Diet Coke & cancer

Does anyone who is addicted to the fizzy juice worry about the risks of cancer as a result? I have no idea why I think this, but it's become a bit of a thing for me now and I can't stop thinking about it Shock

OP posts:

Four litres of anything g a day is a lot to drink- did your coke drinking friend replace it with anything else @UneFoisAuChalet? Maybe he was massively dehydrated?

OP, you're not really addicted, so if you're worried then drink less or stop completely.

CaronPoivre · 16/11/2022 21:35

The biggest risk is severe osteoporosis. The phosphorus strips your bones and teeth of calcium.

To consume enough artificial sweetener in a day to be over your daily allowance and at risk of illness (not cancer!) I think it's over 10 cans a day. There's no official cancer links (as far as I know) that the EFSA have credited for artificial sweeteners.

It's in so many things now though that add diet yoghurts and other foods to a few cans and you can be consuming quite a lot of artificial sweeteners.

Tinner01 · 16/11/2022 21:53

Do you know what the number one, proven, catch all factor for having a chance of developing cancer is?

having cells in your body.

obvs everything in moderation etc but at the end of the day cancer is caused by a million factors and life’s too short to life in stress about it.

WonderingWanda · 16/11/2022 20:52

Not really the point of the thread but how are you all drinking these diet drinks? Fake sugar tastes revolting to me, so artificially sweet and a weird after taste. I don't drink fizzy drinks often enough to care about the sugar content but I have a hard time finding any that don't contain that horrible taste these days. I would rather drink water. I have no idea if it it's actually bad for you but remain convinced that something which tastes that grim must be bad for you.

What's the point of worrying about that when we're all breathing polluted poisoned air?

Can't believe people actually think this when we in the uk are living longer than ever ! With electric cars popping up all
Over and clean air zones to go with them

Metabigot · 16/11/2022 21:55

I'm a fizzy drunk addict. Whilst not ideal, I've found a brand sweetened with stevia which is better than aspartame or sugar called green drinks, they sell in sainsbury and amazon

I don’t know about cancer but I know two people close to me who have suffered with ‘coke’ addiction. One suffered so much when he came off the stuff. Burning pee, delirium, sweats, headaches, insomnia etc.. it really freaked me out. He was drinking 4 litres of the crap everyday and it was like an episode of Dopesick when he stopped.

Based on that I never drink the stuff. Maybe in a vodka twice a year or a few sips when I het a McDonald’s for the kids. It’s bloody poison!

You'll have the same symptoms if you give up anything caffeinated - be it coke, coffee or tea.

It's not the coke itself that's the problem, it's the amount of caffeine you're consuming on a daily basis that causes addiction.

DamnUserName21 · 16/11/2022 22:03

There is still a debate. Some studies have shown there is a link, some have not. Various health agencies are saying no. I, personally, feel there is based on and off reading over the years. However, alcohol likely has a greater risk of causing cancer along with pollution, plastic in food and water, insecticides, eating processed meat, etc, so you may as well not worry about it and enjoy life drinking booze, eating aspartame and processed meat, etc, in moderation.

Occitane · 16/11/2022 22:08

I love Diet Coke and drink far too much, although I am trying to cut down. I drink the caffeine free version, so don't need to worry about too much caffeine.

I am interested in the link with obesity. I am really overweight. I would be interested to find out if the people on this thread who say they drink a lot of diet drinks every day are overweight. Is anyone willing to share?

Because science. Cant believe people dont google before arguing with others.

OneFrenchEgg · 16/11/2022 22:15

Oh wow. I remember the whole aspartame panic - forgot all about it til now. Op I drink two cans a day, not worried at all. My 40 a day Marlboro habit as a teen, more concerned about tbh.

Of course, but I share the difficulty understanding how people like the taste of aspartame - I can taste it instantly in drinks, yoghurts, sweets etc and find it vile, I feel very sensitive to it. I am partial to a full fat coke so I’m not judging anyone, it’s just curious to me how the taste is palatable to anyone. I wonder if people who love it broke through a taste barrier to acquire the taste or if I just have weird tastebuds.

weird tastebuds? You don’t like something so the millions of people who do like this very popular drink have weird tastebuds? No Drinking through a barrier here, I loved it from the first sip!

@Occitane I’m not overweight but my weight does go up when I have too much Diet Coke - I think it’s something to do with insulin and your body getting a spike when it gets a sweet taste but then gets no calories with it.

Hollyhead · 16/11/2022 22:25

I always have to point this out but alcohol is almost as carcinogenic as asbestos but no one ever seems to worry about drinking alcohol! I’d not worry too much about DC.

Goawayangryman · 16/11/2022 22:26

Why would you not just read some decent scientific papers and put your mind at rest?

You know what else causes cancer? Living. And cell division. Oh, and obesity, overweight, and alcohol. Burnt meat, preserved meat, some household chemicals, air pollution, industrial pollution.... Why focus on aspartame?

@Beginningless I am the same. I accidently bought low sugar yoghurt the other day which had sweeteners instead and it tasted so bad I could not finish it.

I do think it's a taste bud thing, I have the same theory about goats cheese. It tastes delicious to some people and like dirty old socks to others (me!). I will eat pretty much anything else, and regularly try goats cheese again, but nope, still absolutely rank.

Everything gives you cancer if you read the right articles.

Your comment reminded me of this article. Best not to overthink things.

Yes, dirty old socks for me too! And I want to like it! I am also very sensitive to polystyrene- if I eat food served in it, the taste of polystyrene repeats on me all day. I shall consider my tastebuds weird.

Sugar is pretty bad for your health too

yea but the sweeteners they put in to replace it aren't good either.

Sugar has proven bad effects on health. As far as I’ve read the same isn’t true for sweeteners. Can’t believe they are good for you though.

Allywill · 16/11/2022 23:07

I drink around 2 cans a day now but that is much reduced from my peak consumption which was around double that. I mostly worry about the effect on my teeth but I did once give it up for a year. I proudly told the dental hygienist and she said she couldn’t notice any visible difference so I went back on it. I,’m in my mid 50s and have been drinking it daily for around 35 years, never had any significant health problems if that helps.

Yeah so many things! I'm currently worrying myself stupid about ibuprofen and kidney cancer. The amount of times I've given it to the kids, thinking nothing of it. Then there's possible hormones and pesticides in food feeding cancer. .....All this worry could probably cause cancer......

The big health risk from drinking lots is lessened bone density and subsequent osteoporosis.

It's pretty hostile to teeth too (acid erosion)

bluefrog11 · 16/11/2022 23:28

Don’t know about cancer but there’s certainly a link with type 2 diabetes….
