To think that not sleeping around when married isn't that big a deal?

Just read an interview with Tim Minchin and he talks about how in his career he travels a lot, loves women, loves to flirt and has got really close at times, especially when women are literally shaking and in tears at meeting him, but then he realised his marriage was too important to throw away.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-11-07/tim-minchin-reassesses-comedy-approach/101564662

"You're away from home for a long time, you're jet-lagged, you're drinking. I think the times I got close to doing the wrong thing made me realise it wouldn't be worth it to blow my marriage... I'm away a lot and I am in a really flamboyant industry and I'm really flirtatious and I really like women."

And meanwhile his wife, who supported him as a social worker at the start, is sitting there having to listen to all this.

I mean, in most long marriages there have presumably been opportunities for both parties. Either you act on them or you don't. But I can't imagine a celebrity woman talking in front of her husband about how she loves men and loves to flirt and had loads of chances to cheat, but didn't. It felt like a gigantic humble brag.

She is obviously being sarky, laughing at him a little and he laughs along too. Looks like they have a nice relationship

Nope. He's an abusive gaslighting walking red flag. She needs to ltb.

You forgot narc. Obvs.

Twinsmummy1812 · 12/11/2022 18:29

He’s a funny guy. He wrote a great song about being lonely when touring and having women throw themselves at him but “took lonely tonight” rather than cheat.

no need to get personal about his or her looks. They love each other, been together forever and it’s nice. I didn’t hear virtue signalling in his words

BadNomad · 12/11/2022 18:29

FallingsHowIFeel · 12/11/2022 18:21

That just means that those who do it are total twats, not that his not doing it is anything that needs highlighting.

If you’re in love with your partner, you’ll be invested in the relationship and not cheat. There’s nothing really needs saying about it. You don’t even get close to doing the wrong thing. You don’t encourage it and if anyone else is getting too close, you shut it down. He’s talking shit.

It is relevant to the conversation. He is talking about the industry he is in. He is talking about fame. Fangirls and cheating is a big part of both.

Its because men’s appearances haven’t been used to oppress them for centuries. I know you want to pretend judging men and judging women is exactly the same, but it isn’t.

Oh that's OK then I guess that gives us permission to be arseholes about a man's appearance until they also become oppressed by it.

It's not like by doing so completely undermines efforts trying to stop the objectification and comments on women's appearence, nope not at all...

waterlego · 12/11/2022 18:30

@BruceWaynettaSlob, did we watch the same video? They both seem happy and stable to me. Not that you can tell much from a brief snapshot, I’m sure. But I didn’t see any evidence of gaslighting in that clip.

It doesn’t undermine it though. It’s irrelevant.

Tiredalwaystired · 12/11/2022 18:31

He wrote a gorgeous song about it called I’ll take lonely tonight. He plays it on tours. It’s basically a big light over his head telling his fans he is unavailable.

I doubt most “normal” people would have the opposite sex throwing themselves at you EVERY night of the week. And I can imagine months on end on the road would make this very tempting, so fair play to him.

I would by the way! Especially when he was in Jesus Christ Superstar. Absolutely my type.

BellePeppa · 12/11/2022 18:31

Boomboom22 · 12/11/2022 16:47

Have you seen him? Think it's unlikely he had many opportunities 🤣

No idea what he looks like. I think I’ll keep it that way.

Dontaskdontget · 12/11/2022 18:31

Ugh what a tool.

So he could have sex whenever he likes? So could any woman under 40 (and most women over).

He’s done some funny songs n all, but I watched the graduation speech he gave at his old university and it was so unfunny it got incredibly awkward, the person who invited him there was on camera and looks so embarrassed as the ‘jokes’ fall flat.

You keep telling yourself what you want Tim.

Stephy1886 · 12/11/2022 18:31

Is it just a money thing?
but who would seriously pump Tim minchin?

LeMoo · 12/11/2022 18:37

I think he's sexy

Stationsofthecross · 12/11/2022 18:37

He’s said a lot more than your summary Op. I also think there was nothing wrong with what he said - he was being honest. I don’t think he said what he did to get some prize or a round of applause.

ScarierThanBoo · 12/11/2022 18:38

Hmm, does he still look haggered and wild like Beetlejuice?

Janbohonut · 12/11/2022 18:39

Don'taskdontget I just sped-watched the speech.

Christ on a bike. Advised them all to read "Twain, Douglas Adams, Vonnegut, McEwan, Sagan, Shakespeare and Dickens."

Not a single woman writer. Ugghhhhhhhh. Couldn't watch the rest.

onlythreenow · 12/11/2022 18:40

That's how I read it too, he was saying that when you're famous it's thrown at you and he took the conscious decision to be faithful to his wife. Those going on about his looks, are we allowed to be so dismissive about a woman's looks now?

This. Also, from some of the comments on this thread some of you must be very young, not to mention naive.

Yes, there's nothing more attractive than a woman shaking and in tears Hmm

Exactly. Honestly, some of you don't have a clue!

So you only have sex with men who read female-authored literature?

must limit your dating pool.

honestly Op you come across as someone who knows fuck all about Tim or his relationship with his wife but have started a thread to slag them off because you’ve misinterpreted a small part of an interview.

its honestly not very nice.

Riverlee · 12/11/2022 18:42

Mmm, I read that differently to you, op, and interpreted it that fame can bring you plenty of opportunity to cheat (and he has been tempted), but he values his marriage over infidelity. He’s being honest about what life in the linelight can bring you.

Pumperthepumper · 12/11/2022 18:44

Mouldyfoodhelp · 12/11/2022 18:42

I don't think it is.

It is though. Commenting on Tim Minchin’s looks on a thread on mumsnet is absolutely nothing like David Walliams slagging off a random woman. The two aren’t connected at all.

Exactly.

but God forbid that someone should be honest about the reality of their life 🤷‍♀️

this thread is just an excuse to pull apart an incredibly successful musician and songwriter because he’s dared to acknowledge that women throw themselves at him.

I’d have thought most women would support a man who values his marriage and fidelity to his wife over opportunistic sex, but apparently that’s something to slag him off for.
weird

Janbohonut · 12/11/2022 18:50

FurandFeathers

I only sleep with one person and he doesn't read fiction at all. But he certainly wouldn't only quote successful men if he was referring to a field of achievement. It's an incredibly conservative list and has no women on it.

In my experience men who only quote Great Male Writers when they talk about writing tend to only read Great Male Writers and that's.... telling.

I suspect this will be a quote that comes back to bite him on the arse someday.

Seems unlikely. He’s been faithful to his wife for 30 years since he was 17.

GyozaGuiting · 12/11/2022 18:50

I think this comes across like he’s already crossed the line. I like him and think he’s attractive now, so I’m not condemning him. But yes he’s definitely done something.
