I think you should’ve added area as well. For £49k in the SE is very different to the same in say, Cûmbria. I do like your game though

MicRayer · 20/11/2022 19:59
  1. £47k. Public sector quango. Been at the same organisation for 24 years.

Moving around gets you the money as most places don't give internal pay rises for doing the same job well, year on year.

36 years old. 74k. Charity sector.

I won't be donating to your charity if most of my donation goes on your wages.

I don't expect charity workers to get paid a pittance, but this is taking the piss.

supertato32 · 20/11/2022 20:03

I do think it's important that salaries are discussed more! I don't think the OP meant it as a brag.... it's interesting to see how sectors vary and would be even more interesting if this thread had an even mix of women and men! If wages were more transparent many companies wouldn't get away with paying so badly, whilst they make such huge profits.

Though I found it beggars belief that the chief executive of Rotherham Housing Association was on £185k ! Seriously, how can a council ever justify paying such a wage, even if they did the job well. But to pay someone that much, and his inept department caused the death of a two year old boy is beyond me!

FingersInTheBin · 20/11/2022 20:03

I think this is a good idea. I think it’s weird how secretive we are about salaries and in my last job (I quit work to parent for a couple of years and now planning on retraining) I worked in the charity sector as a fundraising manger on £22k. I only realised how fucking terrible that was and how much I was being mugged off (I was really good at my job!) after I talked to others about their salaries.

Discussing salaries is beneficial. So is encouraging other women to push for promotions and pay rises. And I don’t think anyone is bragging and I’m not jealous of anyones salaries even though I’m currently on £0 and £22k is the highest I’ve ever earned and I’m 31.

@snowbellsxox I'm in not a particularly well paid job but it's bloody stressful! Thinking of packing it in for something I can just forget about at the end of the day. Did you regret your decision to leave?

I'm always interested in these threads. Fascinating to see which industries earn more/less than you think, and how others in my industry are paid.

I don't understand why pp get upset. We all know some people earn more than we do ourself surely. If it upsets you to see that written down, ignore the thread and leave it for those of us who are interested.

And I also don't see how it's bragging when it's done anonymously.

I feel the same as you

I like threads like this, at the least it gives inspiration for career ideas. Or you learn about sectors you’ve never thought of.

It’s off topic but I doubt the chief exec was the best person to be fired tbh.
There definitely needs to be accountability from the housing officers, repairs service, etc, of the area. I hope we hear more.

@FingersInTheBin exactly! I have to recruit freelancers in my role and I contact them and tell them the fee. Every woman accepts the fee and does the work. Every man asks for more on the fee.

I asked for a payrise this year and my boss said it wouldn't be possible and then added that she really needed to give my male colleague a pay rise first! Wtf?!

@FayeGovan im 52 and also earn about the same cleaning. Unlike many others, I don’t hate my job, I don’t stress about targets, KPI’s and I don’t hate the people I work with. I consider myself quite lucky, don’t earn much but I’m pretty stress free. Been there done that with all the corporate bullshit, not a fan x
