Diet Coke & cancer

Does anyone who is addicted to the fizzy juice worry about the risks of cancer as a result? I have no idea why I think this, but it's become a bit of a thing for me now and I can't stop thinking about it Shock

I always have to point this out but alcohol is almost as carcinogenic as asbestos but no one ever seems to worry about drinking alcohol! I’d not worry too much about DC.

Yup. I love people who drink a bottle of wine a night telling me about how I'm rotting my insides with Pepsi Max. Let's see whose liver is rotting shall we?

Also can't believe that this has made it to Page 2 without some snobby remark about fizzy juice.

I love Diet Coke and drink far too much, although I am trying to cut down. I drink the caffeine free version, so don't need to worry about too much caffeine.

I am interested in the link with obesity. I am really overweight. I would be interested to find out if the people on this thread who say they drink a lot of diet drinks every day are overweight. Is anyone willing to share?

To lose weight you need a calorie deficit.
Diet Coke is zero or 1 calories per can. It’s not the Diet Coke making you overweight.

Sugar is pretty bad for your health too

yea but the sweeteners they put in to replace it aren't good either.

Exactly, sweeteners are just as bad, they cause just as many insulin spikes

The main risk from diet coke is diabetes, not cancer

This is not true - obesity is caused by insulin, diet coke triggers massive insulin spikes, so yes, diet coke contributes to obesity.

Any artificial sweetener triggers insulin - because it tastes sweet, and so the body responds as if you have eaten sugar

Hi, I drink at least 1litre a day and am a size 8, I have drunk fizzy pop all my life and have been this size for 20 years.

hugznotdrugz · 17/11/2022 08:45

What isn't linked to cancer these days?

KimberleyClark · 17/11/2022 08:46

I never drink Coke or any other fizzy drink or squash. They all taste horrible now they aren’t’t allowed to have sugar in them anyway.

DrManhattan · 17/11/2022 08:46

You ABU for drinking diet coke when Pepsi Max exists.
I've kicked the habit a couple of times but it's just soooo good.

I drink 3 cans of Diet Coke a day. Far from obese.

Summerishere123 · 17/11/2022 08:53

I have found my people! And suddenly feel better about my 2-3 cans a day.
I do need to drink more water though. I don't drink tea and coffee so I justify it that way. Never really worried about cancer but have worried in general.

SlashBeef · 17/11/2022 08:55

Isn't it the statistic that 1 in 2 will now get cancer? I kinda give up as it feels inevitable with pollution, stress, chemicals.. Just gonna live and try not to think about it.

Allergictoironing · 17/11/2022 08:59

I'm not sure either way about the cancer risks, but in my case Aspartame causes bloating, violent stomach cramps, diarrhea, severe headaches, and joint and muscle aches.

Anything sweet I need to check the ingredients carefully to avoid this - it's shocking how many non-diet drinks contain aspartame these days e.g. Tango, all "own brand" fizzy drinks, Lilt. Many low fat foods e.g. yoghurts & desserts contain it as well.

um, NO!

one in two will get cancer in UK

Because the vast majority of us don't die of infected wounds, of malnutrition, of asthma, of failures in fire safety, of poor work place practices, of badly wired homes, of carbon monoxide, of measles, of cholera, of malaria, of any other infectious or contagious disease, of violence in or out of the home, at birth or in childbirth,

Because we are rich and safe, and live in a safe society were we are well looked after and well provided for

Most people in such societies will live long enough to die from a non-communicable disease, eg diabetes, heart disease, cancer

Because life is good, and we are incredibly privileged

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 17/11/2022 09:05

Meh.

Everything is bad for you if you read the right articles. As a chronic pain sufferer it doesn't matter if I live on oat milk and kale or bacon sandwiches and Pepsi max, I'm going to feel like shite. Might as well at least have enjoyable food.

Hmm, not quite true.

Yes, Diet Coke doesn't contain any calories so you won't directly gain weight from it - but it does have a lot of artificial sweeteners. When you consume them, your body reacts in the same way it does when you've had a lot of sugar - in other words, insulin spikes, which are linked to obesity and diabetes.

completely true-

This cant be stated enough

We have a massive obesity epidemic, and a diabetes crisis

Personally devastating, and financially crippling for the NHS

Yet people have no understanding of how scientific knowledge on the causes of obesity and diabetes have advanced so much in the last few decades

Cut down highly processed food( including white wheat based products)! sugar and artificial sweeteners! Veg oil and margarine!

These are the most important things you can do for yourself and your children

WilsonMilson · 17/11/2022 09:14

I used to love Diet Coke, but I gave it up a couple of years ago as it was causing me to feel dizzy - bizarre I know, but as soon as I stopped (I had about 2 cans a day), the dizziness went away. So glad I gave it up, it doesn’t even taste that nice to me now, too sweet.

RestingMurderousFace · 17/11/2022 09:39

Don’t know about cancer but I gave up Diet Coke nearly a month ago and I seem to have lost a fair bit of fat from by belly. Maybe it’s a coincidence or maybe it was doing terrible things to my insulin levels?
