Worrying about having 4 wisdom teeth out at once?

stopbeeping · 12/11/2022 15:42

Needs to be with a GA as my teeth are really impacted and sideways

I have three children aged 6 months to 6 years old. Worrying about how sore it is afterwards and the practicality of it being done twice. I don't really want two GAs if I could have the one.. but is my head going to feel like I've been stamped on?

Aibu to be getting worked up about this?

Does dry socket hurt?

Yes! Which is why it's important to read the aftercare leaflet they give you and also to remember to rinse with hot salty water the day after your surgery. The infections I used to get from my wisdom teeth were more painful than the dry socket though, so I was glad to be rid of my wisdoms.

ShiningStarQueen · 12/11/2022 16:05

I had two out at once with no GA and it was OK. The woman in Tesco must have thought I was a complete nut job when I tried my hardest to ask where the satsumas were afterwards but I just sort of dribbled out of one side of my face. Not a good look 😆

Dental techniques have come a long way. Much gentler than the past, you’ll be fine.

Garman · 12/11/2022 16:07

Can't remember what antibiotics I took but they don't really ever have an effect on me. I couldn't eat after the infection because my stitches burst and was agonising for a week or so after.

Agnes2507 · 12/11/2022 16:08

I had 4 out at once (2 wisdom, 2 molar) on all sides of my mouth (top, bottom, left right!). It was over 10 years ago now, but I can't remember the pain or recovery being that bad. Couldn't eat much for a few days that's all. And I'm the biggest wimp ever, so if I managed it fine anyone can. I just remember feeling relieved that I wasn't in pain from the wisdom teeth anymore!

PigsEnigma · 12/11/2022 16:08

I had all four out at once a few years ago. Spent weeks worrying about it. I was uncomfortable at most for a day or two then pretty much back to normal after that. I had the soups I'd made in preparation in the freezer for months after as they weren't really needed. The pain of having braces tightened was far worse!

flipperdoda · 12/11/2022 16:09

I had three out under local anaesthetic in a dental practice about 5 years ago, paracetamol and ibuprofen for a few days and it's difficult to eat (although managed a full meal about four hours after! Not a squishy one) but doable. I was at uni and had it done near parents so stayed there overnight but got a train home the day after and it was fine.

In terms of other surgeries, I've had wrist, knee, and two keyhole surgeries and the wisdom teeth were a drop in the ocean in comparison.

Prep some food beforehand as you'll be groggy from the GA but you'll be okay pain-wise if it goes to plan!

(At least one of mine had to be broken to get it out too)

Splitsplat · 12/11/2022 16:09

I was very bruised from this but had general so was very woozy. You won’t have that with gas and air. I think I felt ok after about a day but looked weird!

fallfallfall · 12/11/2022 16:12

Several posters have mentioned rinsing. My recent info said no rinsing x 24 hours, followed by 7 days of gentle “swishing” as to not disturb the healing. Peridex mouth rinse. Myself Wednesday and the kids 20 yrs ago also had dexamethasone steroid tabs x 2-3 days.

tsmainsqueeze · 12/11/2022 16:16

I have had 3 removed individually , 1st one terrible , inexperienced dentist who i think was a bit out of her depth , i would choose giving birth over that one ,but other 2 were totally different ,so much easier.
If i had to choose now i would definitely have all out at same time.
Keep on top of your pain relief ,eat yoghurt ,soup etc for a few days , you'll feel better in no time.
I have experienced a dry socket ,ouch!! but instantly fixed when packed by dentist.

Oinkypig · 12/11/2022 16:20

If you are in the UK even if you are finding it privately no decent surgeon would give you 2 GAs to have them out in two lots because the risk and post-op problems x2. really the recovery from 4 doesn’t make it that much easier or reduce the risk of post-op infection/issues. If you think about it you could one side done, get a dry socket and then have to repeat the surgery and could send up with dry socket again prolonging the length of time for post-op recovery. All 4 sockets will heal concurrently. It’s not 1 tooth=1 week, 2 teeth =2 weeks etc.

You’ll get LA while you’re under GA, probably antibiotics.

Having 4 wisdom teeth out under GA is probably one of the most common oral surgery procedures carried out so really please don’t worry too much!

if you really wanted you could have sedation (you won’t be able to turn up on the day and ask for sedation you’d probably have to be referred on to a specific dental sedation service) then they would only be able to do one side but this is related to the length of time the sedation lasts rather than a surgical/recovery issue.

