Worrying about having 4 wisdom teeth out at once?

stopbeeping · 12/11/2022 15:42

Needs to be with a GA as my teeth are really impacted and sideways

I have three children aged 6 months to 6 years old. Worrying about how sore it is afterwards and the practicality of it being done twice. I don't really want two GAs if I could have the one.. but is my head going to feel like I've been stamped on?

Aibu to be getting worked up about this?

*vaping, not being!

@stopbeeping I had all 4 out with a general - they were impacted too.
They cut through the gum on the outer/cheek side.
When you come round, you'll feel absolutely fine (possibly even better than that!) don't be fooled.
By the time I got home I was vomiting blood then I crashed on the sofa and slept/lost the evening and all night.
I looked like a chipmunk for a few days with some bruising and couldn't open my mouth/eat anything for nearly a week.
Yoghurt, soup and chocolate buttons only.
I really think you will need help with the kids.
Rinsing your mouth with warm salty water really does help the healing process...and the stitches dissolve/break off quite easily after about 10 days/2 wks.

@snowbellsxox mine were too...I did lose a very tiny bit of sensation right at the corner of my mouth, but I don't notice it any more.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 12/11/2022 18:39

Two tops wisdom teeth and two bottom incisors taken out under GA, the other wisdom teeth had been taken out previously due to previous surgery..
I had swelling as expected, pain controlled by paracetamol. Food was mainly soups for a few days, scrambled egg. Soft, easy to slide down foods.
My face was bruised on one side but not too bad, although I did look like Humpty Dumpty.

Huntswomanonthemove · 12/11/2022 18:39

You'll be fine, they give you decent painkillers. Definitely go for one GA.

WeRateSquirrels · 12/11/2022 18:40

I had four out at once, all on bottom jaw (still got three more on the top). It was awful - face swelled up massively, couldn’t open my mouth, the drugs knocked me out and I was in a lot of pain even after all the painkillers. Couldn’t look after DS who was four at the time, and definitely couldn’t drive. I was pretty ill for a week and lost a load of weight. I really hope yours goes more smoothly OP! I also didn’t get full feeling back on one side of my mouth/tongue for several months.

hesbeingabitofadick · 12/11/2022 18:41

@snowbellsxox I think you should consider the general. The anaesthetist and the recovery nurses are very experienced. I've had surgery on my mouth 3 times under GA. For the last one, I was worried too (I'd had a bad experience with spinal surgery in the interim) but was reassured and they kept a v close eye on me.
Hopefully that reassures you.

Ruizy · 12/11/2022 18:58

Does anyone know if removing them under sedation is an option instead?

MeridianB · 12/11/2022 19:02

I had all four under GA, too. It was totally fine. Bit groggy next day, bit sore, but really not that painful. I had no bruising or swelling - my surgeon told me it was unnecessary.

mumofthree22 · 12/11/2022 19:02

I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time under GA - had to have soup and soft food for a few days but with painkillers I was ok after a few days.

AChickenClucks · 12/11/2022 19:12

Everyone's different, OP. But from personal experience, I had all 4 of mine dug out at age 16 under GA - and yes, I looked like a hamster! (But I'd spent 4 years having brace work done, so if my wisdom teeth had been allowed to come through, that would all have been undone)

But I was riding rollercoasters at Alton Towers less than a week later! It's not as bad as you think, as long as you follow the advice with rinsing, and don't dislodge the clots in the wounds (which lead to dry socket).

A tip - rinse (gently) with warm salt water. Tastes awful, but really does do the trick. Soft food, soups etc for the first day or two. And definitely no poking around the wounds with your tongue - have I mentioned that will lead to dry socket?! If you have stitches they'll (probably) be disolvable ones (and you'll be picking them out of your food after about 7 days or so, sorry, TMI!!!)

But you'll be ok generally, honestly. You really don't want them taken out when you're awake, just focus on that! You'll go to sleep, and then wake up feeling a bit sore and looking like a hamster with bruised cheeks, but honestly, I had no issues at all after I was discharged.

Good luck!

Snozzlemaid · 12/11/2022 19:21

I had all 4 out at once under GA.
It was fine.
My bottom two were impacted so I had stitches and I was a bit bruised and swollen along my lower jaw for a few days. Ate soft food for a couple of days but with regular painkillers it wasn't too bad.

Hairyfairy01 · 12/11/2022 19:26

I had all 4 impacted / sideways wisdom teeth taken out at once under GA. Dh picked me up from hospital a few hours later. We then went to home bargains I believe and I was in work the following day. Felt like someone had punch my jaw, but otherwise fine, no bruising or anything. And I'm not someone who has a low pain threshold, epidural labours both times! I think everyone is different to be honest.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/11/2022 19:28

I had this when I was 19 and I was in bed doped up pn codeine and diclofenac for four days. I lived at home then though without a kid.

