Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

I really hate those large photo canvas prints where the whole family are dressed in the same denim jeans and white shirts and uncomfortably posing trying too hard to look relaxed, jolly and casual - WHY?

I’ve always felt a bit of a failure because we never had a photo like that. 😁

Mingmoo · 12/11/2022 18:32

I hate feature walls with a passion - just do the lot or if you want to use a strong colour, keep it to a large item of furniture like a wardrobe or a dresser. One wall decorated differently looks lopsided.

I also hate uncomfortable stools at kitchen islands (I don't understand why people like sitting around them although I love them for baking/storage etc. Just go and sit down somewhere comfortable if you want to chat.)

I hate feature ceiling lights instead of low lamplight.

I hate shiny kitchen floors and white kitchens.

I hate bad art or poorly constructed gallery walls.

I hate clutter and mess.

I hate bad curtains or blinds especially on bad windows.

I hate beige bathroom tiles. I also hate blue bathrooms with a nautical theme.

I have about five of the above list in my house at the moment...

Books purposefully on display for everyone to marvel at how eclectic and rich your tastes are. Gathering dust and you haven't read one of them in over 10 years
So passe.

Cuppasoupmonster · 12/11/2022 18:34

Oh and those big shiny white tiled floors, just awful

SmudgeButt · 12/11/2022 18:34

OH keeps suggesting we get one of those velvet paintings showing dogs playing poker. I like to think he's joking.

AlbertaAnnie · 12/11/2022 18:36

Any kind of sign starting “in this house we……” - absolutely grim 😬

AlbertaAnnie · 12/11/2022 18:37

Glass topped tables, chrome, bling

Tulipomania · 12/11/2022 18:38

Plastic garden furniture pretending be rattan or wicker.

Arty studio family group photographs on the wall.

A TV in every room.

but two rolls of wallpaper or a tin of paint cost a lot less than new furniture

oh and I just hate kitchen island full stop - take up too much space

I'd think it was really odd if I walked into your house and didn't see any books.

I don't really care if/when you read them.

Glass topped tables, chrome, bling

I’m not keen on how this looks but I also find the acoustics too sharp when it’s hard, shiny etc

Prefer some wood and books etc to dampen and soften

BobbyBobbyBobby · 12/11/2022 18:40

I’ve just thought of something else I hate. Plain tiles broken up by a randomly placed patterned ones.

white walls, dark wood, plants and loud artwork and cushions

BobbyBobbyBobby · 12/11/2022 18:41

I don’t mind wisteria above a front door but I hate loads of stuff growing up walls .

Really surprised to see so many people mention mirrored furniture - not because they don't like it (it sounds hideous) but because I have never actually met anyone with mirrored furniture. Am also a Rightmove addict and haven't ever noticed it. Is it a trend just now?

It was a trend 4-5 years ago when I bought my house, all show homes had them.

Oh I would paint the furniture, not buy new... but you can pick up a pine wardrobe or dresser on eBay for not very much.

Pillow and cushion overkill. Bloody awful.

Tulipomania · 12/11/2022 18:46

We have big black squishy leather sofas in our TV room that are at least 30 years old. Best investment DH ever made (they pre-date me)!

ghostyslovesheets · 12/11/2022 18:48

@Mingmoo not sure I could fit a wardrobe in my living room!

I do up cycle things - have a beautiful drinks cabinet I repainted in the kitchen and a nasty old pine cupboard repainted in my bedroom but the sideboard in my living room (more of a cupboard) is beautiful old (60’s?) oak and I won’t paint it.

FlimFlam2 · 12/11/2022 18:55

The only thing I can find no merit whatsoever in is painted wood. Not a fan of very dark stained wood either, but it's better than painted.

Katypp · 12/11/2022 18:57

Not interior design as such but I have two which are very popular on a couple of homes Facebook pages I am on:

  1. Making a feature of washing powder, fabric conditioner by decanting it into bottles, jars and slapping a Cricut sticker on it in a italic script
  2. Hot chocolate 'stations'. Edible version of the bottlrs/jars above, usually on a shelf/tray/other decorative base, usually with the words Hot Chocolate Station somewhere and usually featuring lights. It's Christmas's apparently. A dust catcher in my eyes

I don't really care if/when you read them.

My books are in my bedroom, where I read them. I don't feel the need to prove I read books.
They've become a design feature rather, can't stand them colour coordinated either.
