General election tomorrow - who do you vote for?

IaminRome · 15/11/2022 19:12

I'm so sick of this government and reading a lot of the posts on here, it feels like on the one hand, so are lots of people, but there are also lots of other people who are very sceptical about labour or lib dem or greens. Added to which, there are so many issues at the moment, I know there's a lot of GC and what makes a woman, that is particularly important at the moment, and cost of living, private rentals, the environment, etc etc

So knowing what you know about the parties, if there was a general election tomorrow, who would you vote for..

YABU - Tories
YANBU - Labour
Comment for a third option

I used to be green, but I'm so not sure any more. So I think I'd vote labour, to stand best chance of keeping Tories out. (What I'd really like to vote for is a more representative government)

We have to get rid of the Tories. Not voting or voting for minority parties or spoiling ballot papers won't do this. We haven't got that luxury this time. If you're fed up with them, vote them out.

Cariadm · 27/05/2023 20:40

I hope that will make you feel SO MUCH better if and when the Tories get in for another 5 years?! People like you who are more interested in selfishly making a rather illogical 'point' than seeing the bigger picture and understanding what the priority is!!
We need to do WHATEVER we can to rid the country of the worst 'state hating' government in living memory who are intent on completely wrecking the country both socially and economically!! But, hey, you make your little protest, that will REALLY help, not!!! 😱😡

If Labour need five years to rethink the folly of telling women they are bigots for not believing in the female penis then that's just too bad.

Don't get angry with me for not wanting to vote for that misogynistic clown show.

Get angry with Labour for doing their level best to miss an open goal.

It's not MY responsibility to get the Tories out. It's LABOUR'S responsibility to get the Tories out by coming up with sensible and deliverable policies that people actually want. It's absolutely fucking shameful that after 13 years of austerity, Brexit, Covid, cost of living crisis and all the rest of it, Labour appear to have literally nothing to offer us other than "we're not the Tories".

We desperately need an opposition capable of leading the country. Of taking this mess and sorting it out. And what have we got? "Women can have penises and if you don't agree you're a terrible bigoted dinosaur who hoards rights and you need to be re-educated."

Jesus fucking Christ.

We must have all done something really terrible in a previous life to deserve these options.

Jewel1968 · 27/05/2023 20:50

Maybe one of those parties that are in effect a protest vote. I don't trust any of the leaders but I think there are probably some local MPs that are good.

Same here.

Jourdain11 · 27/05/2023 20:56

Cariadm · 27/05/2023 20:16

Then I hope you don't feel able or entitled to complain about ANYTHING as you can't be bothered to put one little cross on one little bit of paper EVERY 4 YEARS...
You can even do it by post so don't even have to leave home!! Our democracy may not be perfect but it's the only one we have until the First Passed the Post voting system is changed to Proportional Representation.
If you're female you should be really shamed as many women suffered and even DIED to finally be given the right to vote!

Err, what?!

Jourdain11 · 27/05/2023 20:58

Why the hell does that mean I can't complain or comment? I pay taxes - I live here, the same as everyone else!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/05/2023 23:37

The party that will evict the Tories in my constituency.

Same.

MargotBamborough · 27/05/2023 20:32

I'm disillusioned because I don't think the other lot will be any fucking better than the present bunch of corrupt and inept narcissistic nasties!

OMG!!! Yes we get that much but did you even read my reply and do you even understand what the FPTP voting system is or 'tactical voting'? 🤔
Getting rid of the Tories is more important than you sitting on your high horse making pointless gestures...There is a much BIGGER PICTURE and PRIORITIES!!!🙄😡

happinessischocolate · 27/05/2023 21:03

All the non voters and ballot paper spoilers

Imagine the tories got in again

Imagine they then took away your right to vote - not beyond the realms of possibility the way this country is going.

Would you regret not voting then?

Realistically, though, FPTP makes voting feel very pointless for many people.

You can't actually tell people what kind of government they should want. Maybe they are content with a Conservative government - or think it's the lesser of two evils.

What's with all the CAPITALS? I ask this as the one who you've said doesn't have the right to complain about ANYTHING.

