Worrying about having 4 wisdom teeth out at once?

stopbeeping · 12/11/2022 15:42

Needs to be with a GA as my teeth are really impacted and sideways

I have three children aged 6 months to 6 years old. Worrying about how sore it is afterwards and the practicality of it being done twice. I don't really want two GAs if I could have the one.. but is my head going to feel like I've been stamped on?

Aibu to be getting worked up about this?

All four at once. Do it. You'll be happy it's all over.

vanillaem · 12/11/2022 20:48

I had one wisdom tooth took out 3 days ago. Upper left.

I'm still in agony with a swollen cheek and pretty sure I have a dry socket. Been taking co-cocadomol every 4 hours ever since.

I had a lower left taken out 6 years ago and was eating Big Macs later that evening

Who knows?! But also now I have small children and it's been hell looking after them in this much discomfort and pain.

Do you need them taken out?

I had a wisdom tooth out the other week, just one with local anaesthetic. I felt "fragile" after and I was glad I was off work the rest of the day and for a couple of days after. I didn't take sick but I had been able to book it for when I was off for a few days in my shift pattern.

I hadn't realised at the time but the advice when I googled was to rest for a couple of days so I was pleased to be off and rest/sometimes nap as feeling fragile. I was a little in shock I think.

In your case I would try to get childcare in place as much as possible for a few days e.g. your husband taking annual leave and I would make sure you don't need to drive for a while and just try to rest/nap. Would it be more practical for you to rest at your in laws and your husband to have the kids at home?

I'm sure you will receive medical advice to follow so make sure you read the email/leaflet or whatever.

In my case my dentist recommended not rinsing with salt water at all on the day of the procedure, then very gently holding the liquid to the site (no swooshing) the day after the procedure 5 or 6 times and slowly building up to a little swooshing over the days.

I chose to use cooled boiled water for a few days to make my salt water rinse just to take every precaution I could.

I don't know about your dietary advice as I could eat on the other side because only one tooth out.

I know some people will say they were back at work soon after but there are no prizes for being a hero in this. I'd rather try to take good care of myself/ rest and avoid infection if within my power.

Does anyone know if removing them under sedation is an option instead?

Yes you can have it done under local anaesthetic, general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation(you are awake, but won't remember anything)

Chooseorelse · 12/11/2022 21:34

I had 2 out under GA, it was fine mostly.
I did have a swollen jaw (looked like Maniac Cop - Google it) so wore a scarf around my face in public for a day or two. It wasn’t too painful afterwards, paracetamol and ibuprofen worked fine. Stick to soup for a few days.
Had all 4 out, 2 in dentist and the 2 under GA, so glad I had them removed, they massively impacted!

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 12/11/2022 21:38

I had 4 out at once, two that were impacted. It was absolutely fine and very very quick. No black eyes and the pain afterwards was much more manageable than the hellish face and head pain caused by the teeth themselves

ODPintheNHS · 12/11/2022 21:39

I had 6 including the 4 wisdom teeth out in one go, under general.

i was terrified. The anaesthetist said to me recently that he hasn’t forgotten how scared I was (I now work in theatres)

i felt groggy and shit for about 2 days. Didn’t stop my husband going off to work for a night shift that night and leaving me with the kids though 🤣.

i got a dry socket a few days later. That was the worst bit.

I’ve since worked shifts in dental lists, and actually it’s not that horrific. It’s over quite quickly.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 12/11/2022 21:39

Oh and mine were done with local anaesthesia

Florenz · 12/11/2022 21:41

Having 4 out together doesn't really hurt any more than having 1 out. Might as well have them all out together.

ConsuelaHammock · 12/11/2022 21:45

I had all four out at once under a GA . I don’t remember it being particularly painful afterwards. I just remember the taste of aniseed.

ConsuelaHammock · 12/11/2022 21:46
  • or was it cloves ? Or are they the same thing ??

Cloves and aniseed are different.
I’ve had extensive reconstructive surgery to my lower jaw and as a result had to have a back molar removed on each side. The sockets were packed with gauze infused with some kind of antiseptic. It had a weird taste and smell, not unpleasant but not antiseptic tasting either, I had to have it changed every three days. I’m wonder if we’ve both had the same thing.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 12/11/2022 23:59

I did get a dry socket. The dentist packed it with something that smelled like cloves, and it immediately stopped the pain.

