Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

We have, admittedly because it's chilly in the mornings and sometimes putting the heating on is less effort than getting dressed straight away. 😂
No doubt we'll be back to opening windows wondering why it's so hot very soon as DP has a habit of putting it on, forgetting, then complaining that he (and by that point, everyone else) is too hot.

biscuitbadger · 19/11/2022 23:38

Just for an hour in the morning and maybe 30 mins in the eve to take the edge off.

However, the washing isn't drying and the mould/damp we've always had a bit of is noticeably worse, so we are running dehumidifier constantly instead.

@biscuitbadger have you checked out how much your dehumidifier is costing you? They vary enormously & some are stupidly expensive!

I presume you don't have any windows open when you have it on?

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/11/2022 18:41

Oof. It's going to hit freezing tonight/tomorrow morning (Yorkshire).

Indeed, thank God for my log burner!

Oof. It's going to hit freezing tonight/tomorrow morning (Yorkshire).

It's going to be a cold one where I am in Scotland tonight so we will have to have it on for a bit tonight . I do try to follow the guidance from WHO about keeping the Temp. between 18-21 c using my phone app.

Schlaar · 19/11/2022 23:41

We also have a wood burning stove, which we can’t use because of the kids. We risked it a couple of weeks ago because we were desperately cold and couldn’t afford to use the central heating. On the third night our youngest was rushed to A&E with burns from touching the stove. Wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for these fucking ridiculous energy prices forcing us to make unsafe choices.

@Schlaar how is your youngest doing? How old??

have you asked on market place etc etc if anyone has an old fire guard or play pen you can repurpose? I'm sure they'd be glad to rehome it!

otherwise you'll just have to keep them with you, even when you nip to the loo if there's not another adult watching them.

id love a wood burning stove. I miss the big open fireplace at the old house. Too many complications to putting one in here, unfortunately!

TruJay · 20/11/2022 18:58

We put ours on beginning of October when we brought our newborn home. Even if we hadn’t‘t have had baby, it was pretty cold that week so we’d have put it on anyway and have been using it since.

Menopau · 20/11/2022 18:59

Mine is set to 18 and on a reduced timer. I often find myself turning the thermostat down anyway as I am in a new build in the SE and it’s not really very cold tbh

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 19:00

IncessantNameChanger · 19/11/2022 23:57

Ours went on when the temp dropped below 14 but now it's not heating the radiators up 🥶 more expense that we can't afford to get the heating fixed but our boiler is a 2008 modle. God knows what we will do. It worked two weeks ago!

We are thinking of getting a oil filled radiator. I think they are cheaper to run?

@IncessantNameChanger

what make is your boiler?

Worcester are very helpful if it's one of theirs.

Menopau · 20/11/2022 19:00

I have a little dehumidifier for the room I have washing in as well

Delatron · 20/11/2022 19:02

Mine has been coming on in the morning and evening since mid Sept i think. But I refuse to be cold in my own home. If I have a jumper on and I’m still cold it goes on. I’m not wearing gloves inside…

I never have it on overnight though.

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 19:03

notangelinajolie · 20/11/2022 00:08

No heating here. But then again we have no radiators because we are in the middle of a house renovation. I won’t lie and say it’s not been cold - it’s been bloody freezing. Not helped by no roof and the builder leaving the front door wide open whenever he is here (which isn’t often 😕) We are living here miserably with nothing but hot water bottles and many many layers of clothing. I’m about to go to bed and I can’t say I’m looking forward to snuggling under the duvet because it feels damp and soggy 🥶
Looking on the bright side we don’t have to worry about heating bills 😋

@notangelinajolie I'm sure the renovation will be fabulous, but that sounds fucking miserable in the meantime!!

How about buying an electric blanket for your bed so that it feels dry & warm.

and an electric throw for in the room you're living in?

or stay with friends/family??

How long until you're supposed to have the roof etc sorted?

Delatron · 20/11/2022 19:05

It’s going to be freezing tonight so not mild anymore.

Always4Brenner · 20/11/2022 19:06

I keep sitting room warm all day then bedroom an hour before bed to warm the room up.

Decafflatteplease · 20/11/2022 19:07

We've just started this week having it on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.. basically when DC are getting up and when they are going to bed. The rest of the time eg when they at school DH and I coping with layers, duvets wrapped round us and hot water bottles.

Basically terrified of the cost as 1 hour this year is equal to 3 hours last year in terms of cost!

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 19:07

DixonD · 20/11/2022 00:15

It’s been on this week for the first time this autumn but only because I have coronavirus. We have a lot burner too and have been using that for a few weeks now.

@DixonD

you definitely need it on!! The last thing you need is anything on top of covid!!

I hope you're better soon ☕️ 💐

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 19:10

Asthenia · 20/11/2022 04:43

We have put it on from 6-7pm every evening since last week so the house is a bit warmer for when the baby comes out of her bath and we get her ready for bed. I worry about her getting cold! If we didn’t have her then we wouldn’t have put it on yet.

Absolutely!! It's horrible getting out of a warm bath/shower when it's cold. Must be extremely nasty for a baby as they can't swear & complain & wont understand it'll be much better when dry & clothes back on!!

FourTeaFallOut · 20/11/2022 19:12

Yes, the house kicks on the heating when it falls below 19.5c. According to hive, the heating has been on an average of 2 and a half hours each day this week. Although I have boosted it a few times to 20.5c to dry washing.

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 19:13

JackTorrance · 20/11/2022 06:34

@IncessantNameChanger The most likely reason for that is that your boiler has lost pressure. If you take a note of the make you can look on youtube and there will probably be a video showing you how to repressive it.
It happened to mine last week and was easy enough, just needed to turn two screws with a screwdriver till it filled back up over a minute or two then close them again.

Your boiler will have a pressure gauge, if you check it and its on zero there's your answer.

@IncessantNameChanger
@JackTorrance

Yes, I forgot to mention that, it's SO easy to fix the pressure yourself!

BiasedBinding · 20/11/2022 06:40

I do find the “no” answers which then casually mention log burners quite funny

@BiasedBinding

me too!!

i think we must have a new rule! Declare your alternative heating up front 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Theydoyaknow · 20/11/2022 19:15

Absolutely it is on. Life is too short for putting on coats to go to bed.

Topgub · 20/11/2022 19:16

I'm finding it quite psychologically interesting.

I absolutely would have been freezing before this point and the heating would have been on. But now Im reluctant to put it on, I'm not as cold?

I don't really get it.

The thermometer says around 15 degrees but we're coping OK with that at the moment

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 19:16

user1483387154 · 20/11/2022 06:43

no heating on, -1 degrees outside but my flat is a toasty 20 degrees still. I will probably put it on for about 2 weeks total this year. Very lucky situation to be in.

@user1483387154

what was it like in the heatwave?

Badnewsoracle · 20/11/2022 19:22

Me too. We haven't lit that yet this winter either. Did have the heating on today though, I don't think it was necessary but the in laws were cold.

@Schlaar yes! But don't take it personally, it's shared around liberally!!

catgirl1976 · 20/11/2022 19:22

@NewBootsAndRanty I didn't know that about the first hour being more expensive - I put it on to dry some clothes a while ago - thought £2.80 an hours - sod that and turned it off

I might put it on later and see how much it goes down but surely it's still burning the same amount of gas? (Not very clued up on these things.....)
