To not realise I was saying this wrong...

Stopped on the street today by a lady looking for a shop. She asked for the nearest “Shrov-Ski”.
Explained further that it’s a jewellery shop. I eventually cottoned on that she meant “Swaa-Rov-Ski”
Bit like “hyper-bole” with me as well... (until I heard it said on the News!) And the name “Beat-Rice”.

I wonder if Supernanny ever realised that 'acceptible' is not pronounced 'asseptible'

JoBrodie · 27/11/2022 13:43

It took me a few goes to say 'pedagogy' at all, let alone 'correctly' the first couple of times I needed to say it out loud. Pedd-uh-godge-ee seems to be the largely accepted way, but I think anything goes if you can get it out in one go ;)

It's to do with the way in which material is taught in classrooms / universities etc.

There's also pedagogical and pedagoLOgical. I assume it's actually the same word and someone added in an extra 'lo' and it stuck, but I've not really looked into it indepth (reminds me of “Nanny Ogg knew how to start spelling 'banana', but didn't know how you stopped” from Terry Pratchett).

Slightly off topic but i saw someone type “super seeded” rather than “superseded” … didnt have the heart to correct her

BobSacamono · 28/11/2022 19:13

My SIL hates my guts so I’ve never corrected her mispronunciation of the word ‘etiquette’.

I know these are French name places and as a French speaker I pronounced them incorrectly until I heard them being spoken:

Reims - Rance as I'm rhymes with France but with a throatier R

Mulhouse - rhymes with Toulouse ie mulooze.

Troyes apparently is Trois. Is that correct?

KirstenBlest · 28/11/2022 20:16

@Whiskyvodka , yes - like trois (tRwah)

Arles, when talking about our holiday near there my partner and I pronounce it like we're simultaneously being throttled and gargling, with just a dash of pirate - Ahrrrgghhhles.

If you’re my SIL, then no, you’re pronouncing it perfectly Grin

In a usual situation schools cannot stop a parent from parental responsibility to collect their child. However, if there has been allegations of abuse and police have been contacted then they will have to follow their safeguarding procedures. Unless that parent has been investigated and was cleared of the safeguarding concerns.