DemelzaandRoss · 13/11/2022 00:41

I always say that having my four wisdom teeth out at once was worse than giving birth. Two impacted with stitches. Off work for 2 weeks, swollen face, pain & bruising.
Child birth fairly easy, in labour for 13 hours over three babies.
However I’m clearly the odd one out here. I wish you good luck & a huge supply of soup.

HotIceCube · 13/11/2022 00:45

I had all four wisdom teeth extracted around 1990.

I’d had trouble with one tooth in particular, had a cyst underneath and had issues with infection previously, so they decided to whip all of them out under GA at the local hospital.

I had read about black eyes, extensive bruising etc but I hardly had any bruising. I had stitches, two teeth weren’t fully through, so I presume this is why.

Back then I had no DC so only had me to think about but tbh it really wasn’t half as bad as I thought it was going to be. A bit sore yes but nothing too painful.

Good luck OP, hope all goes smoothly.

HotIceCube · 13/11/2022 00:47

Oh and I asked for my teeth! I’ve still got them in a jar!! 😬🦷🦷🦷🦷

Solmum1964 · 13/11/2022 01:11

I had all four out under GA about 33 years ago in Sussex after moving to the West Midlands (had been waiting a while so didn't want to wait longer).
I said I bruised easily and was given an injection to help with that. I had rice krispies for breakfast (in hospital) the next morning; stayed the following night with my sister local to the hospital; then traveled home and went to my husband's Christmas works do. It really wasn't too bad

MrsDS · 13/11/2022 01:18

Have the four out. I only had 3 and it’s totally messed up my teeth. X

Wannabegreenfingers · 13/11/2022 07:04

Had all 4 out under a GA years ago. I was very swollen for about a week and only ate soft food, but it was 100% better than the constant infections in my wisdom teeth.

user1471434829 · 13/11/2022 07:49

Mine weren't impacted but they were growing sideways into my cheeks, I had 4 out on the same day under general and was eating pizza the same day as post surgery hurt a lot less than when they were growing into my face! Try not to worry 😊

I had all four out at once under GA. DS was about four months old, I was still breastfeeding. I had the op, came round from the GA, fed DS, ate a tuna sandwich, went home. Honestly, it was so much better than I had expected, just did the gargling with salt water for a few days to help it heal, ate relatively soft food for the first week. Now I know it can be much worse than that, but you could be one of the lucky ones like me.

I love this
This is what I'm hoping for
One of those lucky strikes. I had that with my middle section. Home next day. On the beach the day after for a small walk. I felt so freaking lucky

Going to stay on top of pain relief and make sure I rest up. Hard with three kids. My mum said she will come over to help me too which would be really good

*vaping, not being!

I thought that

I'll stop vaping, it's been a crutch as I stupidly picked smoking back up again through the summer after five years of not smoking. I was having a hard time.
I can stop the vaping. It will make my life less strsssful afterwards if I quit before then

@stopbeeping I had all 4 out with a general - they were impacted too.
They cut through the gum on the outer/cheek side.
When you come round, you'll feel absolutely fine (possibly even better than that!) don't be fooled.
By the time I got home I was vomiting blood then I crashed on the sofa and slept/lost the evening and all night.
I looked like a chipmunk for a few days with some bruising and couldn't open my mouth/eat anything for nearly a week.
Yoghurt, soup and chocolate buttons only.
I really think you will need help with the kids.
Rinsing your mouth with warm salty water really does help the healing process...and the stitches dissolve/break off quite easily after about 10 days/2 wks.

@snowbellsxox mine were too...I did lose a very tiny bit of sensation right at the corner of my mouth, but I don't notice it any more.

Did wonder this, the dental block will fool me I thought

When I had tonsils out I did the same
Huge vomit full of blood and scared myself silly
The nurse said here's the alarm if you need me when you get changed. I looked at her like why on earth would I need that? I bent down and was completely dizzy and threw up all over the place whilst pulling the bell as hard as I could. I actually thought I was dying

You'll be fine, they give you decent painkillers. Definitely go for one GA.

I've been told they are too fiddly for sedation so I'm guessing I have to accept the GA
Every time I have one I weep and worry I won't come back alive
I try to tell myself it's the same process basically as putting someone on life support to try and make myself feel better

Does anyone know if removing them under sedation is an option instead?

I have been told it is as long as it's not fiddly
