Excuse the daily mail link but I am absolutely raging at this

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11432097/Woman-wearing-suffragette-scarf-kicked-Scottish-parliament-gender-debate.html

ps MNHQ - tucking away discussion into its own wee sub forum doesn’t make you any better

‘also, this woman wasn't removed due to her scarf like many are ,suggesting here. She was removed for her comments and behaviour.’

is that true? Because that definitely not what’s been reported.

Nope. It's unmitigated shite. The woman concerned was asked to remove her scarf or leave so she chose to leave. When she asked Security why she'd been asked to leave, she was told it was 'political'. She had broken no rules (see picture) and Parliament have had to apologise for their actions. There's absolutely no way they would have apologised if it had been to do with her behaviour. As it is, it's been an embarrassing climb down for the Parliament which is being reported in national papers.

In addition, when returning to the Committee room after a break, women were told they wouldn't be readmitted if they were wearing suffragette colours. One woman was told to remove her (purely) purple silk scarf.

PaterPower · 16/11/2022 15:53

They're not too far removed from archetypal terrorists who blow stuff up

They were also subjected to the Cat and Mouse Act, placed under surveillance and hauled back into prison for specious reasons. The prison authorities isolated them and brutally force fed them to prevent them from continuing their hunger strike protests.

So yes… some startling parallels to how “archetypal terrorists” are treated in Gitmo, and the less well publicised black sites, in these apparently more enlightened times.

Brefugee · 16/11/2022 16:09

Sometimes to get your rights you have to fight. Ask the ANC.

ArabellaScott · 16/11/2022 16:14

entropynow · 16/11/2022 14:30

Ah but she needs to go on MN to scream about those evil trans rights, dontcha know?

'scream'.

We see you.

Happylittlechicken · 16/11/2022 16:15

Wasn’t Nelson Mandela a terrorist at one point? And yet he is venerated? Why are women held to different standards when they fight for their rights? Surely if you condemn the suffragettes you must also condemn him?

NewBootsAndRanty · 16/11/2022 16:20

I really like this style, but it appears to be child size Hmm

Try looking at a shop selling University scarves. They are/were a fair size.

The suffragettes planted bombs in theatres/churches etc and blinded/horribly maimed innocent postal workers with their letter bombs which would blow up in said postal workers faces

They're not too far removed from archetypal terrorists who blow stuff up

You see this often. Everyone forgets that religion has been responsible for multiple wars, murder, terror, torture and abuse of billions over the course of history. Nobody brings this up when people wear crosses or other religious symbols.

So bombing the innocent public is OK because religion?

lilylouisa · 16/11/2022 16:26

After reading all the comments I am at a loss for words atm. Women's rights eroded by the far right and intolerant totalitarian left. It feels like we're in a dystopian nightmare. Self ID for sex offenders, thrown out of parliament for being a feminist, young girls murdered in Iran for not covering their hair, abortion rights under threat, 'sex work' the new progressive idea to save the world, and to top it off, the erasure of woman as a sex class. And of course, the mainstream news channels barely lift an eyebrow. Even Woman's hour barely mentions anything actually to do with the hell that's coming for us if we don't speak up.
To make it known to other women on the street, that the resistance is building I managed to just purchase a scarf (could be for a Hockey team's scarf for all I know, but crucially has all suffragette colours) on eBay. Check out 'Womens Suffragette Warp Knit Stripe Scarf' if you're still looking.

Good grief such hyperbole.

A woman wearing a suffragette scarf is bombing NO ONE!

NewBootsAndRanty · 16/11/2022 16:33

Thanks @Madcats and @lilylouisa for the suggestions - I've ordered the one off ebay Smile

lilylouisa · 16/11/2022 16:40

You're very welcome :)

I'm just making the point that showing direct support of what is basically a terrorist organisation similar to Al Queda isn't the same as wearing a rainbow lanyard - because the suggragettes were similar to these groups in their actions, yet it's usually dismissed because people support the end cause.

It never ceases to amaze me what people will turn a blind eye to when they share the same objectives. I always wonder whether these people would still support them if it was their daughter that was permanently blinded by a letterbomb at work or killed by a blast while at the theatre. I highly doubt it tbh.

You are talking about women who were fighting for the right to vote. Perhaps if we were treated as equals in the first place the fight would not have been necessary. Don't you think women should have rights?

Women are fighting to retain those rights that you would happily see given away. When we peacefully protest we are attacked & violently by men and their supporters. You turn a blind to that.

You say nothing about the fact that women are being raped in what should be our safe spaces by sex offenders and rapists who claim to be trans.

You think nothing of children being medicalised & mutilated to prop up a cause the objective of which is to remove women's rights.

Your feelings on women are clear.

Happylittlechicken · 16/11/2022 16:58

So @TruckerBarbie are you also condemning Nelson Mandela? Just so we can be clear it’s the tactics you object to and not the sex of the protestors?

lifeturnsonadime · 16/11/2022 17:00

So many typos in my post. Apologies. Raging that men think so little of us and are prepared to say so on mumsnet.

And I was making the point that do you also point this out to people wearing crosses or do you pick and choose?

If you disapprove of the suffragettes, @TruckerBarbie, you'll be wanting a word with Nicola Sturgeon and co.

The captions to the photos in the news story below read "Female MSPs including Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, Linda Fabiani and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wear scarves in the colours of the suffragettes" and "Female MSPs Linda Fabiani and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, wore scarves in the colours of the suffragettes"

Not a scarf but radicalteatowels.co.uk have lots of great products you might like. Great for Xmas gifts.

How do you feel about che Guevara shirts @TruckerBarbie ? Should they not be allowed either? He had some very dodgy tactics

Oh fuck off with the trans bullshit. I've not said anything about 'thinking nothing of' xyz.

I just don't believe that blowing up innocent people is ever the solution. Pretty worrying that you do!

The suffragettes weren't even that instrumental in getting women the vote. It was more the war effort and the fact that other countries had already given women the vote, making us look behind.

Most men didn't have the vote until women did and you can be sure the rich suggragettes competing with men probably weren't too fussed about whether their maids got the vote. Try actually doing some research rather than blindly following what people tell you is 'the righteous feminist mindset'.

Probably not a great idea to wear one in parliament.

What's with all the whataboutery today!

When have I said that?

Lying to make a nonsense point is not a good look.

And this whole thread was about what is happening Scotland, which is the erasure of women's rights in favour of trans inclusion. So don't tell me to fuck off for coming back to the actual point of the thread and the reason the woman wore the scarf.
