England Taking The Knee

Thoughts on the team taking the knee??

I'm in no way racist, I don't care what colour someone's skin is, I have and always will judge people as people, but this really gets to me and I don't agree with the whole knee thing.

What do you think?

I'm still over here laughing that OP said something along the lines of "I have a very multicultural family so I'm not racist"

OP: "I'm not racist but...."

Exactly

I have read these messages over and over. It sure as hell is not @phishy diluting anything.

"The problem with people like you...."

What people? Brown ones?!

Hobbi · 21/11/2022 17:15

@Toffoo the team explicitly state the the gesture is in opposition to all forms of discrimination. You don't get to build your straw man this time.

Every single time🙄

Henuinequest · 21/11/2022 17:18

Why do you care? I don’t think the black players on the team would consider an anti RAcism stance or gesture virtue signalling.

What about poppies on shirts in November? Does that annoy you? Is that virus signalling?

or one or two minute silences?

or rainbow armbands or laces?

Lazy again.

Gary lineker is being paid by the BBC, not Qatar.

The world cup is happening. Journalism doesn't and can't just, y'know, stop because you don't agree with something. Ignoring the issues doesn't make them go away but highlighting them and reporting on them certainly does get people talking about things.

Like this thread, for example.

But surely signalling that one is anti racist is a good thing- is ‘virtue signalling’ always a bad thing? It sends out a good message to young Black boys in the sport that their idols are doing this.

Performative gestures matter. Rosa Parks refused to move. That was a performative gesture. Gandhi picked up a handful of salt from the sea and broke colonial law and started a revolution. The Iranian player who pretended to cut his hair. These are all ‘gestures’ and symbolic gestures have always been important for social and political change.

Absolutely spot on.

Do people think Tommie Smith and John Carlos were virtue signalling too?

The fact is that gestures like this in front of global audiences do make a difference.

HarvestThyme · 21/11/2022 17:24

I don 't get objecting to taking the knee on the grounds that it is performative or virtue-signalling. Of course it is, that's the point. Signalling that as a team or an individual, you condemn racism. The virtue is treating all races with respect, and the players kneeling signals that they believe in that virtue.

Football has a pervasive and obvious racism problem. So, no bad thing tjey're doing some virtue signalling.

The homophobia and misogyny being somewhere between tolerated and encouraged ... yeah, that's a problem. Also, they should have refused to go to Qatar.

What do you think?

Part of the problem of people claiming "I'm in no way racist" is that they generally are.

You not caring about the colour of someone's skin is part of the larger picture of racism.

I want my skin colour to be seen, I want you to acknowledge my skin colour and stop pretending like it doesnt exist to try and make yourself feel less racist.

If you are absolutely not racist, why is the England team taking the knee of such a worry to you?

Yabu I don't see any issue saying racism is bad.

Why don't you agree with it?

You have not expended on your reasons...

I don't quite get why someone who is ''in no way racist'' would have a problem with it.

As stated above, the team has repeatedly stated that the gesture is in protest against all forms of discrimination - so they've snuck their objections to homophobia and misogyny in nicely. What a world we live in when young men attempt to positively influence an institution historically plagued with racism and are called virtue signallers in a derogatory manner by white, middle class know-it-alls.

Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead · 21/11/2022 17:45

The abuse the young black players have faced from so called 'fans" is shocking

If the team want to make a gesture to support their team mates and to make it clear they are anti racist then good on them

The OP isn't here complaining that she doesnt agree with it because the team is playing in Qatar. Just that them making an anti-racist statement gets to her and she doesn't agree with it. Whilst not being racist of course... 🙄

Neanov · 21/11/2022 17:45

GreenWheat · 21/11/2022 14:20

England's players are regularly subjected to racist abuse. It is entirely appropriate that this is called out on the international stage. And today so far all three goals have come from black and mixed race players. I hope those vile trolls picking up race and goal scoring are eating their revolting words this afternoon.

You think anyone in power in Qatar gives a shit about 11 blokes taking the knee then ?

The reason they did it is probably not even being reported there

So taking the knee is allowed but not rainbow flags. Sure that will make gay youngsters feel really great.🤔

That's down to FIFA, not the team
And FIFA are doing as the Qatari Royal family has instructed.

Eh?

I don't get triggered at all but I getting fucking annoyed when people claim not to be racist because they dont see skin colour when actually that IS part of the problem of racism.

Ignoring and not seeing my skin colour doesn't mean you are not racists it means you are choosing to ignore my skin colour to make yourself feel better. Instead you are whitewashing my heritage and expecting me to be ok with that.

So take the patronising stick out of your arse, dickhead.

Hobbi · 21/11/2022 17:48

Your ignorance of the clearly stated reasons for taken the knee, dating back at least 18 months, is not my problem.

Exactly imagine you and I making threads with such titles.

It would be reported and deleted so fast. This needs to STAY. I won't be reporting because OP needs educating and not just culturally!

It’s the Iranian players we need to salute today by their refusal to sing their national anthem.

Absolutely right. And the Iranian woman in the crowd holding up a protest banner. Taking the knee doesn't affect the England players in any way shape or form.
