To not realise I was saying this wrong...

Stopped on the street today by a lady looking for a shop. She asked for the nearest “Shrov-Ski”.
Explained further that it’s a jewellery shop. I eventually cottoned on that she meant “Swaa-Rov-Ski”
Bit like “hyper-bole” with me as well... (until I heard it said on the News!) And the name “Beat-Rice”.

What about Moët?!

I found out how to say it after winning a competition with them….when I saw it no one knows what I’m on about 🤣🤣

Lock- si -tan?
I've been saying it wrong all along then.
Does anyone know what they actually sell?

I asked one of the the sales people in the shop and they told me it was pronounced lock-si-tan. I’d also been saying it wrong!

YABU to assume the person asking you was saying it correctly!

L'Occitane from the Languedoc where they used to speak the language of Oc. Unfortunately the speakers of Oc also had some heretical beliefs which the Pope disapproved of and they were all hounded to death in terrible ways. Kate Mosse has written assorted novels featuring the Cathars, the heretics, for further info. Anyway, its Lok-sitan isn't it? And, pp, L'Occitane sells very nice fragrances in various forms, prepared with herbs from Provence.

It's 'mwett', isn't it? As it's a Dutch name. Yeah I've been mocked for pronouncing it correctly several times.

The one my brain just will not accept is minutiae. I know the correct pronunciation, but my brain just always desperately wants to say min-YOU-tay 😂

OOlivePenderghast · 19/11/2022 22:36

Is it Mo-et?
Ive only realised the written word or-ry and people saying a-wry are the same after reading this 😮
I did know how to pronounce L’Occitane though.

Caplin · 19/11/2022 22:37

It is mo-et, I work for them…

Caplin · 19/11/2022 22:39

It is because Moët and Chandon are both names rather than’words’, so Moët keeps the hard T.

I remember reading the name Persephone in a book when I was younger thinking it was pronounced as 'percy-phone', I even told my dad what a strange name it was!

When I was a kid I couldn't figure out why anyone would call a baby O Liver.

tillytoodles1 · 19/11/2022 22:41

My SiL had a doll called Penelope that she called Penny-Lope. Even as an adult she still called her that even though she knew it wasn't correct.

felded · 19/11/2022 22:41

Moet is dutch isn't it originally hence the hard T?

Knickerthief1 · 19/11/2022 22:41

There's always a big debate in my family over chipotle. The correct pronunication is 'chi-poat-lay' but my family think I'm being ridiculous and everyone just pronounces it 'chi-po-lay' with a silent T!

OOlivePenderghast · 19/11/2022 22:42

@Caplin Have you met Mireille Guiliano?

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 19/11/2022 22:42

eurochick · 19/11/2022 22:17

That's really odd. It's a French word. The French would never pronounce the final e. I fear the Americans may have this one right...

Not French at all. It’s Italian

L'occitan is still spoken in the Limousin, they even have dictée competitions in it. And a firefox version, or used to.

I know how it should be pronounced, but always want to say chip-oat-ul!

I say chi-poat-lay but I’ve met people who say chi-pot-al?

Enko · 19/11/2022 22:46

Those who didn't know the e on dilettante. Are you mixing it up with another word like dilatant or diligent? (genuine question)

op Dilettante is an amateur who engages in an activity without serious intentions and who pretends to have knowledge. I think we all know a couple 😃

inappropriateraspberry · 19/11/2022 22:46

Google says it's dill-uh-tan-ti. I always thought it was French with a silent E!

I say it like you. My mind was blown when I learnt how to pronounce L’Occitane.

Ok... help us out

Damn. Don't know why that didn't work

Nellodee · 19/11/2022 22:46

I always read segue as seeg, and had no idea it was the same word as “Segway”.
