4 fish fingers aren't equivalent to one portion of fish-have you ever pulled out the fish to eat by itself, then refill the empty breadcrumb casing with ketchup? Gorgeous!!

Fishfingers , chips and beans are reportedly Tyson Fury’s favourite meal . I wonder how many he has??!

The grandchildren used to ask for an 'orange tea' if they were eating here, fish fingers, chips and beans!

Well it may have something to fo with many other things but fish fingers are really not the cause of obesity😂

Haha exactly. 8 fish fingers over here and my BMI is 19.

BosaNova · 19/11/2022 13:50

I just did some googling and standard school lunch portion in my native country seems to be 5 and side of mash.

Tbh I am now not surprised people mention 3 or 4 with all the sides everyone is having with it in uk

DD 15:four
DS 13: four
DH : five or six
Me: at least 6 (didn't ask the buttie question, as they would all recoil in horror, except eldest son)

I must be psychic as I knew the words Obesity Crisis would come up.

ScrabbleChamp64 · 19/11/2022 14:07

4 fits pretty perfectly in a sandwich!

@Florenz

It's no wonder there is an obesity epidemic in this country. People have lost sight of what an appropriate portion size is. 4 fish fingers is enough for anyone. Less than 4 if they are the larger fingers.

Absolutely 100% agree with this. I can hardly believe what I am seeing on this thread. I don't know ANYONE who eats as much in one sitting as some of the posters here claim to eat. If that is a typical portion -10 to 12 fish fingers, and they think 10-15 chips is a paltry amount, then yeah, IDGAF if it's a cliché on here, no WONDER we have an obesity crisis. The amount some people claim to eat on here (in one sitting,) is grim.

Some portions that some posters are suggesting they or their partner eat - 10-12 fish fingers, half a kilo of chips, a whole tin of baked beans, and 3 or 4 slices of bread and butter, would have been enough for 2 adults and one child some 30+ years ago. (Still would be in some families, including mine.) Yes we HAVE lost sight of what a normal portion is.

No fucking WAY is 10-12 fish fingers a normal amount to eat in one sitting, with the mountain of chips, 3 or 4 slices of bread and butter, and a tin of beans. OMG I feel sorry for their hearts and their joints and their arteries! Shock

BosaNova · 19/11/2022 14:11

I am like proper into it😂
Pic 2 is what seems to be average uk serving of fishfingers and sides based on instagram (usually 3 -4 fingers, sometimes added slice of bread). Pic 1 is nicked of some random primary in my native country. At home you would have less mash and more fingers.

I can quite see why people eat less fingers here.

But then you have to ask.
Am I having fish fingers and sides for dinner or sides and fish fingers?😂

What’s an adult size portion of fish fingers??

BosaNova · 19/11/2022 14:13

Note, the mash is spread, the layer in the middle is like 2mm😂

whatapity · 19/11/2022 14:14

That's far too much mashed potato. Though I have a dislike of mashed potatoes generally, so that might just be me.

Like I said. 8 fish fingers here. BMI 19. I’m also a competitive athlete so definitely healthy too :)

I don’t think having a couple of extra fish fingers is the reason we have an obesity crisis. There’s literally 70 calories in a fish finger- even 10 of them is only 700 calories. If you have that with veggies as a side, that’s quite a low calorie dinner, especially when some people would claim fish fingers is extremely unhealthy yet their dinner of pasta, cheese, pizza etc probably has more calories!

I can make healthy salad with more calories easily

It's school canteen on budget spreading mash looking like it's way more than it is😁 the all did it! Sometimes you got veg instead of part of it.
They did the same with tice. Just spread it around

zingally · 19/11/2022 14:59

Dp has a 32 inch waist, he's no longer the prime athlete, however comparatively he's pretty bloody healthy. I'm still a size 10.

But the likelihood is surely that you can eat - indeed need to eat - quite a lot because you are a competitive athlete. You may well find that as you get older and when you stop competing that it's not quite the same. Someone I know has recently retired from a professional dance career and has piled weight on since then, as she hasn't reduced her food intake enough to account for the fact that she is no longer doing strenous exercise for many hours every day. When I was young I could eat anything I fancied and I stayed stick thin. Unfortunately these days that's not the case, despite the fact I still do quite a lot of exercise. 700 calories would definitely not be a low calorie meal for me.
The reasons for the obesity crisis are complex of course, and there's no easy solution, but portion sizes are without doubt a factor. I grew up in the 70s and I wouldn't say we had a particularly healthy diet then in terms of the types and varieties of food available, but I'm sure people ate less. I remember going on holiday to the USA in the early 80s and being absolutely astounded by the portion sizes in hotels and restaurants, but I don't think there is that much difference between US and UK portions nowadays.
Of course eating more than an average number of fish fingers isn't going to make someone obese, any more than having a full can of soup is, as was discussed on another thread recently. Not if that's an isolated thing anyway. But generally it isn't. People are eating bigger portions of everything. The trend for increased portion sizes isn't the sole reason for the trend for increased body weight, but we don't do ourselves any favours if we deny that it plays a role.

BosaNova · 19/11/2022 15:40

700 cal is generally a normal dinner. Unless of course we are on MN where literally everyone with extreme metabolism issues concentrates....
Soz(but yeah, 700 isn't low cal. Have to agree there though. Low cal would be 400)

Babysitter12 · 19/11/2022 15:42

5 to 6 for an adult,

Ocampa · 19/11/2022 16:58

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/11/2022 18:19

Bloody hell, I would have said two was enough!

Oh no, that really is overeating! I couldn't eat more than a crumb! Not even that if I've already eaten that day like a slice of apple or sniffed at a cucumber.

Ocampa · 19/11/2022 17:03

I've just looked it up, there are about 70 calories in a fish finger. So an adult that eats 2 fishfingers (140 cal) on a slice of bread (100 cal-ish) with some margerine, tomato and cucumber (another 60 cal if I'm being extremely generous) will have a meal worth of 300 calories. That's not enough to be a meal.

2 fish fingers ! 4 in a sandwich, but if you're careful 5 can fit very nicely Smile

Totally wrong! The fifth is to have on the side of the plate!

I beg to differ. My loaf from the bread maker accommodates five with ease. This sandwich was actually my dinner on the first night this thread was running. And that’s extra light mayonnaise.

What’s an adult size portion of fish fingers??
lljkk · 19/11/2022 19:32

Ahem.

I am just thinking I don't like fish fingers enough to want more than 4 in one sitting. If you want that much fish, why not have a proper big piece of battered fish like an adult ?