StaceySolomonSwash · 12/11/2022 19:28

I had all 4 out in one go. If you can guarantee you can have 2 days in bed straight afterwards then go for it. Your face will feel like you've been hit by a bus, you will have a lot of bruising and you will want to just lie in bed and feel sorry for yourself. That said, recovery is quick and you won't need to go through it again.

I ate a lot of yoghurt during those two days.

Brotherlove · 12/11/2022 19:29

i had all 4 under GA. had a McD on the way home...no brusing or swelling, and carried on as normal. (just no very hot/cold drinks for several hours)

SE13Mummy · 12/11/2022 19:29

I had three wisdom teeth removed at once with local anaesthetic. They were impacted but not doing anything dramatic such as growing sideways. My mouth felt out of sorts for a few hours but was well enough to have a mild curry for tea that evening.

Fifthtimelucky · 12/11/2022 20:10

I had all mine out at the same time. 3 of them were no problem but it seemed like they had had trouble getting all the root out with the other and I felt very battered and sore afterwards.

I had it done during half term and I booked the week off so I didn't need to worry about work and school. My mother came to stay to help look after the children who were 4 and 2, while my husband took me to the hospital (about an hour away because we had moved house since I had first gone on the waiting list).

I was on strong painkillers for a few days, but it was all because of the digging around that one troublesome tooth. I didn't like the general anaesthetic though, so I definitely wouldn't have wanted to do that twice.

I had 4 out at once! It was totally fine and very quick recovery, no complications but I did spend a night in hospital.

JosephFrancis · 12/11/2022 20:22

I had all four out at once under a sort of half sedation. I was awake but I don't remember much about it. I didn't feel it, but I do remember bits of it.

Afterwards it felt like I'd been punched in the mouth. It was rough, but I was glad I did all four at once instead of having them done in pairs. One recovery time!

JosephFrancis · 12/11/2022 20:27

Oh, and yes, I had bruising but it was on one cheek and around my jaw. They had to break two teeth into bits to get them out but the others came out whole. I remember them holding my head down hard and a strong pulling sensation in my mouth. But not pain.

I did not eat soup. Or mushy food. Soup and mush flood the mouth and you don't want ANYTHING touching those stitches. You shouldn't get dry socket as the gums should be stitched over, I should think. All four of mine were stitched over. I didn't eat stuff that was salty, citrusy or drink anything hot or fizzy for about a week. But other than that, I was alright. Had heavy duty painkillers and swilled corsodyl about my mouth a few times a day to prevent any infection.

TwiceTwiceBaby · 12/11/2022 20:30

I had all 4 out with a local, so totally awake and aware. It was very odd as I felt the pop as each one was pulled out! But honestly, all I had was paracetamol afterwards and was fine the next day. No bruising or anything. Best of luck 🙂

@DeltaAlphaDelta79
This is really reassuring
I've had kidney stones too

I thought I was dying

It’s nothing like as painful as kidney stones or labour. More like you’ve been punched in the face several times and it’s all achey and sore and swollen, tender all over . Ice packs help with the swelling which helps with the pain.

You will need to rest for a couple of days afterwards, also you will need to recover from the GA. Your mouth will be sore when you eat for about a week - 10 days but you will be fine with soft foods ( No straws! ) .

You need to arrange help with your baby and toddler. you might be fine with just the 6 yo if they are at school all day and can then be parked in front of CBeebies.

Don’t be a martyr . If you have a baby I’m guessing the father is still Around so he needs to take a couple of days annual leave and look after his own kids. They won’t even let you have the op if you don’t have an adult to stay with you for at least 24 hours, even without a baby.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 12/11/2022 20:34

I had all four out at once when I was 21. It was fine. I had painkillers for a couple of days but I was eating ploughman’s lunch three days later (admittedly not the best choice and in hindsight would have chosen something less crunchy!)
You heat horror stories and I was all set for one of my own but honestly, it was nothing really.
Not a patch on childbirth or dislocated bones.

DinkyDaisy · 12/11/2022 20:38

I had all 4 out 35 years ago. Sedated and giggly throughout with whatever they gave me... Spaced out...

Greydogs123 · 12/11/2022 20:38

Had all four out at 18 and I was in a lot of pain for a couple of days - moving my head too much made the gums throb like mad and I was very much reliant on my four hourly paracetamol and ibuprofen and sitting quite still. After a couple of days it was uncomfortable, but bearable. Lots of soft food, not too hot, not too cold.
