Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

Ours is off, but we're in the south east so it hasn't really been that cold yet.

Same. I did put it on briefly a few mornings this week mostly to make sure it still works and te ward off damp, rather than because we're cold.

House is currently 16° downstairs and 17° upstairs. We all have blankets on the sofa anyway and wear dressing gowns indoors. I don't tend to turn heating on until I'm getting cold hands/nose or if it feels too cold for baths/showers.

YukoandHiro · 19/11/2022 22:02

Yes, this last week it's on every AM and PM for a few hours.

NewBootsAndRanty · 19/11/2022 22:04

I'm going to try stick to the WHO recommendations of 18-21° instead of braving it out, I don't fancy messing around with COPD (only diagnosed this year).

NoodieRoodie · 19/11/2022 22:01

Also Yorkshire dales and not even considering it yet. It's been a bit chilly this evening but we've wrapped ourselves in fleecy blankets. We've still got the 4 tog duvet on (with patchwork quilt over the top) and am plenty warm enough

Yasss! We’ve not levelled up our duvet yet either, but have blankets on the bed. And two cats. Glad there’s another northerner holding out 😁.

We haven't yet. Thermostat tells us it has been 16 in some areas, but it hasn't fee too cold apart from when I'm home alone during the day. Currently wearing an oodie with my feet up in front of the log burner though.

RampantIvy · 19/11/2022 22:04

Yes

cavily1806 · 19/11/2022 22:05

I've put it on twice to warm the house to bath the toddler. Not on as standard yet

BiasedBinding · 19/11/2022 22:05

Yes, for an hour or so a day for a couple of weeks now, thermostat set to 17. I’m in rural SE England, it’s pretty chilly here.

Definitely not, @NewBootsAndRanty - got to look after yourself and COPD is no joke. Stay toasty!

I have a thermostat and a time, I'm set to 17.5 and that's fine if I dress reasonably warmly. I'm in Eastern England so it's still relatively mild - heating kicks in first thing in the morning and then intermittently through the day but very briefly.

Butchyrestingface · 19/11/2022 22:06

I switched it on this week for the first time. It's been on for a couple of hours at night in the living room only, to warm up the room for my pets in time for them going to bed. I don't care about myself, I can put on a jumper or get under a heated throw. <sad sack animal mother alert>

BuddhaAtSea · 19/11/2022 22:08

I am worried about mould, really, more than anything, if it’s dry outside I don’t need to put it on. But it’s been raining heavily here, so I make sure I open the windows for a bit before going to work and putting the heating on for an hour or so in the evening.
It’s gone down to 3 degrees at night, 10 in the day here.
My thermostat is showing 19 degrees, it’s an EPC B, super insulated, I don’t normally need the heating on more than that anyway.
Hope you’re all cosy and warm wherever you are.

Natfrances · 19/11/2022 22:08

Yes, it has been on for the last 6 weeks. Its set at 21.5

musicforthesoul · 19/11/2022 22:08

Still off but I'm in a well insulated flat in the south east.

It'll be on well before we get to the gloves in bed stage!

DelilahBucket · 19/11/2022 22:09

Yes for a couple of months. It's set at 17.5-19 depending on the time of day and comes on when it drops below. It's not been on anywhere as often as last year and it's set a lot cooler this year. I feel the cold so I've got a hot water bottle most evenings and we share a blanket on the sofa.

Ha @Butchyrestingface! Yes, we are going to be doing the same for our cats too. We can front it, but would run the heating 24/7 to keep the kitties snuggly and warm. The threshold is 14 degrees for them…as soon as we reach that, the heating will be going right on!

We are lucky enough to be able to afford it and I don't want condensation damp in my house if I can avoid it (did that last year when I discovered the baby slept best in 16 degrees and turned off the radiator in the bedroom, lesson learned!) so we have it set to be on for one hour in the morning and one in the evening if it drops below twenty in the house - wasn't clicking on last week but the last few days it has

PaperMonster · 19/11/2022 22:15

Not far from the Dales and we’ve not put it on yet. Not actually too cold and if we do sit and watch TV we use a heated throw. Got the electric blanket on in bed though!

GettinHyggeWithIt · 19/11/2022 22:16

We have a log burner which between that and the oven in the kitchen heats downstairs.

I’ve topped up with 1 hr of central heating a couple of days as I’m fine in bed but was finding upstairs and in the bathrooms feeling damp. Doors have swollen I think. I have a smart metre and really aware of how much we’re using despite having a big credit as who knows how cold it will get and what happens next year.

WimbyAce · 19/11/2022 22:18

I caved yesterday as it turned pretty chilly. I was feeling cold even with my furry jumper on so thought we needed it to take the edge off. No going back now!

DWMoosmum · 19/11/2022 22:19

Our thermostat is set to come on at 13 degrees. You would be really surprised at how much just that low temp heats the house. We have bi folds right across the house with a glass ceiling light so it gets quite cold and that temp just takes the edge off. Not only too scared to have it on any higher but so far it really doesn't need it.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 19/11/2022 22:19

Not yet. But in the warm south in a well insulated house. A couple of times I’ve come downstairs and thought it’s a bit chilly, but looked at the thermostat and it’s not been below 18.5 degrees. 17 degrees is my cut off point.

Although the bathroom towel rails come on when we put the hot water on, and I’ve had the heated airer on too.

Dunnoburt · 19/11/2022 22:20

In bed.....Still got my summer fan on🙈......absolutely no heating yet.....especially as doing 3 loads of washing and 1 load of tumble drying has cost £8 (rounded down) today 😑

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/11/2022 22:20

In Jersey. Its still quite warm but the heating has been on and off all day. Its off at the moment and nearly 20 in the kitchen.

During the day its been about 13.

Will prob wear socks in bed, and then shed them in the middle of the night!

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/11/2022 22:20

Mine has been on for a few months now.