100% agree with you Margot. The idea that Labour will magically make things nice for everyone is laughable.

This is in response to the Law Commission recommendation to protect women from misogyny as that is not included in current legislation.

Transgender identity is already included along with race, religion, disability and sexual orientation under the current legislation.

Rape is an actual crime and we have a 1% conviction rate for it. You can repeatedly rape a child in a park and get community service. You can murder a woman, call it sex gone wrong and get a slap on the wrist. You can burn a woman to death in the street in this country and get a sentence commution for being under 25. Do you think women are walking around thinking 'they really must bring in an anti-misogyny law, that will make things nice for us gals!'

Labour is the party of Leeds Holbeck managed zone, sex work is work and labelling child sexual exploitation survivors 'trashy swerfs'. Excuse me if I'm not convinced of their female friendly credentials.

Also 'gender reassignment' is the PC - not 'transgender identity'.

Yes, mate, I do understand what FPTP is.

It's the system that allows Labour to sit on their arses doing fuck all and just waiting for the pendulum to swing back their way instead of actually doing something positive to win people's votes.

I'm not sure whether Labour are doing the whole "women can have penises" thing because they like being in opposition, think running a country looks like quite hard work and would prefer another five years of getting paid to shout about how terrible the Tories are from the opposition benches, or whether they're doing it because they assume they will win the election whatever they do because people are so fed up with the Tories and think it's an ideal opportunity to force through policies like self ID which most people don't support.

Either way, neither of those possibilities exactly inspires confidence.

And don't you dare tell me what my priorities should be, and that getting rid of the Tories is more important than the rights, safety and dignity of all women and girls. I'm not trying to tell you what your priorities should be.

Imagine this completely hypothetical scenario which is straight out of your imagination and has no basis in reality, you mean?

Jourdain11 · 27/05/2023 21:26

Mind you, Labour thought FPTP would keep them safe forever in Scotland and that didn't exactly work out well for them. Partly indy ref that led to their collapse in 2015, but also in big part due to MPs who thought their majority was safe as houses and did bugger all in their constituency as a result.

verdantverdure · 27/05/2023 21:29

We used to have the right to vote automatically on turning 18.

Now we only have the right to vote if we obtain acceptable ID and the ID we present is accepted.

verdantverdure · 27/05/2023 21:31

Taking personal responsibility is one of my values so I think it IS my responsibility to do what I can to make things better for my country and my children.

pointythings · 27/05/2023 21:32

@Colourfingers2 I'm not sure what your issue is. You posted a lot of lies, myth and misrepresentation, I rebutted what you posted. You have completely failed to address that at all.

And on gender issues - let's face it, the Tories have done fuck all about it. In the past 13 years under the Tories, we've had all the self ID stuff come in that people are so angry about. I'm not happy with it either.

However, as the parent of a disabled young adult, the last thing I want is another term of the Tories attacking my child, calling them a scrounger, making them fight for every last scrap of support. Given how many people in the UK are coping with disabilities, long term health issues etc. that is the greater priority by far.

verdantverdure · 27/05/2023 21:31

Taking personal responsibility is one of my values so I think it IS my responsibility to do what I can to make things better for my country and my children.

Isn't that what everyone is doing when they choose how to cast their vote?

Some people think voting Tory is best for their country and their children.

Some people think voting Labour is best for their country and their children.

And some people think that both those options are so terrible that they cannot in good conscience support either of them, and prefer to use their vote to send a message that THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

OrwellianTimes · 27/05/2023 21:35

Monster Raving Looney.

the only ones who actually mean their manicfesto.

verdantverdure · 27/05/2023 21:41

I guess I feel like I don't have the luxury of wasting my vote in that way @MargotBamborough

I feel honour-bound to try and do something to make things better for my children and my country.

And after 13 years of the Tories that means doing the only thing I can to try and keep them out:

Vote tactically for whoever has a chance of beating our safe seat Tory.

kikisparks · 27/05/2023 21:42

SNP. There is a huge amount of hate for them here and they haven’t covered themselves in glory recently, but I do agree with a lot of their progressive policies, think they have done a lot of good work actually, and I want Scotland to be independent.
