Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

Furniture that's uncomfortable

LateAF · 12/11/2022 06:36

Not enough seating for everyone to sit comfortably.

I agree but sometimes it’s now possible due to the size of the space. I previously maxed out on seating for that reason in my small living room but ended up feeling like a contortionist with all my manoeuvring around sofas and armchairs.

*not possible

Range cookers

I want this style cooker now after using a Smeg one in an air bnb.

shrunkenhead · 12/11/2022 06:37

Grey everywhere
TV on wall
Huge TV
TVs everywhere/every room
Carpet
Gadgets
Speakers and wires
Ensuites
Plastic
No bookcases or books
Shiny kitchen cupboards (usually grey or cream)
Doors with glass in
Those silly balconies that you can't even get on they're so small - really don't see the point!
Feature walls/one wall with HUGE patterned wallpaper on
Door stops in kids' bedrooms (never understood this! Why aren't they allowed to close their doors?!)
Ornaments of faceless people supposedly depicting the family set up

BlackberryCat · 12/11/2022 06:37

I love my pampass grass!! I’m not actually a swinger but I like to think that my neighbors might think that I am.

I don’t like too much grey. I also judge people who arrange their books by color.

BlackberryCat · 12/11/2022 06:39

I just wanted to add that I think as long as people are happy in their homes, that’s all that matters. I know people often get upset after reading these kinds of threads.

CecilyP · 12/11/2022 06:41

Grey! So much grey that you think the photographs are black and white!

mycatisannoying · 12/11/2022 06:41

What I would describe as an 'Argos' living room. So a feature wall with red, black and white large flowers. Small black leather sofa. Matching red rug on the floor, etc.
So basically, a lack of originality and quality.

Greytea · 12/11/2022 06:41

Shutters
TVs mounted on wall.

Meraas · 12/11/2022 06:43

My house is white and I love it

What like emulsion white? I’d hate that, cold and clinical. A nutmeg white is nicer.

I also dislike:

Open plan spaces
tiled kitchen floors
grey kitchens
red kitchens
sinks in kitchen islands
pebble front gardens
black kitchen counters

WinterDeWinter · 12/11/2022 06:45

Upvc windows, especially in a period house. Especially Upvc windows where the plastic on the opening windows are thicker than the non-opening ones so it looks like a mish mash.

wallpower · 12/11/2022 06:46

Some things are used because they are practical though. I have shutters and love them because I have huge sash windows & get a lot of light. The shutters allow some light but I can shield some of it. Before I had them I would have to close my curtains if I wanted to watch telly in the mornings.

wallpower · 12/11/2022 06:47

yes I hate this, some UPVC can look fine though.

CoalCraft · 12/11/2022 06:55

I hate those extremely shiny marble floor tiles, especially in living rooms. Just so cold and unfriendly.

NameChangeLifeChange · 12/11/2022 06:58

I actually love seeing everyone’s different houses and how people express themselves through their design! Obviously there are some ‘looks’ I’d never have in my house but I don’t judge them. I also love how people make the most of design faux pa’s and make them cool (a friend inherited a pink ceramic bathroom suite and she’s made the room amazing around it and sort of vintage/kitsch).
Things I dislike:
New build homes never feel cosy to me. I prefer houses with more character but find the faux character also a bit sad (panelling, fake parquet floor etc)
Houses that are too matchy matchy, all done and don’t look comforting but look like a next catalogue
Houses where people have purposefully removed any character (looking at you MIL for knocking out all the nice chimney breasts for the tiny additional spade which isn’t even used!)
However many of our friends houses match this description and I would be nothing but complimentary as ultimately if people have worked hard to decorate their taste should be respected!

NashvilleQueen · 12/11/2022 06:58

That 'luxe' style. So lots of mirrors, terrible art and grey/silver velvet. Diamanté edging to things and those dining chairs with big rings on the back.

All that sort of stuff.

But ... each to their own and it would be dull if we were all the same.

IwishIwasSupermum · 12/11/2022 07:02

Shutters with leaded light windows, even worse 1930’’s style windows with the top openers that have some sort of decorative glass and shutters - it’s too much of a mismatch.
Period houses given a modern uplift with plastic pretend wood cladding and grey windows. Looks and is going to look so dated, much better to maintain or work with original style of house.

Zwicky · 12/11/2022 07:02

Hob on a kitchen island with a “feature” extractor fan

Shiny kitchens - esp dark grey but any other colour too.

Shiny carpets - again, esp dark grey. Like most people I am beyond done with grey everything

furniture that doesn’t fit the room - huge corner sofa and cinema size tv in small rooms - huge rooms with normal sized furniture pushed around the edge.

Wall decals. Fair enough in a kids room. Words are the worst. Especially the bossy instruction ones - Relax, bathe, eat etc.

plastic kitchen sinks.

huge white canvas with family members lying on the floor grinning at the camera.

rainforest showers

breakfast bars

I don’t mind if you’ve got no books. My books look like a junk shop and are in a spare room.

Katyy · 12/11/2022 07:04

Tv’ in the corner, they just look silly and don’t fit. Reproduction fireplaces especially in new builds. Oh and shiny laminate flooring.

W0tnow · 12/11/2022 07:06

Karate chopped cushions. Why?

MintJulia · 12/11/2022 07:06

Grey (too dreary )
All white (too cold)
Black furniture
Minimalism (uncomfortable & impractical for a family)
Clutter (there is a happy medium)
Laminate flooring in sitting rooms
venetian blinds
Short curtains
Shower curtains
Bean bags
Bright pine furniture

Watchthesunrise · 12/11/2022 07:06

Black shiny kitchens (fingerprint hell)
Grey faux wood floor panelling (cold)
Black pleather couches (absorb light and joy)
Rugs that are too small for the space (unbalance a room)
Synthetic carpet instead of wool (feet sweat)
Clutter that could easily be removed entirely (CD towers I'm looking at you)

Watchthesunrise · 12/11/2022 07:07

Oh and PVC joinery in period houses.

Karwomannghia · 12/11/2022 07:08

This is the exact thing I had in mind. Cream background with big red gold brown flowers and brown leather sofas.

I love wallpaper but not that kind. It genuinely puzzled me why so many seemed to like it.
