Does anyone who is addicted to the fizzy juice worry about the risks of cancer as a result? I have no idea why I think this, but it's become a bit of a thing for me now and I can't stop thinking about it Shock

is there a link? I hope not, I drink 2 cans a day 😱 I wasn’t aware there was a link to cancer

AndyWarholsPiehole · 16/11/2022 20:37

What's the point of worrying about that when we're all breathing polluted poisoned air?

Everything gives you cancer if you read the right articles.

monsteronahill · 16/11/2022 20:38

To consume enough artificial sweetener in a day to be over your daily allowance and at risk of illness (not cancer!) I think it's over 10 cans a day. There's no official cancer links (as far as I know) that the EFSA have credited for artificial sweeteners.

There are some scare mongering articles linking aspartame to cancer. From what I can see, all false. But it still creeps me out

Nope. Sugar is pretty bad for your health too.

Purplelion · 16/11/2022 20:39

I drink about 6 cans of Coke Zero a day so I hope not

Thanks for this. I feel a bit better about my Diet Coke addiction now!

Kikidouloveme · 16/11/2022 20:39

Even things like your bedding, furniture, toothpaste and skin products, the air like a pp said gives you cancer. Inorganic food, too much salt, fat, STRESS, sedentary lifestyle all day on MN. Everything!

nickytjj · 16/11/2022 20:40

There is a link because fizzy drinks are linked to oesophagus cancer. Aspartame in diet drinks has long being thought to be cancerous, it messes with the metabolism so you can add body fat which increases estrogen and increases chance of breast cancer.

Having said that though I think many foods we consume are cancerous and it is rather fruitless to try and eliminate them as the list is so overwhelming. 2 cans a day isn't great by any means, could you cut down?

nickytjj · 16/11/2022 20:41

yea but the sweeteners they put in to replace it aren't good either.

WindyKnickers · 16/11/2022 20:41

There are so many things in every day life that could cause cancer or other horrible illnesses. I wouldn't loose much sleep over a mild diet coke habit.

MadameDe · 16/11/2022 20:41

It has a lot of phosphate in it which binds to calcium and prevents it from being absorbed into your bones. It should really be a treat.

Jaybird43 · 16/11/2022 20:42

@twinkleto i was addicted to Diet Coke - what really got me to stop was the fact that I couldn’t get through the day without one. My skin looked bad and I just felt “meh”. There is a lot of aspartame in diet sodas, which some sources claim is worse for you than sugar. I used to get a lot of stomach issues too; bloating, pains and general upset. Since being Diet Coke free, I feel much better!

It's much more than ten cans a day.

Yummymummy2020 · 16/11/2022 20:44

i think the amount you would need is Even greater than the amount you could consume in cans to be dodgy cancer wise, from memory a lot of research was on mice and the doses so huge that you couldn’t consume the same as a human through diet even if you tried. I don’t think you need to worry, but I know there is a ton of decent research that showed it as safe!

The study that prompted the scaremongering was done on rats. The conclusion was that, for humans, the equivalent of a thousand cans a day still didn't lead to an increased chance of tumours. If you're drinking that much, you have other worries.

Vallmo47 · 16/11/2022 20:47

I understand OP, I probably drink about 3 litres a day, true addict here. I think anything, absolutely anything, you have an abnormal relationship with/can’t do without, could cause health risks. But in the spirit of a true addict I can’t give it up.

Pinkblanket · 16/11/2022 20:47

Nope, I honestly don't. I'm totally addicted to Pepsi Max. It's literally my only vice. You will have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.

Kindofcrunchy · 16/11/2022 20:49

Pepsi max is worth the cancer imo.

WonderingWanda · 16/11/2022 20:52

Not really the point of the thread but how are you all drinking these diet drinks? Fake sugar tastes revolting to me, so artificially sweet and a weird after taste. I don't drink fizzy drinks often enough to care about the sugar content but I have a hard time finding any that don't contain that horrible taste these days. I would rather drink water. I have no idea if it it's actually bad for you but remain convinced that something which tastes that grim must be bad for you.

Onewildandpreciouslife · 16/11/2022 21:12

We consume plenty of known carcinogens - I wouldn’t worry about the ones that are vague possibilities

UneFoisAuChalet · 16/11/2022 21:21

I don’t know about cancer but I know two people close to me who have suffered with ‘coke’ addiction. One suffered so much when he came off the stuff. Burning pee, delirium, sweats, headaches, insomnia etc.. it really freaked me out. He was drinking 4 litres of the crap everyday and it was like an episode of Dopesick when he stopped.

Based on that I never drink the stuff. Maybe in a vodka twice a year or a few sips when I het a McDonald’s for the kids. It’s bloody poison!

RunLolaRun102 · 16/11/2022 21:23

I wonder who their base sample was. Because diabetics stay away from sugar to reduce their already increased Cancer risk.
