Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

@lobsterkiller Have you seen insulated lining paper? It has a layer of polystyrene type material behind the actual lining paper so you can still paint directly on to it or use it as normal lining paper. You buy the matching glue that goes with it and it makes a massive difference to the temperature of the walls.

We also have a wood burning stove, which we can’t use because of the kids. We risked it a couple of weeks ago because we were desperately cold and couldn’t afford to use the central heating. On the third night our youngest was rushed to A&E with burns from touching the stove. Wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for these fucking ridiculous energy prices forcing us to make unsafe choices.

Ouch! Could you get an old fashioned fire guard? Ebay/reclamation yard?

lobsterkiller · 20/11/2022 08:11

@Singleandproud Yes, I've seen it and I'm planning to use this in some of the rooms. I've heard it's very good. 🙂

primeoflife · 20/11/2022 08:21

Yes because if not I'll get mould that will cost me more than the heating to solve

Ouch! When I was a child, my parents fitted a guard in front of the fire to keep us safe. You can still get them…

Expensive fuel isn't to blame for not supervising your children or making their home environment safer.

ScarlettDarling · 20/11/2022 08:29

Yep, it’s been on for an hour or two every day for a few weeks. My monthly direct debit for energy is twice what I was paying last year but it’s still affordable at £212 so I’m going to stay warm.
Really sorry for people who are struggling though, it’s awful being cold.

passmeapepsi · 20/11/2022 08:32

Only live in a small one bed bungalow which luckily heats up quick and holds the heat well. Had mine on since September but not all day. Morning and then at night for a few hours.

crossstitchingnana · 20/11/2022 08:50

Had mine on about a month. I find my washing doesn't dry without it on. Plus I am worried about mould. Not having heating on to save money, then having to redecorate seems like a waste of time.

Mummadeze · 20/11/2022 08:54

3 hours Mornings and 4 hours evenings. Just suffer in between but always no the end of the suffering is in site. Appreciate I am lucky to be able to afford 7 hours a day of heating though.

TheGoogleMum · 20/11/2022 08:55

We managed without until earlier this month! To be honest I wasn't too cold yet most the time but DH works from home and was feeling colder, and DD caught a cough so we thought a warmer house might help. We did turn the thermostat down a little though so it isn't on too often

cptartapp · 20/11/2022 09:01

Yes. It's chilly here and we use it to dry the washing quickly.

We have a guard. I’d moved it to put a log on the fire. Then youngest sneaked up behind me and slammed the door closed. The fire shouldn’t have been on - I should be able to afford to use the gas heating like I have since they were born.

Ours went on for the first time yesterday as it was 15.3 degrees in the living room.

It only took an hour to heat the house to 18 though and then it went off again.

BooksAndHooks · 20/11/2022 09:08

Ours not on yet. Until Friday it was still 19/20 degrees indoors. It’s now dipping to 18 and briefly 17 in the very early morning. We’ve got the heating set to 16 so it won’t come on for a while yet. I am still putting washing out when it’s not raining then drying near a dehumidifier to finish it off. The washing is a bigger problem than cold at the moment.

I doubt we will have it on much in December as the tree blocks the main radiator in the living room so not much point paying to heat the tree.

WhiteFire · 20/11/2022 09:29

Has been on, but the boiler is currently not working, so just have the gas fire in the lounge. It's cold.

My MIL never had CH, just a gas fire in both rooms downstairs, she was mid terrace so that helped a bit, but it was still cold upstairs.

girlmom21 · 20/11/2022 12:27

Wow @girlmom21 you’re a real twat aren’t you?

If thinking that keeping your young child away from a hot stove is common sense makes you a twat, then yes I am.

Itawapuddytat · 20/11/2022 12:30

On a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the afternoon. We are in Central Scotland.

WimbyAce · 20/11/2022 13:49

I have set ours to come on morning and evening and thermostat is at 16 so hopefully won't be too expensive. Will also put it on if needed in the day if the kids are here, I should be able to manage with extra layers.

mamabear715 · 20/11/2022 13:51

Not yet. I think it's snuck on once when I had the back door wide open (to air the room) but that's all. The front room seems to be a more or less steady 18C, plenty warm enough up to now.

LaughingCat · 20/11/2022 15:55

WishingWell5 · 19/11/2022 23:20

If you aren't putting the heating on at all, are you not suffering with mould?

No - our windows are vented and lintels are stone rather than wood. Not even a bit of condensation yet. The house is only a decade old though, and built not to get damp. The crummy conservatory on the other hand, has no heating and I do need to blast a dehumidifier in there every so often.

To everyone who seems to think we’re wearing gloves in bed…nooooo! Socks in bed and gloves while we’re gaming/working. Hands get cold when you’re typing for a few hours. 😁.

Gloves in bed would be an instant game changer 😁

Why are you living that way ? Are you really financially struggling ? If so I understand, other way , why are you putting your family through discomfort?

KitchenDiscos · 20/11/2022 16:08

Currently at FIL’s house in the north east of England, it’s freezing, no heating or fire on. He’s not hard up, just tight. I can’t wait to leave…

Our house is 16 or 17 degrees without it and I find it unpleasant. Working from home I already have a jumper, wool poncho, fingerless gloves, plug in heater if needed. In bed have winter duvet, blanket, hot water bottle, decent pj's. No where else to go really! So heating set on 19 degrees and put the wood burner on a few times in the evenings. Heating cost is offset against savings of commuting though for me.

DH works from home too. He doesn't put the heating on and the temp sits around 18-19. I've noticed his teabag consumption has increased though! Which of course means more electricity boiling the kettle! But as you say, no commuting costs help.
