Stopped on the street today by a lady looking for a shop. She asked for the nearest “Shrov-Ski”.
Explained further that it’s a jewellery shop. I eventually cottoned on that she meant “Swaa-Rov-Ski”
Bit like “hyper-bole” with me as well... (until I heard it said on the News!) And the name “Beat-Rice”.

I have never known how to pronounce Swarovski but I prefer real diamonds.

felded · 19/11/2022 23:06

@threelittlefigs I don't think you are, if you say them both fast they sound similar 🤷🏻‍♀️

I read the name Hermione in a book when I was much younger (pre-Potter) and thought it was Her-me-own.
My (posh) brother-in-law put me right.

Had switched to reading the thread backwards so had missed this post, good to see I’m not alone 😀

It is silent...

It isn’t.

Mizzled... Love it.

I go with Lox-ee-tan for the French cosmetics company (from the region and language of the region).

With Swarovski being Austrian/Bohemian I would have thought it should be Svar-off-ski, but I can't find a definitive source that I trust.

You have to remember that many of the short videos on You Tube really aren't correct. An example of this is Moschino where some say Moss-Sheeno, but it should be Moss-Keeno.

HelloBunny · 19/11/2022 23:05

I say -

Per-Jho
Le-Vay

I should probably clarify that I'm Scottish so per-jho would have a hard R in the middle in my accent Grin people around here say it like a church pew. Pew-zho.

Totally wrong but I'd look like a wang if I started saying it properly!

I remember reading the name Persephone in a book when I was younger thinking it was pronounced as 'percy-phone', I even told my dad what a strange name it was!

Naughty and Crosses?

I always thought it was pronounced 'grim-ACE' to rhyme with 'face' (thanks, Mum! But so did she, so easily done).

onepieceoflollipop · 19/11/2022 23:09

Oh and Proust the French writer.

I heard someone say ‘Proost’ which I believe is correct.
in my head will always be ‘Prowst’

I once had to go and greet a new doctor in our team. as a lowly teenage admin girl. She was called Persephone I said "morning percy phone how was your journey" fml

Ok….I’m this old and still read it as percy phone, will someone please enlighten me 😂

HealthWorries123 · 19/11/2022 23:10

Haha I would pronounce it the same way as you.

Don’t worry, I’ve pronounced Rioja as Ree-oh-ja and quays and Qu-ays 😳🫣

Per-seff-oh-nee

MimiArm · 19/11/2022 23:10

At the risk of making myself look very stupid ... every time I see an address ending in Demesne, in my head I'm saying Duh-mes-ney 🫣

Took me a while to realise it's pronounced domain 😳

I still have to think about it when I see it.

onepieceoflollipop · 19/11/2022 23:05

@amusedbush
i thought the 2 adidas versions are one English and one American.
its definitely addy-dass for me!

I'm not sure, to be honest! I know it's addy-dass because it's named after the founder but I'd never heard anyone say anything other than ah-DEE-diss until I was an adult. Born and raised in central Scotland.

threelittlefigs · 19/11/2022 23:11

amusedbush · 19/11/2022 23:01

I thought the "Tar-jay" thing is a joke to make it sound classy, the same way people here call Primark "Primani"?

There are a couple of brands I know for a fact I pronounce incorrectly but if I started saying them properly, I'd stick out like a sore thumb here. For example, I know that it's "Nikey" but 99% of people around here say "Nike". Similarly Ah-DEE-dis instead of Addy-DAS. Or PYOO-zho instead of peu-zho (Peugeot). I'd be written off as a try-hard Grin

I always found it odd that everyone I know (including me) says ah-dee-dass. When it's obviously incorrect as the founder was Adi Dassler! ...Adi-das.

Sew-vign-yon?

I can say it, it’s hard to write it phonetically!

Bar - TEN - der

Thank you! Although I just googled it and you are spot on!

Jyn · 19/11/2022 23:12

Add me to the ‘Her me own knee’ group. Mainwaring/Mannering and Menzies/Mingus confuse me too.

sentientpuddle · 19/11/2022 23:13

justasking111 · 19/11/2022 22:47

OH had a disagreement with a barmaid over this pronunciation. How do you say Sauvignon?

Oops, wrong quote.
That was:
bar - TEN - der

Naughty and Crosses?

I always thought it was pronounced 'grim-ACE' to rhyme with 'face' (thanks, Mum! But so did she, so easily done).

So did I! I had only ever seen it written down but then I said it out loud to a friend when I was about 16 and she laughed (quite nastily) at me. She smugly pointed out that furnace wasn't pronounced fur-NACE.

In fact, I was ranting about what a cow she was about it just a couple of weeks ago, despite the fact it happened in 2006 BlushGrin

Moet is dutch isn't it originally hence the hard T?

Dutch name but French man 😁

Caplin · 19/11/2022 23:16

OOlivePenderghast · 19/11/2022 22:42

@Caplin Have you met Mireille Guiliano?

Afraid not, I’m based in a Maison

poshme · 19/11/2022 23:17

As a child i read a book and thought it was odd that anyone called their child 'so-silly'. Then I met someone called Cecily...

Also guilty of Percy-Phone and Hermy-own.

Wheredoallthepensgo · 19/11/2022 23:18

@eurochick it's not French, it's Italian. So yes the e is pronounced.
