To shower every day or not?

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

The good ol ‘water and soap will run down anyway’ haha I remember that thread.

I remember that thread too . Grown women who get into a shower and wash like a 10 yr old . Washing only parts of their body 'cos everyone knows gravity is better than a soapy flannel/sponge .Why won't they wash their back/stomach etc.

Growing up without a bathroom we bathed once a week in a tin bath. I never did get into showering every day - I feel it kills your natural oils and protection, and some of the products are just not good for you, particularly not for your foof - I just blast mine with warm water. Now I am post menopause, I can make do with twice a week - one of the little known advantages of old age is you smell less, unless you widdle yourself of course.

Don't say that on here, you will get hung, drawn and quartered.

Oh god no!
As a nurse I can tell you that we often get people who are unable to shower and rather than having good skin it's very very dry and clouds of skin cells erupt.
I've had people cry with relief and happiness. when we manage to get them in the shower.

I use a triple milled soap which is moisturising, not cheap harsh products.
Nothing like being clean and smelling beautiful.
I'm being serious here but I really think my MH would suffer if I didn't shower or bath daily.
I never get into bed unless I've had a bath or shower.

Disabilities and other issues notwithstanding I will never, I mean never, understand how basic hygiene is such a bone of contention for so many people. Asking someone if they should shower daily is to me similar to asking someone if they should drink enough water daily. People will really tie themselves in knots defending why they should follow the rules of basic hygiene. It's a common theme on Mumsnet and elsewhere.

I completely agree and even in people with disabilities it’s good to promote and teach them a good higiene routine . My oldest has severe autism but knows to well that as soon as she gets up she should have a shower , it’s part of her routine .
I would not feel clean without a daily shower .
even when I had my kids by c section , the first thing I do as soon as I can get up is have a shower and put clean pyjamas and I normally only stay in 24 hours , people here saying they don’t shower a whole week , I’m shocked .

Do you have a link to your soap please? I sounds just what I need.

Greenballoons · 15/11/2022 21:31

No, I don’t exercise. I don’t have the energy really. I come back home at 5 and spend 2 hours with my kids, then 7-8 is bed time routine, 8-9 is dinner and tidying up the kitchen. 9-10 I normally cook for my next day’s lunch while I have glass of wine to unwind. At 10.30-11pm I am just ready to go to bed and the last thing I want is to take off my warm pajamas to get wet!

It takes 3 minutes to shower and easy yourself. Even the busiest of people can spare 3 minutes

3 mins to shower?

Turn on shower, undress, get in, wash hair, rinse hair, condition hair, wash body, rinse body, rinse hair, turn off shower, get out, dry body, dry hair, apply body lotion.

3 mins, really?

Greenballoons · 15/11/2022 21:34

For those of you that bath can you please give me exact timings on when you do it? Is it like at 6am when kids are asleep or 10pm when again kids are asleep?

I have a bath whenever I feel like it and is convenient. Sometimes that's 10am. Or 10pm. Or 4pm. Or 3am.

But my DC are teens. Although even when they were small I could leave them for long enough to have a bath.

I undress before turning on the shower, and don't apply any sort of body lotion. Evening shower=no hair washing.
I think it's completely possible to shower in 3 minutes TBH. I wouldn't include drying my hair in showering time though.

3 minutes to shower. Showering is the bit when you're in the shower! But turning on shower and taking off pyjamas takes about 5 seconds, so I'm not sure why you'd count that.

Aswad · 15/11/2022 21:46

I shower daily, more often than not, twice a day. In the morning as I feel I have to and would feel weird if I didn’t (like not brushing my teeth) and in the evenings to help me relax and wind down. I also brush my teeth in there so feel like I’m saving extra time.
sometimes, if I’m really cold, I’ll shower as it’s the quickest way to warm up!

Greenballoons · 15/11/2022 21:49

To be very honest I can’t, just can’t, put my alarm even 15min earlier to shower! Plus I never wake up sweaty unless I am on fever. So, as I am not sweaty I find no reason to shower in the morning.

