Is your heating on yet?

It’s Saturday night, I’m bored so I thought a quick poll would be fun.

We’ve still not put our heating on yet this year. We’ve got gloves, thick fuzzy blankets and socks on in bed. I’m not sure why.

I think my other half asked whether we should put the heating on in mid-September and my response was, “Well, I’m plenty warm still but if you’re cold, then just put it on.”

Now we’re stuck in some sort of detente, in the Yorkshire Dales, where neither of us wants to be the first one that breaks. 😂

How about you guys? Toasty warm with the heating on or styling it out with Snuggies and hot chocolate?

YABU - We’re sane. The heating is on.
YANBU - WE are the gods of winter! Heating off.

I've decided to stop worrying about my heating bill and live in mildly frugal comfort. It's set to go on for 30 mins in the morning and 2.5 hours at night, if it only gets below 13.5C and only til it reaches 19.5C. So far, so warm. Remind me of my excess in April when I'm no longer in credit with my energy supplier, I suppose.

GettinHyggeWithIt · 19/11/2022 22:21

The other thing I’ve really noticed is getting washing dry. We had such a lovely summer here and live in a part of the country that doesn’t seem to rain often so I always line dry and finish off on a heated rack. I do have a tumble dryer but rarely use it. Such a hassle to dry anything now and with all the wet weather this week.

Oblomov22 · 19/11/2022 22:21

Ours has only come on once so far. Its been very mild in Surrey. It is set to 19, day time only, and it hasn't been that cold. Its only come on once so far.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 19/11/2022 22:21

The thermostat is set to 19 degrees in the day and 15 degrees overnight so it just clicks on as and when it needs to.

However, we've both been unwell this week and feverish so it's been on 22 degrees.

We're up north and it's been quite chilly.

Spectre8 · 19/11/2022 22:22

Only 1hr every other day so far as the evening its too cold in the house. I'm budgeting to spend £5 a day on elec and gas as a max if I can. At the moment I'm under that so I have some spare money for when its truly freezing cold. Back to the office full-time from next week so I dont have to heat my home during the day time..with no payrise and taxes, council tax set to go up no more working from home

Multipleexclamationmarks · 19/11/2022 22:25

I've been putting it on for an hour set to 16 degrees around 6pm. It's taking the chill off. Without it, the house is around 14 degrees.

GlumShoe · 19/11/2022 22:25

I am loathe to put it on, especially as we're ok with a jumper and fluffy socks but the front wall is getting damp spots. As of tonight, it's on for a couple of hours in the morning and an hour at night.
We're in the North and it has been 14 degrees downstairs a few times, so in the interest of not having a wet wall, it's going on.

VestaTilley · 19/11/2022 22:27

Ours went on today.

We’ve been holding out til now thanks to thermals and unusually warm weather, but DS woke up a bit cold this morning after his covers came off in the night, so on it goes. We’re fortunate to be able to afford it.

Will just do an hour in the morning and an hour and a half at bedtime.

Stripedbag101 · 19/11/2022 22:34

There was ice on my car this morning and the house was 11 degrees when I woke up which is just too cold so the heating went on for the first time.

I do know some people who leave their on constantly with the thermostat set to say 21 degrees. Tabard not me. The house was so cold that I put it on for an hour or so today - I flicked it off when the room hit 15.

tonight I have a fire going which is lovely and warm. With the price of coal I haven’t worked out if that is cheaper. But it is certainly nicer than central heating

newusernamegloria · 19/11/2022 22:35

I live in Alaska. It's a nice cold -10 degrees here today, so I'm going to throw off your poll 😁
Heats been on for ages. I know it's a UK based site but there's people on here living all over! I'm from the UK 😁

ShortKipper · 19/11/2022 22:35

No. 12.5 degrees in the bedroom now, but we have started wearing pyjamas and are fine.

It's become a bit of a challenge now. Our house was built in 1450 and so for the majority of its history people must have managed without. We do have a log burner in the living room.

Wiluli · 19/11/2022 22:36

I’ve had individual electric ones for weeks ( north Scotland ) I’ve turned in central heating today for the first time

LaughingCat · 19/11/2022 22:36

From a lot of the replies on here, I’m very glad I live in a ten-yr old, energy efficient semi. All of our windows have those vents that stop condensation, so we don’t have to worry about damp either.

Just about to move into a non-energy efficient century-old detached house, with virtually no insulation and rising damp in every room downstairs…which is one of the reasons we’re holding out here - we don’t know how much it’s going to cost to run the heating there and are trying to save what we can in case it’s a small fortune.

Utterly rubbish how many are either rationing energy due to the finances or feeling almost rebellious about staying warm.

I've got storage heaters and I've turned them on in two rooms so far. They're fancy new ones installed by the landlord and I can regulate the temperature on them and set times for them to come on. We barely crack 18 most days. I've no doubt winter will fuck that right up however.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/11/2022 22:39

We haven’t. We’ve bought oodies (from Asda). However, we are heating our sitting room with two fabulous (albeit ugly) oil lamps that were my MIL’s from the 60’s/70s. They create a lovely glow and the room has been so warm tonight I was sat in just my pyjamas. They give out an amazing warmth. We’ve costed it as about £5 a week for the oil.

ShakespearesSisters · 19/11/2022 22:40

Our thermostat in the hall hasn't dropped below 15°yet. (Was 3° outside this morning) We have used the log burner a couple of times in the last month. But more for cosiness than heat. Luckily the kids run hot, I'm menopausal and husband is happy if he is saving money on heating 🤣

Jellykat · 19/11/2022 22:40

No, ive no central heating, we're not on mains gas here.. but i cant be arsed to light the woodburner when i get back from work yet..
I'm in West Wales so not cold as such but quite damp, i have had the dehumidifier on twice.

Badnewsoracle · 19/11/2022 22:41

We had ours on yesterday evening and this morning, but only because my mum was here and she's really bad in the cold (her house is like a sauna). Otherwise we're keeping it off until absolutely necessary. Thankfully not found it unbearable yet. Thermostats are currently set at 8 degrees, so the pipes don't freeze, and it's not come on yet. We never have it on overnight either.

They look very similar to this.

Charlize43 · 19/11/2022 22:46

I put it on today for the first time as it felt colder than usual. I've set the thermostat to 17 so it will come on if it falls below that.

Of course it fucking is. It's been cold and wet all week and the mould is appearing.

😲😲😲. They’re amazing! May actually look into getting a couple of those…they look sturdy enough that the cats won’t knock them over!

Yep - I'm in the SW and best warm the ambient temp inside, there isn't much sun that can reach my house this time of year and the temp has dropped.

And what a treat it is - you don't realize how cold you are until you're warmer.
