Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

Ours is on a nest thermostat thingy so it comes on automatically based on temperature. Eg its set to come on below 15/16 at night, and above 18 in the day in the week when its only me in, 19 on weekends when kids are here.

@NewBootsAndRanty I didn't know that about the first hour being more expensive - I put it on to dry some clothes a while ago - thought £2.80 an hours - sod that and turned it off

I might put it on later and see how much it goes down but surely it's still burning the same amount of gas? (Not very clued up on these things.....)

The first hour gets the house/ room/ thermostat area up to temperature (will sometimes take longer, sometimes not as long depending on house construction, base temperature, temperature set at and where the thermostat is located). Once at temperature the thermostat will switch the boiler off until it drops below the set temperature +/- whatever degree your settings dictate. It will then only switch back on when it gets below that temperature, so the boiler won't be running continuously. It's why thermostat placement (if only one) and calibration are so important.

Only for an hour , when our noses get cold.

girlmom21 · 20/11/2022 19:31

@SkylightSkylight it's interesting - ive never seen your username before today and I've done an AS and it looks like you've been using that name for at least a couple of months. From what I can see, we've only ever been on two of the same threads.

I never thought I'd compare myself to Jeremy Corbyn but here I am. Rent free.

Not on

It is 11 degrees in the house but we have blankets so are not cold

I need a blanket I can take into the shower. I don't want to get naked & get in the shower & oi most definitely will not want to get out!!!! 🥶
I wish I'd got the the dual fuel heating element for the big towel rail, but the bathroom fitter said they were expensive to run & crap!

I'm going to get new thermostats etc (hive/whatever) and I'll see what can be done then! (It's currently also the safety rad - so no thermostat.

Two towelling robes are what you want. They'll dry quickly. If you had a glass shower partition you could get one of those hangers for wreaths etc that go over the top and reach over the glass for the second robe as you turn the shower off.

CheapWine · 20/11/2022 19:35

Yes, we put a two hour Hive boost on once a day, usually about 4pm, Yorkshire. It’s set to go up to 20 degrees. I used to have it higher, but not anymore. 20 is absolutely fine and feels toasty.

This is what my heating does, going by yesterday's readings. On at half three through to midnight:
3.30-4.30pm 8kwh
4:30-5.30 2.8 kwh
5.30-6.30 2.5kwh
6:30-7:30 2.1kwh
7:30-8:30 2.3kwh
8.30-9.30pm 4.5kwh (I turned it up a degree to 19°)
9:30-10:30 3.7kwh
10:30-11:30 4.2kwh
11:30-midnight 1.3kwh

FourTeaFallOut · 20/11/2022 19:37

Set to drop to 0c here tonight and a high of 7c.

DdraigGoch · 20/11/2022 19:38

North Wales, house is 187 years old so not great insulation. Fire has been lit most evenings in the last week as the temperature has dropped noticeably.

On the third night our youngest was rushed to A&E with burns from touching the stove. Wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for these fucking ridiculous energy prices forcing us to make unsafe choices.

Ouch! When I was a child, my parents fitted a guard in front of the fire to keep us safe. You can still get them…

I put my clothes on this to dry

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 19/11/2022 21:45

Ours is off, but we're in the south east so it hasn't really been that cold yet.

I'm south east and have had the heating on for weeks!

Coldymccold · 20/11/2022 19:52

Ours is on lasted until mid November but it's cold and wetnwjere we are in the north so it's set to click on at 17 now

Mumlifedc · 20/11/2022 20:24

Tried to put heating on Friday night found out it's not working now waiting for someone to fix it on weds

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 20:26

RampantIvy · 20/11/2022 17:59

It has been a maximum of 8 degrees the last few days. We are sucking up the extra expense and keeping the thermostat at its normal setting. DH is unwell and I refuse to go back to the days of feeling so cold that I can't function properly.

I feel for those who have to decide between heating and eating, but I will not take part in the Four Yorkshiremen competitive" I'm so tough that I can only wear a T-shirt when it is 12 degrees" mantra that appears every autumn and winter on MN.

@RampantIvy it's definitely important to keep DH warm, yourself too!

I don't (yet anyway) have to choose between heating & eating but I've not put the heating on yet, partly to prevent the heating v eating situation arising, partly because it hasn't been really needs here yet (previous years I've had had it on, just for the 'cosy' feeling, but I'm fine with layers. For now. I have lots of clothes, blankets, blah blah.

But the thing that I know helps is that I know I 'can' put the heating on if I want to. It's just so fucking miserable when you're unable to (no heating) or too scared of the cost to.

Im not sure how much it would cost for people to put their heating on. I hope people aren't really really cold, too scared to put it in, but if they knew exactly how much it would be, would be able to afford it.

I'm worried they think it'll cost more than it will, especially OAP's that are very very scared of the cost & of getting into debt.

🥲🥲

Stardewbeam · 20/11/2022 20:28

Ours is off but not intentionally, just we’re in the South & it hasn’t been cold enough to click on yet (thermostat set to 18).

I have lit the wood burner the last 2 evenings though as it’s felt a bit chilly.

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 20:30

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 20/11/2022 18:41

Ours is on a timer, and is set to 18° morning and evening (14° overnight and during the day) and has come on a few times, mostly early morning. Our house is v well insulated, so generally doesn't come on in the evening. Obviously that will change when it gets colder!

@Allthegoodusernamesareused

14° at night? Do you not get overly hot at night or do you just have a very light duvet on?

I'm still kicking the covers off at night. It was 11° on the smart meter thingy the other night. I was standing at the back door, far far too hot! Needed to cool right down before trying to sleep again.

A580Hojas · 20/11/2022 20:31

In London. Had it on, on and off for a few weeks/months.

I definitely went on today at 5pm! It's now officially cold. Will turn it off now, the house will stay warm enough until we go to bed at 11.

WhiteFire · 20/11/2022 20:33

Oh no, I feel your pain. Hope you manage ok to Wednesday, at least we have someone coming tomorrow. I'm looking forward to going to work tomorrow, not least because I can wash my hands in hot water.

SkylightSkylight · 20/11/2022 20:34

TruJay · 20/11/2022 18:58

We put ours on beginning of October when we brought our newborn home. Even if we hadn’t‘t have had baby, it was pretty cold that week so we’d have put it on anyway and have been using it since.

@TruJay

Awww congratulations!!!

How's the little one doing? How are YOU doing? First? Tenth?

Typo! 12° over night (and daytime when the kids aren't here). Our heating has never (in 8 years living here) come on over night.

Decafflatteplease · 20/11/2022 19:07

We've just started this week having it on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.. basically when DC are getting up and when they are going to bed. The rest of the time eg when they at school DH and I coping with layers, duvets wrapped round us and hot water bottles.

Basically terrified of the cost as 1 hour this year is equal to 3 hours last year in terms of cost!

@Decafflatteplease

i tell you what's helped me at night, Teddy Bedding! I thought it would feel a bit grim, and be hard to get dry, but Tesco had a sale on so I thought I'd chance it (rest of my bedding is lovely high count cotton 😂🤣😂🤣)

I don't like a heated bed, so no electric blanket etc but getting into teddy bedding is like a warm soft hug! None of that cold sheets nonsense!!

and when you hold it up it's very light, it dries incredibly quickly!!

LovelyBitOfSquirrel69 · 20/11/2022 20:41

Who are all these people who think it's still too warm to have the heating on? It's fucking freezing!

@plinkplinkfizzer

met office days 4° low for us (SE ENG) but thanks for the reminder, I'll leave a bit earlier in the morning, in case I need to defrost windows etc. that few minutes makes all the difference to the volume of traffic!!
