Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

😲😲😲. They’re amazing! May actually look into getting a couple of those…they look sturdy enough that the cats won’t knock them over!

We have two cats, they don’t go anywhere near them, it would take a fair shove to knock them over. Our lounge was 22 degrees with them both on. In fact we got too warm at 9pm and turned them off. I was a bit hmmmm when DH suggested them, but they are a real life saver.

Crackof · 19/11/2022 22:55

We've had some heat in the day, some days, as and when, since about a week ago. As another poster mentioned, without a tumble dryer you need a bit of direct heat sometimes to get clothes dry.

We're also being very robust and wearing good warm clothes and using HWBs day and night etc. I've got an electric blanket too, which my little meter doodad tells me is 22 watts when it's on 1. I think that's pretty cheap.

My living room still hasn't been below 15°, so heat's not a real health necessity yet.

Wineat5isfine · 19/11/2022 22:56

We turned the heating on last week, just for a boost for 2 hours at 4am.

We have a wood burning stove, which in comparison is ridiculously cheap to run - that’s our main heat source.

Els1e · 19/11/2022 22:57

Yep, heating on at times. I am caring for elderly mum who is affected by cold. Also we did planning and overpaid since last March, to get us through. However, not sure if we’ve done enough.

Quackpot · 19/11/2022 22:59

If you don't start heating your house your gonna get damp

sarahc336 · 19/11/2022 23:00

You wear gloves in bed? Surely that's a sign your heating should be on 😬 ours has been on for weeks for a little while in the morning first thing and in the evening. Only difference now is I refuse to have it on on the day time so we've reduced our usage that way but I won't be so cold as to need globes inside for no one

Legallypinkish · 19/11/2022 23:02

Just put it on last night and it’s been on most of the day but very low. We are south coast and it’s been the first time it’s been cold enough.

Champagneforeveryone · 19/11/2022 23:02

Ours is on, but we live in a new build with a super duper heating system.

So far I've noticed the radiators have been on, but never actually happened upon them actually on. It appears they are only on for short bursts and in different zones as and when required.

DH and DDog2 would likely leave home if I insisted the heating was turned off 🙄

ObjectionSustained · 19/11/2022 23:03

Mines been on and off at between 21 and 24 degrees for weeks now. My bones cannot do cold, it exacerbates my conditions greatly.

Even so, if you're in bed wearing gloves it sounds like it's time. That's crazy to me!

Comedycook · 19/11/2022 23:03

We've put it on a few times in the evening but only for half an hour. We could have managed without it but we just wanted to take the chill off. It hasn't felt very cold yet at all.

OzziePopPop · 19/11/2022 23:05

We’re in the southwest, I’ve only just shut the big windows this morning , the little one is still open. Luckily really as I’m disabled and broke 😂

Maryqueenofscotland · 19/11/2022 23:07

London based here and it's 3 degrees outside at the moment. I've been holding out but don't want a damp mouldy house so have been putting central heating on for an hour or so each evening over the past week or so.

Hereweare12111 · 19/11/2022 23:07

My house is still 18-20 degrees I haven’t had my heating above 15 degrees. It feels warm in here , must be because it’s a new build.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 19/11/2022 23:07

Haven't put ours on yet, thermostat says it's currently 16.5oc. I've been out all day and DP is away this weekend. I've just got in bed with a hot water bottle and long sleeved pyjamas on, feels nice and cosy.

We will turn it on before it's a case of wearing gloves in bed though!

LaurieFairyCake · 19/11/2022 23:08

Yes, loads of times - London

RaininSummer · 19/11/2022 23:11

Mine was on for the first time today as house was 14 degrees and the cold woke me as my joints were hurting.

RoseMartha · 19/11/2022 23:13

So far I have the heat on for 30 mins twice a day to take the chill off. Started that this week.Thermostat is set for 18. Lucky in the fact I have a middle flat and so it stays fairly ok. I am prepared to up it to an hour in the morning and an hour in evening.

(Last year we had the heat on for a max of 4 hours a day, so attempting to halve this).

In addition to layering clothes, I use a hot water bottle and blankets if cold during the day especially when wfh, and hot water bottle at night. I will use a blanket on the duvet as well if I need to. My teens have thin fleece blankets on top of their duvets, they haven't resorted to their weighted blankets yet.

GrubzUp · 19/11/2022 23:17

Mine has been rationed to a couple of hours a day, since about a week ago. The house was feeling (and smelling) rather damp, washing was taking several days to dry and we've got decorators in: wet plaster and steam strippers haven't helped the humidity levels indoors.

WishingWell5 · 19/11/2022 23:20

If you aren't putting the heating on at all, are you not suffering with mould?

DelphiniumBlue · 19/11/2022 23:23

I put it on from 6.30-11pm a few nights ago. Energy meter says that cost about a tenner so I won't be doing that again unless the temperature drops substantially.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 19/11/2022 23:31

WishingWell5 · 19/11/2022 23:20

No. I lived in a house with mould years ago. Mould is caused by poor ventilation, not just it being cold on it's own.

We open the windows for at least 10 minutes every day, use a karcher vacuum thing for the windows, and keep the bathroom door closed with the extractor fan on after a shower etc.

Nonimai · 19/11/2022 23:32

I was going to hold out til December, but the house has started to smell really damp and musty.

Bathbomb99 · 19/11/2022 23:34

Not on here yet, can’t afford it so we use our electric blankets and throws.

Schlaar · 19/11/2022 23:34

My house has dropped as low as 12c overnight recently. I study from home and I can’t function if it’s too cold. You can’t concentrate if you’re freezing and your nose is dropping off!

I’ve been putting the heating on for 1hr at 9am to take the chill off during the day. Then I put it on for 1hr when the kids come in from school to take the chill off for the evening. We’ve started going to bed early to get under the duvet because by about 8pm the temperature has dropped to 16c and we can’t afford to put the heating on again.

We are still cold. We wear dressing gowns and hats all the time and use blankets. Our house would normally be about 20c but we can’t afford that now.

plinkplinkfizzer · 19/11/2022 23:37

My home has vents at the top of the windows ,and it's a big house only four of us and we open a window after a shower so no no damp problems .