OldTinHat · 12/11/2022 16:28

I had all four out under a GA. I won't lie, my face hurt like buggery for days afterwards and I couldn't eat at all.

Get childcare and lots of smoothies and soup. And straws. Better all out at once than going through it twice though imo.

loveisanopensore · 12/11/2022 16:34

Had 4 out under GA out last month.
The worst part was the side affects from the pain relief. Three days after I had a night of vomiting and diarrhoea.

CarPoor · 12/11/2022 16:39

4 wisdom teeth isn't 4x as bad as one. The pain will last just as long whether you have 2 or 4. It's not ethical to do it across 2 GAs, even if you are paying privately. Think of it this way it's one heading period rather than 2. Over 2 GAs is 2 periods of recovery

You won't be able to vape afterwards for 7 days as it impairs healing and risks a dry socket.

You will be sore, you will be bruised and swollen. But it's nothing that painkillers and rest can't deal with. I've never seen a black eye after a wisdom tooth so don't work yourself up into a panic

AliMonkey · 12/11/2022 16:40

I had all four out at once under GA. DS was about four months old, I was still breastfeeding. I had the op, came round from the GA, fed DS, ate a tuna sandwich, went home. Honestly, it was so much better than I had expected, just did the gargling with salt water for a few days to help it heal, ate relatively soft food for the first week. Now I know it can be much worse than that, but you could be one of the lucky ones like me.

KnottyKnitting · 12/11/2022 16:42

I had all four wisdom teeth out under a general when I was in my late teens. Apart from being a bit sore for a few days I really don't remember it being bad at all. Certainly no black eyes or bruising and mine were very impacted.

Sickandtiredofbeingsick · 12/11/2022 16:45

I’m due to have my two impacted lower wisdom teeth out next month under GA. Having them out on the advice of my dentist because they are causing me to bite the insides of my cheek, as well as the surrounding gums occasionally swell and are painful (I’m also concerned about the pockets getting infected in the future, even though I water floss etc.). Am going private because the NHS only want to take one out, not both- the private maxillofacial surgeon I saw said they both need to come out as he wouldn’t advise them to be taken out separately (due to the GA risks, I’ve already had one this year and 4 previously throughout my life). He’s told me I’ll be well dosed up with painkillers and antibiotics afterwards (something I wouldn’t have had on the NHS for a start!). I’m not looking forward to it and I will be anxious about the aftercare so I avoid dry socket, not planning on eating much, just enough to be able to take the prescribed medicine with. Definitely avoid straws at all costs!! The way I’m looking at it is, once they are gone, they are gone and you won’t have to deal with the pain from them anymore! Hope it all goes well 💐

TheHateIsNotGood · 12/11/2022 17:33

All 4 out at the same under GA and it was absolutely fine. I was expecting the worst but felt surprisingly ok. And of course, much better later on as the impacted wisdom teeth were gone!

mdh2020 · 12/11/2022 18:13

I had all four out in hospital under GA - all at once. No bruising but mouth was very sore for 2-3 weeks. You will be able to look after the DC but will need yoghurts, soups, humus, and the like. I don’t remember much real pain after the op.

PriamFarrl · 12/11/2022 18:19

I had all four out under GA. The problem I had at the time was that I had a live in job. I was only 18 or so though so was up and about after a day. Because of where I was living/working my meals were in house, so I had to eat what I was given.

Ahnobother · 12/11/2022 18:26

I had all four out. Three children under 7 at the time, youngest was 2 1/2
Take it easy for the day after because of the GA. I found the painkillers so strong I didn't drive the next day or two but I needed them at night as it was sore to lie down on my cheek.
Otherwise not so bad. I'd definitely prefer once rather than twice though.

snowbellsxox · 12/11/2022 18:27

I'm having the same done so following
Had mri scan for bottom ones as they're so close to nerves and high risk

snowbellsxox · 12/11/2022 18:31

Are you being put to sleep did you say? I'm nervous if I have to have this I won't wake up
I'm going to ask for just numbing
I've had teeth out before just under normal injection just had a lot of it

newtb · 12/11/2022 18:32

DD had all 4 of her wisdom teeth removed about 3 months before her bac. She was fine, no problems at all. In the same year she had an adenome removed, too, which also was fine.

TimidOwl · 12/11/2022 18:37

It's really not that bad. The pain from impaction/infection is far worse than the after effects of most straightforward dental surgery. I was just really hungry and sleepy afterwards. You probably are going to find not being worse.