I know that my eldest around 6.30-7am is awake and my eldest is a toddler, meaning she will be screaming the house down from that moment onwards. I just can’t lose my precious sleep to get wet when I don’t feel dirty.

Thats why I usually shower at night!

Those of you that shower in the morning how do you find the energy to do it in the dark when everyone else is asleep?

It's just routine. Get up, and straight into the shower, then have breakfast, get ready for work etc you can do it if you want to.
House full of adults here now but when the DC were little I'd get up before they did to make sure I could have my shower.

I have a baby and I have showered every single day since she was born. Not before she was awake, as that would have been horrific, but at some point during the mornings, even if it took having her in the bathroom with me (she napped, like, never).

Nowadays I shower in the evenings as her father is with her then and it's less stressful for me. It also means I'm ready to go in the morning if need be.

I don't think it's a matter of circumstances, it's a matter of priority. I could not go a day without a shower - I'd feel horrible. I think I showered the day I gave birth and I could hardly walk.

Do you change your underwear every day? Because I couldn't put on clean underwear unless I'd had a shower.

TruckerBarbie · 15/11/2022 22:20

I need a shower every day. I get dust in my hair and often get socks wet tramping around muddy sites.

MysteryBelle · 15/11/2022 22:25

So it’s not really about the other things, it is that you’re tired. You have two little ones, a full time job, no help, and once you’ve got all the other tasks, you see showering as another chore and you’re warm in your pjs and don’t want to get cold and wet. That does make sense. And no one to mind the children.

I guess what I’d try then is running a quick bath when you’ve put them to bed, before you put on pjs, and before you do the other chores so that you’re snuggly warm after the bath. In the bath for 5 minutes. You can hear if your children wake up, if you’re in the tub, unlike over the noise of a running shower. Would that work?

Greenballoons · 15/11/2022 22:33

Exactly that! I can give it a go!

I didn’t have the tin bath experience, but otherwise I am the same. I used to shower and bath more often when I was younger, but since menopause, on a quiet week at home, twice a week is fine. Although as I said earlier, on hot summer days, I’ll have a cool shower or bath (occasionally more than once 😲) and I always shower after a workout at the gym or a run.

sorenlorenson1 · 16/11/2022 01:34

I have a quick shower every morning. I shower before the kids wake up, it’s just part of my routine of actually feeling ‘awake.’ I don’t feel properly awake unless I've had that quick shower and morning coffee. I’m always happy to wake before the kids for this. I don’t wash my hair in the mornings. I have a longer shower or a bath in the evenings. (A bath is probably twice a week on average) that is my bit of time alone and I just find it relaxing. Love to get into bed feeling fresh and clean as well. I wash my hair every other day or sometimes longer (and use dry shampoo if longer) I’m not sure if I ‘need’ to have this amount of showers or not. But it makes me feel good and helps me both to wake up / wind down.

sorenlorenson1 · 16/11/2022 01:37

Oh and my kids - my 3 year old and 9 year old love their baths and have one most nights before bed. But it’s not an issue to me if they skip it now and again. My sons are teenagers and shower every night. Sometimes this has to be encouraged, and they would probably happily just stink for a few days without being told to go and wash 🤣

Faultymain5 · 16/11/2022 06:02

Lolabear38 · 15/11/2022 16:53

True - but showering every other day doesn’t necessarily equate to poor hygiene. Not showering for a week or more and I would agree with you - showering every 48 hours instead of every 24? I’m not sure that’s going to make a massive difference. As long as people are washing their hands regularly I think it’s ok.

Many dermatologists are now advising against washing every day as all of the fragrances and things they add to soaps and shower gels can dry out your skin if used too much.

So it’s not the showering exactly it’s the products that are the problem?

Well, according to some dermatologists, yes.

For me (and I don’t think of it as a ‘problem’) I’m comfortable showering every other day.
