Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

Why are you living that way ? Are you really financially struggling ? If so I understand, other way , why are you putting your family through discomfort?

@Wiluli - oh, we’re just not that cold yet. A little bit here and there but not enough to put fires or CH on. We’ve layered up and have blankets, no children, immunocompromised/ill or elderly here, and the house holds heat really well and doesn’t get damp…so we’ve not had an overriding reason to put it on, especially as we’re trying to save money for our house move. We run quite hot as well…some people seem to really feel the cold, others don’t, like us. I would agree, if we felt very uncomfortable then we’d put it on, definitely.

I live in a very old house which if I don’t heat gets very mouldy on the top floor. So yes it’s been on for over a month. We do have a wood burner which does the grunt work and then I’ll top it up when it’s really cold with the GSH

@lobsterkiller Have you seen insulated lining paper? It has a layer of polystyrene type material behind the actual lining paper so you can still paint directly on to it or use it as normal lining paper. You buy the matching glue that goes with it and it makes a massive difference to the temperature of the walls.

@Singleandproud - this is the post that has made the whole thread worth it. I had no clue this existed but given we need all the walls stripping in the new house - this is hugely interesting to know about! Definitely investing in this. Thank you!

A few hours most afternoons/evenings and thermostat set at 18C max. More because of damp than cold though, my house is really not coping with the constant rain at all with the roof now leaking and a damp patch on the kitchen wall. 😑 It hasn't rained this much here for years.

Singleandproud · 20/11/2022 16:40

@LaughingCat I did my flat out with it when I moved in a decade ago and it keeps the place toasty or at least toaster than without it. Prioritise the outside walls if you can't afford to do every wall as I think the price has increased quite alot since I bought it.

The only downside to it is that if you hit the lining paper with something it can leave a dent so you have to be a bit careful moving furniture around etc. I think you can buy an additional protective layer to go over the top now.

sanityisamyth · 20/11/2022 16:41

Nope (south wales) and it won't be. We have Oodies to keep warm!

GreenWhiteViolet · 20/11/2022 16:43

Haven't had mine on yet - currently 14/15 degrees and I'm comfortable with one more layer than I usually have, plus an extra blanket at night. Opening windows in rooms when I'm not using them, especially when there's laundry drying.

I like the cold and in previous years would only heat to about 17 degrees anyway, so it's not such a drastic change for me (hate the heat though, so this summer was dreadful!)

I'll turn it on if I do start to feel cold in a way that layering clothes won't solve. There are no children in the house and other family members feel the same as me about it, so we've been fine so far.

Zanatdy · 20/11/2022 16:44

Mines been on since September first thing and early evening. In the day when WFH twice a week I use the log burner if cold, but not had it on much as fairly mild

They look very similar to this.

My DM had one of these. I wish I had kept it but when she passed away, DS was a toddler so we thought we'd better not have it. I didn't realise they put out so much heat! I will have to get one.

catgirl1976 · 20/11/2022 16:46

Not on

It is 11 degrees in the house but we have blankets so are not cold

SwedishEdith · 20/11/2022 16:51

Is polystyrene lining paper safe? I know the polystyrene ceiling tiles are a fire hazard but is the paper different?

I put it on from 6.30-11pm a few nights ago. Energy meter says that cost about a tenner so I won't be doing that again unless the temperature drops substantially.

Omg.. a tenner?! We have ours on for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours at night so could be spending that every day. We only have electricity but is a well-insulated new-build.

catgirl1976 · 20/11/2022 17:48

A tanner sounds about right for that time period. My smart meter says it’s £2.70 per hour to put the heating on 😱

The first hour is always the most expensive as you get your house up to temperature - it goes down after that as it's just maintaining temperature at x°, rather than having to go from <cold> to x°.

teenagetantrums · 20/11/2022 17:55

We have had ours on for the first time this weekend. First time it's been cold here in South West. Life's to short to be cold and we have a credit on engery bill that we built up to pay for heating.

RampantIvy · 20/11/2022 17:59

It has been a maximum of 8 degrees the last few days. We are sucking up the extra expense and keeping the thermostat at its normal setting. DH is unwell and I refuse to go back to the days of feeling so cold that I can't function properly.

I feel for those who have to decide between heating and eating, but I will not take part in the Four Yorkshiremen competitive" I'm so tough that I can only wear a T-shirt when it is 12 degrees" mantra that appears every autumn and winter on MN.

DelphiniumBlue · 20/11/2022 18:26

To be fair, my house is a fairly draughty one, and is only partially double glazed. But it is terraced, so not as cold as some. A new build should be more energy efficient, I guess.
I was shocked, though!

This same thread has been posted about 77 times since mid September. Confused

@PurpleButterflyWings

& yet you still haven't learnt that you can scroll past a thread. You don't have to post on every single one!

MichaelFabricantWig · 20/11/2022 18:31

Yes mine has been on as normal. It’s cold and wet here and I don’t like my house being cold, I’m not willing to just heat the people and not the house.

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 18:32

PickAChew · 19/11/2022 22:47

Of course it fucking is. It's been cold and wet all week and the mould is appearing.

@PickAChew really, so quickly?? (Mould)

I can't remember, do you own or rent?

how old are the DC?

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 18:35

Els1e · 19/11/2022 22:57

Yep, heating on at times. I am caring for elderly mum who is affected by cold. Also we did planning and overpaid since last March, to get us through. However, not sure if we’ve done enough.

@Els1e Have you checked you're getting all the grants your mum is entitled too. Many still aren't being claimed!

HeraldicBlazoning · 20/11/2022 18:36

InTheMiddle23 · 19/11/2022 21:45

We're the same. I can't see us putting it on before December. It's still pretty mild.

6c in Glasgow. That's not "pretty mild". Heating is on, thermostat set to 20c.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 20/11/2022 18:41

Ours is on a timer, and is set to 18° morning and evening (14° overnight and during the day) and has come on a few times, mostly early morning. Our house is v well insulated, so generally doesn't come on in the evening. Obviously that will change when it gets colder!

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/11/2022 18:41

Oof. It's going to hit freezing tonight/tomorrow morning (Yorkshire).

LisaD1 · 20/11/2022 18:41

Our has been on a few weeks, it’s set to 19 so kicks in automatically. I have osteoarthritis and painful joints so I feel the cold more than the rest of the household, I get round this by having a heated blanket when needed. Nothing to do with costs, the rest of family don’t like to be too hot.
