Am I missing a double meaning with this? Or should I be concerned that my friend is feeling low and I should reach out to her? It's an
unusual type of thing for her to do if she is publicly saying how she feels.

I would pick up the phone and speak to her.

GoodnightGentleBoris · 12/11/2022 04:51

If this is unusual behaviour then I’d reach out to her and see how she is

I will, I just wondered if I'd "missed" something and it wasn't what I thought it was.

It does seem very obvious she's feeling low, but sometimes I miss the obvious.

Thank you.

Or desperately needing help and didn't know how else to say it. Not everything is attention seeking.

I did say in my OP it is unusual, so no, she's not always been "like that".

I'm going to call her later this morning.

How unpleasant. If she was really struggling, how do you think this sort of comment would make her feel? I work with women who have been through terrible abuse as children that you couldn't imagine, and people call them attention seeking. It takes their childhood abuse and makes it worse. But they deserve attention. Would you call someone attention seeking if they had a physical injury and needed help?

Vikinga · 12/11/2022 06:40

Check that it is still there in the morning as it could just be a drunken post. But still work checking if she's ok. You're a good friend.

This is really nasty and unkind. I hate myself for agreeing with it.

AlwaysCleanYourHatBeforeGivingItToADentist · 12/11/2022 06:46

I think because you said it's out of character, give her a call. If she was always doing it, I'd be less inclined to react.

It may be attention seeking but sometimes that's the only way people know how to ask for help.

amylou8 · 12/11/2022 06:49

There's people on my FB that post this sort of drivel constantly, then wait for the 'U ok Hun?' comments. If that's not her then I'd definitely give her a call.

I think it was in the early hours, but even if drink induced she's obviously feeling low.

I will definitely call later on.

I'm going to say I saw it, even if she's taken it down because she was obviously feeling low at that time.

Not true. My brother has MH issues. He posts stuff like this when really low. Well done checking in on your friend. Shame there aren't more like u OP

QuebecBagnet · 12/11/2022 07:21

She might just be really pissed off with her parents rather than generally low but definitely still check in on her.

What's wrong with sometimes seeking attention? Do you post here in the hope of being ignored?

Bollocks. Lots of people with mental health issues post about nothing else. I know someone with complicated, extensive mental health issues and she posts almost every day about them. I had to try not to laugh once when she said that she rarely talks about her mental health conditions because, with no disrespect for her or the seriousness of the issue, she talks about them all the time. The fact she doesn't see that is one manifestation of her illnesses.

This is just the "suffer in silence or you're not really suffering" shit that discourages people from seeking help until it's too late.

What utter damaging bollocks.

The last thing my friend did was post on fb. Before she took her own life, leaving her children behind. Or was that an attention seeking stunt too? She often posted these things when feeling low. Desperation, I guess.

WilsonMilson · 12/11/2022 07:58

Posts like that make me cringe. As well as the inevitable ‘you ok, hun?’ responses. But, perhaps she is struggling, so do call her. Personally I find posts like that to be self indulgent drivel, but each to their own.

pilates · 12/11/2022 07:59

Whatever it is I would call her to check she’s ok

And your post here, not self indulgent at all? You posted it for the common good? It was an act of altruism?

curvymumma79 · 12/11/2022 08:06

As somebody who has only just last month lost a friend to suicide, I would always say 'make the call'.

A half an hour chat, just to let her know that you are there, could possibly make her day.

To those who say it's attention seeking - check yourselves!

(OP - im not suggesting your friend is suicidal)
