Worrying about having 4 wisdom teeth out at once?

stopbeeping · 12/11/2022 15:42

Needs to be with a GA as my teeth are really impacted and sideways

I have three children aged 6 months to 6 years old. Worrying about how sore it is afterwards and the practicality of it being done twice. I don't really want two GAs if I could have the one.. but is my head going to feel like I've been stamped on?

Aibu to be getting worked up about this?

My brother had this. Think he took a whole day off work next day and slept the whole time. You need that sleep after a general. He was surprised at how much his jaw ached - from being held open for the length of the operation. He didn’t have 3 kids to look after and had my parents running about after him instead! So I think, if you can, try to arrange some short term care for kids, even for 24 hours, just to let your body have the rest it needs.

@DeltaAlphaDelta79

Soup used to make me cry as a child if it was for dinner 🤭 so I hear you on that one

I am ashamed to admit I Vape as well. Wondering about dry socket ..

Do you really need to have them out? Two of mine are impacted and sideways but the dentist says as long they aren't causing any pain she'll leave them alone. My DH has one completely impacted and has been told it's too near to a nerve to safely remove. Are you having issues with the teeth?

I’ve had 4 wisdom teeth out in one go under GA, and I’ve had 3 csections so can compare! My head didn’t feel stamped on at all, I had impressive swelling and bruising along my jaw for the following 2 weeks, was able to eat after a few days. I then got an infection and that really messed me up and what I could eat etc, but the procedure and recovery itself was fine.

Noooo you poor thing
Infections really really make you feel awful

Did you have to take metronidazole? It's such a bastard of an antibiotic

No straws! Dental soft is fine. I had dental surgery Wednesday under IV sedation.

I had just my bottom ones out. My face was black and blue and swollen like a pumpkin lantern. I couldn't go out for a week and was in so much pain.

I few years later I had the top ones out. It was slightly uncomfortable for a day.

Get the lot out at once and get it over and done with.

Nooooo

Did you take painkillers?

Don’t use a straw ! It can give you dry socket

Yes I was told not to use a straw when I recently had a broken tooth extracted. It can dislodge the blood clot that forms.

Hmm should we arrange for them to go to the in-laws? My parents are abroad

My husband is fantastic but I do go to the baby at night and the elder two are very boisterous boys it's loud in the house and I remember I was indeed exhausted after the 4 or 5 GAs I have had

Interesting about the jaw.. mine really hurt after I had my tonsils out too

I had 3 out. The 4th would be a few yrs later. My dad ran me home from the hospital and I vomited blood I swallowed. Thought my throat was cut. Was ok after that. Just sore gums for a couple of days

Ruizy · 12/11/2022 15:57

My ds is 13 and having four molars out under ga which I assume will be similar ?

Yes they really ache which is not nice and they have pushed my middle bottom three teeth right over each other

My mum had something like 6 teeth taken out as she had no space in her mouth and my sister 4 I think
I can't clean them and I've gotten a cavity on one of them too. They also give me ulcers on the inside of my cheeks

But I'm wondering if it's better to deal with that than to have them out

I had 3 out under GA, 1st day was groggy so you may need help with the kids. I could eat, but had a soft diet for a few days and lots of milkshakes/soup. I kept a notebook so I could keep track of when I had taken my painkillers. My bruising was under my jaw and a bit on one cheek, I didn't get black eyes. I would recommend just getting the 1 GA and get it over and done with. I didn't get dry socket after my GA surgery, but did when I just had the one out under local anaesthetic, this was my fault though as I used a straw to drink!

bridgetreilly · 12/11/2022 15:57

Just stop panicking. It will be completely fine and much better all done in one go.

rafanadalsarms · 12/11/2022 15:57

I had all 4 out then did a shift in a care home straight after. I was 23 though. No pain after. Ate pretty much normally the next day. So much better than the pain before 😘

I was told not to smoke after as that can cause infection and dry socket, so I assume vaping will be the same.

Does dry socket hurt?

Assuming you’re in the U.K. it won’t be split over two GAs. Partly because it doubles anaesthetic risk, and also because it doubles costs. So put it out of your mind - it’s not an option.

I work in Dental and although not my area anymore, I used to work GA lists for extractions. This is correct, they will only do it in the one go because of the risk of anaesthetic. Its better to get it all over in the one go, they will check you have help at home for the day/24 hours after you have had it done because of the anaesthetic. In my opinion it won't be very different having the four in the one go when performed under GA. Keep up with salt water mouthwashes afterwards to keep sockets nice and clean. Alternating between ibuprofen and paracetamol will help with pain and swelling, providing you can take these medications. Hope it goes well for you OP and you have a quick recovery.

Onnabugeisha · 12/11/2022 15:59

I had all four out with laughing gas and novocaine injections. Don’t think they do that anymore though. Two were impacted and pushing up under and into other molars. The other two were partially erupted but deformed.

I had no dry socket. No black eyes. No serious pain. Just drooled on myself and slurred like a drunk the first day due to numbness. Back to work the next day and all good. Followed the after care religiously though.

@121gigawatts

Really helpful information thanks so much
I can't take ibuprofen my stomach is destroyed after using diclofenac long term and even 200mg of ibuprofen puts me on the floor but it's a shame because it's a great drug

I had 4 taken out under GA about 25 years ago. Was in hospital for two nights. Was a rather positive experience. Mind you my face was rather swollen and black eyes. Painkillers and antibiotics and a straw will be your friends for a week after.

billy1966 · 12/11/2022 16:03

Plenty of drugs with a crossover on timings.
Pineapple juice is good as an anti inflammatory.

You will feel rough so you need the children looked after for at least the first couple of days.

Foods must be soft, no bits that can get stuck.

Smoothies with protein powder were fast and easy to make.

Follow the instructions to the letter and you will hopefully heal well.

Best of luck to you.

queenofthewild · 12/11/2022 16:03

I was living overseas when I had mine out. Only 2 days of pain relief. They told me any more would be addictive. So mostly paracetamol that didn't really help at all.

A lot of the bruising was in the "hinge" part of my jaw. I was so swollen that opening and closing my mouth was impossible.
