Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

Or because…wait for it…some of us don’t want to date teetotallers OR drunk drivers. 🤷🏽‍♀️😂

That's good because lots of people don't want drunks..

Is the fact that he drank milk with his dinner on a first date his defining characteristic,@teslaplayer , or does he have any other features that impressed you - positively or negatively?

Personally I would have just asked him, in a casual or joking rather than "this is so odd!!" kind of way. But maybe he expected you to ask........ maybe it was some kind of weird test to see your reaction...

Ooo I like this theory

pictish · 16/11/2022 17:26

Yeah this wouldn’t bother me.I still drink a glass of milk sometimes and all three of my kids drink milk regularly at 21, 15 and 13.

I think the notion that you should stop drinking milk at a certain age more bizarre than anyone ordering it as a drink. What a senseless thing to hold against someone.

TerraNostra · 16/11/2022 13:52

@HermioneKipper you prefer your blokes fat with rotten teeth then?

🤣 are you being serious?! No need to be a dick

I know it’s a stupid thing to get the ick over but I did!

My husband drinks san pellegrino orange sometimes, which I used to think was mega wanky, but I find him attractive so god knows what it was when this particular bloke ordered Diet Coke

mellicauli · 16/11/2022 17:29

Definitely a bit odd. It could be construed as a bit childish. Or not very manly. But worst of all, he didn't follow the thought process that leads him to think how you might judge him for it and then think better of it. Impressing you didn't even cross his mind. It's not a great start, is it?

Or maybe he doesn't consider it weird and so didn't think the OP would?

2nd date he will be asking for "bitty"Envy

😂😂😂😂😂

You think that people who don’t want to date teetotallers or drunk drivers…are drunks or do want drunks? Please explain that train of thought.

Jedsnewstar · 16/11/2022 17:32

Had he been to the gym before. Some people have milk after as a source of protein.

bringincrazyback · 16/11/2022 17:33

HermioneKipper · 16/11/2022 12:55

I’d feel the same!

I went on a first date with a really gorgeous bloke and he ordered a Diet Coke. Awful but I found it so off putting for some reason. No idea why. I wouldn’t have been impressed by a pint of Stella either so I’m clearly very unreasonable!

Not being snarky, but I'm curious now 😁- what kind of drink would you have liked him to order?

CAJIE · 16/11/2022 17:33

This is why I despair of people and women especially. Why the hell does milk matter? He may have a stomach ulcer. Why is it not nice for goodness sake? Why are you such a conformist lot of people? If he was an a....hole then fine but give him a chance and think out of the box???

MarmiteMama17 · 16/11/2022 17:33

Heartburn?

reflux?

my man is hot as fuck but he is one weird eater, who cares

Mummadeze · 16/11/2022 17:33

Personally I would like the fact he goes his own way. And honestly, there are a trillion worse flaws he could have other than liking milk with his meal. A bit more open mindedness might be needed here.

Why women especially? Do you think that men don't get the ick over nonsense things?

Bangolads · 16/11/2022 17:38

Normal is a spectrum. What’s bat shit crazy for one person is mundane for another. None of us gets to decide that their behaviours the right one. If you’re put off my a person orders glass of milk and have to come to MN to discuss it maybe relationships aren’t for you 🤪

Bangolads · 16/11/2022 17:39

@Underanothersky I think you’ll find she said people and women - I think men are classed as people now a days!

For a potential partner to do weird things and not even realise they were weird be even more excruciatingly embarrassing to me. I am sure other people are more tolerant.

She said ‘people and women especially’. @Underanothersky has questioned the ‘women especially’.

CruCru · 16/11/2022 18:07

I think how I’d feel about this would depend on how the restaurant reacted. If the waiter said “Sure thing!” then I’d be fine with it. If they went “Oh … I can find out whether that’s available …” then it isn’t on the menu and I’d be put off.

I think people should be happy with what they can get at the restaurant they go to or go to another restaurant.

eggandonion · 16/11/2022 18:11

Id prefer a man ordering a glass of milk to just a tap water. And I don't like a glass of milk myself!

SleepingStandingUp · 16/11/2022 18:16

Booklover3 · 16/11/2022 13:01

My OH drinks like by the bucket load… but he would never have ordered it on a first date. Or any date actually. He usually tells me he fancies some milk to drink when we are out eating and I’m usually the one saying well if that’s what you want then order it… but he doesn’t because he finds it embarrassing.

So perhaps it should be kudos to the date that he was just himself and didn't put on a pretence for OP. If she finds him unattractive cos he didn't just drink water all night, I don't think he'd missing out

bringincrazyback · 16/11/2022 19:31

But there's no single definition of weird, as this thread proves. It's entirely subjective, so how's anyone supposed to realise others might be judging them as weird?

I'd definitely prefer the water

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 16/11/2022 19:56

I never really thought about this until now but it appears there is an abnormality scale for drinking milk.

Ordering a glass of milk at dinner = quite abnormal apparently.

Ordering a mug of warm milk with a little bit of ground plant seed = perfectly normal

Ordering a glass of thicker flavoured milk with cream and other garnishes = acceptable depending on venue.

Who knew there were so many layers to drinking milk.

ToWhitToWhoo · 16/11/2022 20:46

Wouldn't bother me.
