Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

Just for an hour in the morning and maybe 30 mins in the eve to take the edge off.

However, the washing isn't drying and the mould/damp we've always had a bit of is noticeably worse, so we are running dehumidifier constantly instead.

We turned the heating on last week, just for a boost for 2 hours at 4am.

We have a wood burning stove, which in comparison is ridiculously cheap to run - that’s our main heat source.

We also have a wood burning stove, which we can’t use because of the kids. We risked it a couple of weeks ago because we were desperately cold and couldn’t afford to use the central heating. On the third night our youngest was rushed to A&E with burns from touching the stove. Wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for these fucking ridiculous energy prices forcing us to make unsafe choices.

Lovetok · 19/11/2022 23:50

We’ve tried not to. We have hot water bottles for bedtime and a heated blanket I bought for DH last Christmas as he wfh mostly. But I’ve had to put it in a couple of times to help dry washing and towels. It’s miserable though. Takes me so long to warm up. I work in a school as well and they’re only putting the heating in in the morning so by hometime it’s freezing.

IncessantNameChanger · 19/11/2022 23:57

Ours went on when the temp dropped below 14 but now it's not heating the radiators up 🥶 more expense that we can't afford to get the heating fixed but our boiler is a 2008 modle. God knows what we will do. It worked two weeks ago!

We are thinking of getting a oil filled radiator. I think they are cheaper to run?

@IncessantNameChanger gas heating is much cheaper than electric. I have no idea why so many people think that using an electric heater is cheaper. If you have a look at the price of your gas you will see the difference.

No heating here. But then again we have no radiators because we are in the middle of a house renovation. I won’t lie and say it’s not been cold - it’s been bloody freezing. Not helped by no roof and the builder leaving the front door wide open whenever he is here (which isn’t often 😕) We are living here miserably with nothing but hot water bottles and many many layers of clothing. I’m about to go to bed and I can’t say I’m looking forward to snuggling under the duvet because it feels damp and soggy 🥶
Looking on the bright side we don’t have to worry about heating bills 😋

NeedAHoliday2021 · 20/11/2022 00:08

Sporadically. I think it’s been on 4 times this winter. Dh put it on yesterday as he works from home and cracked. It’s usually me and on on 1 October! Dh actually apologised for putting it on! It’s not been on today and house is 17 degrees which feels too cold to me. I’m wearing layers and have a fleece blanket. I think it needs to move to timed but usually I have it on 22 so I’ll try 19 to start. Not sure I can live like that though!

Readaboutyourself · 20/11/2022 00:11

We pop it on for a few hours when it’s very cold but once we get Hive it’ll run off the thermostat. Probably set to 17.5 as the house generally holds heat well, OH runs hot & I have a lot of knitwear 😄

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/11/2022 00:12

It’s been coming on in the morning, and then as and when needed for short bursts. We’ve just discovered the joy of electric blankets etc.

I think need to start a timed burst in the evenings too because it has been getting cold.

ALongHardWinter · 20/11/2022 00:14

Hell yes! It's been 12 degrees in my flat without any heating on.

nobird · 20/11/2022 00:15

It’s been on a few times - an hour in the morning or so, and maybe early evening for the same, just to take the chill off. Thermostat set to 18. Not used it everyday though.

DixonD · 20/11/2022 00:15

It’s been on this week for the first time this autumn but only because I have coronavirus. We have a lot burner too and have been using that for a few weeks now.

Grooo · 20/11/2022 00:16

Been on for at least an hour in the morning for the last 2 months.

notacooldad · 20/11/2022 00:18

No.
It's not cold yet.

Seasider2017 · 20/11/2022 00:18

my heating is set at 21 and stays on that from 7.45 till 22.00 everyday. So if the temp drop below 21 it will switch the boiler on to reach 21* again.
it’s been like that since September

78Summer · 20/11/2022 00:19

Tonight for the first time as was chilly and to dry the washing.

Asthenia · 20/11/2022 04:43

We have put it on from 6-7pm every evening since last week so the house is a bit warmer for when the baby comes out of her bath and we get her ready for bed. I worry about her getting cold! If we didn’t have her then we wouldn’t have put it on yet.

CeeJay81 · 20/11/2022 06:22

Just this last few days for an hour in the evening. Yesterday morning it was frosty, about 3 degrees at 7am, so put it on for an hour then too. Thankfully it's not so cold this morning, so will just stick to the hour in the evening unless it's very cold.

JackTorrance · 20/11/2022 06:34

@IncessantNameChanger The most likely reason for that is that your boiler has lost pressure. If you take a note of the make you can look on youtube and there will probably be a video showing you how to repressive it.
It happened to mine last week and was easy enough, just needed to turn two screws with a screwdriver till it filled back up over a minute or two then close them again.

Your boiler will have a pressure gauge, if you check it and its on zero there's your answer.

JackTorrance · 20/11/2022 06:35

*Repressure not repressive.

BiasedBinding · 20/11/2022 06:40

I do find the “no” answers which then casually mention log burners quite funny

user1483387154 · 20/11/2022 06:43

no heating on, -1 degrees outside but my flat is a toasty 20 degrees still. I will probably put it on for about 2 weeks total this year. Very lucky situation to be in.

Charlize43 · 20/11/2022 07:10

PickAChew · 19/11/2022 22:47

Of course it fucking is. It's been cold and wet all week and the mould is appearing.

Yes, I've had mould appearing in some places, around windows, etc.

Distilled vinegar (ASDA 29p) is absolutely brilliant at killing off the mould fungus and is supposedly more effective than bleach. Definitely recommend it.

lobsterkiller · 20/11/2022 08:00

Since the start of November and only short bursts. I live in a poorly insulated house, I've done as much as I can but the walls are solid so cant have the benefits of wall insulation. In the spring I'm going to tackle the ground floor to insulate as part of the ongoing renovations I'm doing.

I've also got a log burner, great at drying clothes instead of using the tumble dryer. I only need to use 4/5 logs a night to get the downstairs to 23c.

I usually put the heating on in the morning to take the edge off. It feels toasty warm having it set to 17c so it seems some of the work I've had done is paying off.

Singleandproud · 20/11/2022 08:01

@IncessantNameChanger Have you bled your radiators? Trapped air prevents radiators from heating properly. Also check the temperature valves on each radiator aren't turned right down.

I bleed the radiators every Autumn before starting to use the heating to remove any air caught in the system. Then you repressurise the boiler which is very easy, on mine you just turn two dials underneath and wait about 30s for the pressure dial to move back into the green and job done.
