To shower every day or not?

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

No wonder we have pandemics.

Ridiculous comment! No one needs to shower every day

Grim. So that explains why so many people stink on public transport.

That's usually too much deodorant/perfume/smelly stuff and hangover breath.

plymouthspark · 15/11/2022 00:14

BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR BUM AND VAG??

How do you keep your bits clean? A week is far too long. I couldn't even imagine the smell!

This. I need to have a clean private area. I can just about understand not showering every day but what happens during your period if you're not washing daily?

Of course I shower every day , actually morning and night. It’s a no brained for me. I wash my hair twice a week.
My kids are now 19 and 21 and they have between 1-4 showers a day.
When they were growing, they had a bath or shower every night before bed.

Have you heard anything about saving water?,

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2022 00:23

Flannel/sink washes were a thing when I was growing up. As an adult I vowed to never do that as I hated it and as a PP said it’s less faff to just have a shower.
And I have one twice a day because I want to and I can. 🤷‍♀️

So selfish

Firstly I changed name for this thread as I knew most people would say they shower daily and I didn’t want to expose who I am.

Secondly, someone said that wash is to wash your bottom in the sink? How are you doing that? I get the armpits and face but the bottom?

Thirdly, those of you that shower in the morning do you also shower in the evenings? I mean you get home and you are probably at the dirtiest state you could be in your day. Wouldn’t it be more sensible to have a shower then rather than in the morning? If I simplify it and I just think of my hands I would wash them when I come back from work rather than washing them when I wake up in the morning as they are not dirty in the morning after my sleep!

If you don't know how to give yourself a sink wash then maybe you should still be at home with your mother.

Really, OP, you need to wash your arse, your face and your oxters every single day no matter what culture you come from because if you don't you will stink. You won't smell your own stink yourself, if you are living with other smelly people, they won't smell you either but others will smell you.

You will pong and it is bloody anti-social. Get three flannels-wipe one to your face, one to your arse and one to your oxters. Rinse and repeat every day for the rest of your life.

DuchessDandelion · 15/11/2022 00:54

@SundownOnTheStair I have to ask. Oxters??

SundownOnTheStair · 15/11/2022 00:55

Armpits

DuchessDandelion · 15/11/2022 01:00

Nameismadeup · 15/11/2022 01:01

@Greenballoons this is interesting. I don't imagine this is unusual. As people have said, every body is different and there's a bias for people to say they clean more regularly than they do.

It sounds like you are suggesting there is a cultural aspect to showering habits. I'd be interested to learn about how expectations vary in different countries? I could imagine it varies a lot in Europe and probably quite significantly across the world.

I don't think there is a right way but I expect it's something people feel strongly about based on what they are used to. My grandparents used to have to wash at the local bath house when they were young, so baths we once a week only a few years ago, so it's odd to see such strong opinions

ChickenBurgers · 15/11/2022 01:11

Yes I do. In the summer I usually shower twice a day. It’s very rare I’ll miss a shower.

TerrorAustralis · 15/11/2022 01:13

You do realise that it’s possible to shower without washing your hair and without doing a full foot scrub, leg shave etc? You can have a quick shower where you just wet your body, rinse vag with water, lather up armpits, bottom and feet, rinse off and that’s it. Takes all of a few minutes, and certainly seems (to me) like no more effort than a sink/flannel wash.

Everyone in my family showers daily. Even at my most ill, when I haven’t been unable able to do anything else, I shower daily.

Opposite to your childhood experience, I grew up in a country where many people considered British people to have poor personal hygiene because they didn’t shower or bathe every day.

Faultymain5 · 15/11/2022 00:36

By all means do engage if you want to but I’m only asking what you might think soap rings are made out of. A hint is it’s not just soap.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I don’t use products in my bath other than a little soap or body wash rubbed on my my skin (because my vulva is too sensitive to sit in water with lots of product) and guess what . . . . There is no ring around my bath! Also, I’m one of the posters who only bathes once every few days unless I’ve been exercising or the weather is hot! What does that tell you about your theory?

FlamingBells · 15/11/2022 01:19

Showering and keeping clean is a big thing in my culture. We have prescribed washes before the daily prayers & an emphasis on general cleanliness. Regular washes during & after periods and sex, that's standard for most people I hope.

I shower most days and have sink washes in between although it's less hassle to have a 1 min shower. If I'm wfh then I might have a sink wash but I will definitely shower if I'm going into the office. I wash my hair 2/3 times a week as it'll dry out if I wash it daily.

😂 This.

i shower twice a day. I can’t stand putting on clean clothes without a shower. But growing up we showered every night with a wash up in the morning.

i honestly don’t think lots of people can smell themselves so they really don’t know if they stink or not.

pippieham123 · 15/11/2022 01:34

We are supposed to smell slightly, we are living human beings. It’s not normal to smell of nothing or of scented bath products. Now, there is of course a difference between stale sweat/BO and normal human smell, but I don’t think many people realise this - they think any smell is bad

Strokethefurrywall · 15/11/2022 01:41

In answer to your question OP, I shower every day that I work out (which is most days), but on rest days I won't bother unless I'm going out for an occasion. If I'm lolling around the house I absolutely don't.

The British obsession with thinking everyone who doesn't shower every day stinks is utterly baffling. I don't suddenly smell if I don't shower for 24 hours, and certainly not if I'm relaxing at home.

I mean if you stink, by all means bathe every day. If you don't, skip a day. We could all afford to use less water anyway...

HoppingPavlova · 15/11/2022 01:53

These days I’m twice a week generally. Once on the day I go into the office (was hair also), and once on day I go out for groceries or catch up with friends or whatnot. I will have a shower if I have to go out outside of this but really try and restrict it to the 2 days if I can. The pandemic had quite a silver lining for me as prior I was out rushing about every day so I’ve tried to ‘keep the best of it’.

Couldn’t care less what I smell like in my own home and if I have guests I make it on one of my ‘2 days’ so it’s shower day. Supposedly the house doesn’t smell as I do ask occasionally and trust me, my friends are BRUTALLY honest and would say so directly in a heartbeat if that were the case. So, while it’s working I have no plans to alter my current routine.

Fireballxl5 · 15/11/2022 02:04

You can all shower ten times a day but if you’re putting dirty clothes back on you’ll still smell.
Dd had a school trip and apparently one girl had a sweat problem, probably medical, but unfortunately she did smell so the teacher made all the girls shower daily thinking this would discreetly solve the problem.
However this girl then put the sweaty clothes back on.

I think a lot of people on public transport wear the same dirty coats every day. Years ago when dh worked in London his coats got sent to the dry cleaners regularly. The tube is filthy.

in what countries don’t people shower daily ? I shower daily and so does everyone in my household. As babies I bath then every other day .
I can’t understand adults not washing or showering daily .

Mumandcarer · 15/11/2022 02:25

When I was in year 9 noticed a strange smell as we arrived for our maths lesson. Another teacher comes to discuss something. Then she’s sniffing and ask’s our teacher have you had first year’s in? She said her class always smells funny like that when she’s had first year’s in.😂😂😂Always had to open the windows to air the room after. Since then I’ve never left the house without washing. If we are just staying at home I do skip the odd day. Just don’t want to be that smelly person.😷🤷‍♀️

Mumandcarer · 15/11/2022 02:27

My son doesn’t because of his eczema. Showering every day dries his skin out.

Is it really such a stretch to consider that not everyone in every country showers every day?
