@FayeGovan you are not funny.

Everyone else that clearly don’t want to say this invaluable personal information , you don’t need to post in an aggressive way like you are 5 years old.

I certainly didn’t come here to brag and I think my salary is average.

You did come to here to brag. Admit it. People will respect you more if you’re honest.

Your salary is not average. So you need to get more clued up. Humble yourself and do something more productive on a Sunday evening. You and your DH need a better sense of humour if you think this crass bullshit is a game.

FingersInTheBin · 20/11/2022 20:15

supertato32 · 20/11/2022 20:12

@FingersInTheBin exactly! I have to recruit freelancers in my role and I contact them and tell them the fee. Every woman accepts the fee and does the work. Every man asks for more on the fee.

I asked for a payrise this year and my boss said it wouldn't be possible and then added that she really needed to give my male colleague a pay rise first! Wtf?!

Blimey, that’s awful @supertato32 . Did you question it?

Can I ask, are the men who negotiator usually successful? I would never consider negotiating a starting salary. I think that we women just don’t have that same confidence that men seem to have, even when we know we’re good at what we do. It’s shit.

P.S now all I can sign is ‘super tay-ay-ay-to…’

37 mum of 2, £59k, project management type role in the tech sector. I think it’s really important there is more transparency around salaries, I have no idea what anyone in my team earns, and I know new recruits into my industry ask for a lot more than I get. We should be more open. This thread is really interesting as I’ve seen a few people my age doing similar roles getting paid much more

Wish I earned more, but clearly my job is far less important than all these corporate/HR/Accountancy jobs...

But I suppose someone has to look after these people when they suffer from heart attacks from their incredibly important highly stressful and well paid jobs.

And this thread has made me feel very undervalued and inadequate for going into healthcare. Thanks OP, appreciate it!

@FayeGovan im 52 and also earn about the same cleaning. Unlike many others, I don’t hate my job, I don’t stress about targets, KPI’s and I don’t hate the people I work with. I consider myself quite lucky, don’t earn much but I’m pretty stress free. Been there done that with all the corporate bullshit, not a fan x

I think this could be me one day. One of my cleaners (different people from a company coke depending on rotas) was a nurse but loves cleaning because she finds it so satisfying and stress free.

My job isn't majorly stressful generally, I don't take it home. But it's very mentally draining. I think back to my uni days where I worked in Tesco and I did feel a lot more 'free'.

Based on the posts I think I am average if not a bit higher than average. Before posting I thought I was average according to my studies and people I know. Anyway, I didn’t come to brag, it’s all anonymous and as you said I have better things to do than bragging on MN. I am just curious! And my DH has no clue about this thread

@snowbellsxox I'm in not a particularly well paid job but it's bloody stressful! Thinking of packing it in for something I can just forget about at the end of the day. Did you regret your decision to leave?

I think I'm replying! I just think jobs are a bit part of our lives.. sometimes they can bring in the big money but what are we sacrificing for that?

Our time, our mental health and overall health especially in a desk job.

However, it is hard to break away from ..
It's the way the world goes round I suppose

Unless you find something you enjoy that pays well and that can be done :)

I'm a legally qualified HR director. It's a shot job, made shittier by people being completely dismissive of your job and considering you completely useless until they want to raise a grievance when you suddenly become their counsellor...

Legally qualified HR Director here too and agree with all you say particularly the seemingly constant need for others to be dismissive and put you down, with no real knowledge of what your job is or what you’re up against - including on this thread, unsurprisingly!

supertato32 · 20/11/2022 20:21

@FingersInTheBin haha I now have that in my head too!

To be honest we work with really small budgets but if someone is good and we know they are good and they ask for more we usually give it to them. But if they don't ask we stick to the flat rate! Yes, I hate myself for doing this! I have actually applied for two new jobs this week and if I get to be successful I will negotiate hard. My moto is, if you don't ask you don't get! I wasn't always like this and for most of my career have felt grateful just to have a job, but employers really do take the piss!

Fellow NHS here. You are absolutely valued by most people. Please do not let bullshit threads like this make you feel inferior! You're doing an amazing job.

I'll wait for this goady OP to congratulate you on everything you have achieved as well...

Is it bad I can’t actually name my current salary in K, off the top of my head? Should probably crunch some numbers. Was 36.5K employed before mat leave, near enough matched that in the 2 years self employed after that, then dropped a workstream earlier this year as it was all a bit too much to cope with. Now on a lot less, would guess about 28 - 30K.
Working in two (previously 3) completely different sectors - not going to name them as it would be very outing, one is very niche and can’t imagine there is anyone else in the same combination of sectors! Much happier in my current situation, and very aware I had a big dose of good luck to transition to full time SE as the right opportunities came up at the right time.

Thanks so much, I appreciate you saying that.

It appears only 5 or 6 figure salaries get congratulations on this thread! Ignoring the fact that if you go into nursing you're never going to reach that!
