling apologies for the Michael Jackson, Craig David and Mel B characters were a contrast to the defining silence on the David Badiel character.

What is more, the reaction from the left-wing commentators (Owen Jones, et al) on twitter seem to suggest that Badiel says other racism doesn't exist, which feels like a deliberate and willful misrepresentation.

The trick is not to ever engage in any post on MN about Judaism as you WILL be accused of making it up/victim hood/told it didn’t happen/accused of drinking baby blood/accused of throwing pipe bombs into Gaza from your misappropriated back garden.

I wish I could’ve met SW, but I’m not sure I’d have been able to thank him as I would’ve been rendered speechless.

@Grumpusaurus I did indeed misconstrue your question and see now that it was honest. I'm afraid that some of this thread has my hackles very far up and I should also have thought/asked before responding as I did. Please accept my sincere apology and yes, I was referring to the great Simon Wiesenthal.

She didn't question your spelling @CPL593H I wonder why if she wanted to check who you were referring to.

Lunar270 · 25/11/2022 08:16

I’m not a football fan but I believe this is called a ‘self-own’.

'Self-own' is most definitely what you mean but when related to football I believe it's an 'own-goal', of which SnLoozer has definitely scored.

Apologies for the pedantry and not adding any more value to the conversation 🤦

Danni675 · 25/11/2022 08:25

The amount of blatant anti-semitism on this thread is absolutely shocking.

ScribblingPixie · 25/11/2022 08:46

Like bluebottles around honey.

Are all successful Black people hypocrites? Barack Obama? Lenny Henry? Whoopie Goldberg?

Given Whoopie Goldberg's current controversies you probably don't want to bring her up here.

Onceuponatimethen · 25/11/2022 08:54

I think the number of people voting YABU actually makes the point of the documentary. People don’t tend to take antisemitism seriously. So many people have subconscious antisemitism.

If I do mention I’m from a Jewish background the average reaction I tend to get is a slightly dismayed look. Like they are mentally thinking “oh no”. I find people treat me differently once they know.

Always happy to be educated! ;)

(I think that’s what I was trying to say, but it certainly proves that I’m not a football fan!)

Everanewbie · 25/11/2022 09:36

Monetising antisemistism. I honestly cannot believe what I've read. Would any reasonable person, who doesn't wear a white hood at weekends think, let alone say that about the authors of books highlighting other forms of racism and how they feel ignored?

The education has definitely been the other way on this thread I can assure you!

PermanentTemporary · 25/11/2022 09:45

I didn't think much about antisemitism until I married a Jewish man. It is endemic in British society (and most others).

HellonHeels · 25/11/2022 09:45

BloodAndFire · 24/11/2022 19:50

it blows my mind, really. I can't imagine going on to a thread in Black Mumsnetters, or Neurodiverse Mumsnetters, and telling a group of Black people, or ND people, over and over again, that they were wrong/lying/deliberately misleading about their own first-hand experiences that they were sharing.

I also can't imagine being so obsessed and so full of hatred for another minority group that I would pursue this for days on end, and in the face of so much objective, public established evidence to the contrary, that they were 'making it all up'.

In a way I suppose this is a good thing. I am glad not to be motivated and preoccupied by my dislike of a group of people to this extent. At the same time, the behaviour is so alien to me that it frankly scares the shit out of me.

Well said.

BigglyBee · 25/11/2022 09:49

Is there a certain demographic targeting Jews specifically? It sounds completely over the top for there to be security at Jewish schools, unless there's a part of this discussion that isn't part of the mainstream.

I haven't really commented much in this thread because, as a non-Jew, my opinion isn't the one that needs to be heard. But this is too much to just read past. Nobody, but nobody, sends their kids to school in that kind of environment, without genuine fear for their safety. Plus, surely a quick google of anti-Semitic attacks on school (or indeed generally) would tell you that it is sadly a proportional response to the threat.

I always make sure I endear myself to people before I reveal that I’m Jewish (I’m a pathological people pleaser), partly so they don’t prejudge me, and partly so that if they do have negative preconceptions about Jews, I can dispel them and get them to think well of us. It’s a lot of pressure (!) and so deeply unhealthy but I think it’s probably linked to the fact that my grandparents were Holocaust survivors, and my grandfather in particular was terrified of us presenting as too obviously Jewish. I take great pride in my identity so I don’t want to hide it, but I’ve also internalised a great deal of antisemitism which manifests as self-hatred. I’ve only ever had low paying jobs (another stereotype shattered!) but am so conscious of buying extra rounds/ overtipping lest I be seen as stingy or mean. It’s so deep-seated and messed up, which is why Jews Don’t Count (the book) was so important for me. It articulated what I couldn’t, and made me feel a bit bolder. The backlash to it hurts, but I am so grateful to the non-Jews who really, really seem to get it. You give me hope ❤️

Xenia · 25/11/2022 10:08

We certainly need to fight against anti-semitism in the UK. My parents inculcated into us that what the UK fought against in WWI and for which the UK (ad of course many others) suffered so very much was because we stand so strong against it and other discriminations.

I am not Jewish so am not subject to it but I certainly remember getting into a taxi locally with an Afghan driver here in outer London who started his conversation - you're not Jewish are you.....

MissHavershamReturns · 25/11/2022 10:26

@Xenia do you think that was because you an educated middle class professional and so fitted into his stereotyping?

Notwavingbutsignalling · 25/11/2022 10:26

I think the school situation is a national issue - no one community should have to fight this on their own.

And it is a disgrace that it hasn’t been resolved in a better way by now.

Holidayfinder · 25/11/2022 10:34

@Xenia Did he really? How interesting!
You wouldn’t by any chance be a bit racist yourself eh?
Great opportunity to come on to the thread to indulge in a bit of immigrant bashing!

Holidayfinder · 25/11/2022 10:39

@Notwavingbutsignalling Are Jewish schools funded privately or by the state?
If they’re funded by the state, then surely the money they spend on security comes out of the budget, just like the very other school!

antelopevalley · 25/11/2022 10:41

Another poster said that the British government advised Jewish schools to have security and part-fund it. That is because of the risk.
If there was a risk to other schools the government would do the same with them. They do not.

Baddiel is monetizing anti-Semitism.

Is he? Is Paul Chowdry monetising Sikhism? Is Dave Chappelle monetizing Islam? Or are they talking about the things that make them them?

Your last paragraph is offensive.

Most are funded by the state, except for 1 modern orthodox private school in bushey (Immanuel college) and the haredi schools who have so little secular education they don't qualify for state funding.

Ditto and how he grew up and with what as a teen. I find many people say to me "Oh that's an unusual name.Where is it from?" and I say the region of Europe as opposed to it being Jewish. I feel that it's not necessary to say anymore. Yesterday actually I had the first experience of a medical person saying to me " I don't know how to say your name" which was a bit of a surprise as it is said like it reads but maybe she was being ultra PC.

@Snoozer11 over the top?! Have you read about the shootings in synagogue in America. There are plenty of crazies around, security is absolutely essential for Jewish institutions.

I wish I did not have to send an email and a copy of my passport before I attend a n
