Stopped on the street today by a lady looking for a shop. She asked for the nearest “Shrov-Ski”.
Explained further that it’s a jewellery shop. I eventually cottoned on that she meant “Swaa-Rov-Ski”
Bit like “hyper-bole” with me as well... (until I heard it said on the News!) And the name “Beat-Rice”.

I'd have said it like you, I've never heard anyone say 'Shrovski'.

HarlanPepper · 19/11/2022 22:02

I've only just found out that the last "e" in dilettante isn't silent. Luckily it's not a word I say very much.

dindot · 19/11/2022 22:05

I'd also say it like you did!

2pinkginsplease · 19/11/2022 22:05

I pronounce it like you Swar-ov-ski. If you Google it that’s how it tells you how it’s pronounced.

It is silent...

PurBal · 19/11/2022 22:09

I say it like you. My mind was blown when I learnt how to pronounce L’Occitane.

DarkAndDusty · 19/11/2022 22:10

Dillettante: I've never heard anyone pronounce the last "e" but google is telling me that it is indeed pronounced dillettant-aye. Which I guess makes sense given it's an Italian word. But weird that no one says it that way

HelloBunny · 19/11/2022 22:11

I know my other examples aren’t the same, really, but just for example. TBF “Beat-Rice” was in a book I read as a child, and I did think it was such a strange name... I only heard it said years later!

Yeah, we used to have the Lok-see-tan v Losseetaine debate in work, every Christmas... They have a pronunciation guide on the website, too!

That's how Google says its pronounced, the way you say it.

Last e in dilettante is only silent in US pronounciation. In UK it is not silent.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/11/2022 22:12

Same here.

It really isn't silent. The word comes from Italian (not French), so the final e is pronounced (in English, usually as "ay" or "ee")

Lost the quote. I would have said it the same as you.

I've never heard it said with a silent e.

onepieceoflollipop · 19/11/2022 22:15

That's really odd. It's a French word. The French would never pronounce the final e. I fear the Americans may have this one right...

I remember reading the name Persephone in a book when I was younger thinking it was pronounced as 'percy-phone', I even told my dad what a strange name it was!

Vegay · 19/11/2022 22:19

@SquirrelRed you are not alone 🤣

HelloBunny · 19/11/2022 22:19

I’m the same with awry....

Daiquiri would be similar to Lick-quer v Licker, I suppose...

Lock- si -tan?
I've been saying it wrong all along then.
Does anyone know what they actually sell?

DarkAndDusty · 19/11/2022 22:21

@CaptainMyCaptain I'm from the americas which must explain it. Glad I read this thread Blush

OneFrenchEgg · 19/11/2022 22:23

Oooh I thought it was lock - e - tayne - what is it?
Swarovski - I think I say sh-rof-ski but my mouth can't make the word anymore I've said it out loud that much in 60 seconds

HelloBunny · 19/11/2022 22:24

Posh toiletries.

I’m trying to figure out what dilettante means (I’m wordy so I refuse to Google). It will come to me eventually... (unless someone tells me now!)
