Since switching to an Audi, I’ve noticed people are a lot more aggressive toward me and less likely to let me out/in, thank me for stopping, let me merge etc.

I was musing about this to my friend and she said that because only wankers drive Audis/BMW’s etc.

Is this fair? We got ours just because it was the only car available at the time that matched all our needs and was in our budget!

Aibu to think this must be a popular way of thinking considering how different my experience has been on the road since the switch? I had a lovely Nissan Juke before and found most drivers in my city very considerate!

The trouble is they do have a rep, same with BMWs. I actually find Range Rover drivers the rudest. Best way to get respect on the road, drive a white van 🤣🤣

finallydones · 11/11/2022 23:45

I think the UK is full of people who have SUVs who aren’t actually skilled enough to drive a car of that size.

agree

finallydones · 11/11/2022 23:47

For me it's volvo drivers (those are much rarer where I am these days)

I drive a Volvo, we are the safe, consistent drivers!

Boooooot · 11/11/2022 23:47

Range rovers are the worst yes. My brother in law has one which says it all.

We wanted a Volvo. The new estates are gorgeous.

I have an Audi estate in a dull colour- when I'm driving it other people let me in, give way for me, etc and generally assume I know what I'm doing and seem to think I'm in the right.

I also have a white BMW - apparently it's very sporty-I've no idea DH; bought it and seemed very chuffed with himself. My teen DS is desperate to drive it but can't get insurance on it. Other drivers make a point of not letting me go first, even if it's my right of way. Some are actually quite aggressive for no apparent reason. And middle aged men in people carriers love to pull away at lights faster than me at traffic lights. It's really bizarre (I could leave them far behind by the next junction, but I very rarely bother) I've also had other drivers trying to race me on dual carriageway ways Hmm

So, I find Audi and BMW drivers are treated very differently by other road users. I avoid driving the BMW if I can help it.

I would consider a Nissan Juke driver someone who was either over cautious or not paying sufficient attention and likely to have a slow bump, which is why I would let them get on with what they want to do by hanging back. But then I had a dizzy colleague with a Nissan Juke who would drive into other cars in the staff car park:

Itisbetter · 11/11/2022 23:50

Van drivers are always kind to each other. When I drive my other car sometimes I forget and am shocked they don’t automatically help me out.

finallydones · 11/11/2022 23:50

@Boooooot I've turned into my mother as we had one growing up! 😆

stayathomer · 11/11/2022 23:51

I’ll admit I also slightly judge range rovers and land rovers when I know the people aren’t using them for the appropriate terrain type driving! Other than that no, but I do hate that so many people automatically pass out small cars!

finallydones · 11/11/2022 23:52

A relative has Ferrari & I have found you get a lot of attention in that plus men driving other cars tend to let you cut in, almost like they want to ogle the car!

RobertaFirmino · 11/11/2022 23:56

I only judge if it is clear that the driver cannot handle their vehicle correctly, if the car has eyelashes or if it is powered by fairy dust. FWIW, we've got an 02 Focus ST. It's in fab condition though and is frequently complimented (admittedly only by Ford enthusiasts).

Stopandlook · 11/11/2022 23:59

I only judge Audi drivers, genuinely I have had so many experiences with aggressive Aidiy drivers! That said, about 1 in 10 of them surprise me by being considerate.

CallmeAngelina · 11/11/2022 20:32

OK, I'll bite.
I drive a top-of-the-range Mercedes. There is no difference to the way other drivers react at all to when I'm driving dh's Golf.
Why would there be? It's not like it's a Bentley.

I don’t think it’s caused by envy about having a top of the range/flash car.

certain cars attract certain types - not necessarily to do with cost.

In my ( completely arbitrary) opinion, Mercedes drivers don’t drive like twats. VW drivers very sensible too.

audi drivers took over from bmw
drivers a few years ago as top twats. I’d also add Porsche Cayenne drivers in the twat pile. ( other Porsche drivers are fine!)

Tesla drivers used to be nice , but increasingly pompous and don’t like to let you cut into their lane.

Almost guaranteed a Prius will be driven with the situational and spatial awareness of an amoeba. Probably doing 48 in the middle lane of the M1 or stopping for green lights. Even if it doesn’t have taxi plates on I give them a wide berth, so I suppose yes I do judge. I’ve generally always had estate cars and have had BMW, Mercedes, Skoda and Ford cars and I don’t think I’ve been particularly treated differently. Estates aren’t particularly sporting or twatty so I think people probably assume I’m a middle aged man unlikely to be on the extremes of driving ability whereas I am in fact a woman in my early 30s.

Totally agree about Prius drivers! 😂😂😂

Mariposista · 12/11/2022 00:25

I don’t care what you drive as li ga s you drive carefully and you get from A to B safely.
however I do judge if people use the inside of their car as a dustbin. Crumbs everywhere, mud on back of front seats from shoes, rubbish everywhere, sticky seatbelts (you get the idea).

Boooooot · 11/11/2022 20:42

Yes we studied that in my psychology degree!

I wonder what it is about a BMW that attracts these sorts then.

I have a saying that I’m sure will not copied in ad campaign anytime soon.

“Audi… when you are too much of an asshole for a BMW”.

Here we also have Prius drivers that will inconvenience everyone just so they can max out their eco-stats, and of course the sanctimonious Subaru owners who are just trying to save the world.

This clearly confirmation bias… but yeah I’m comfortable with that. Mostly because someone is thinking about me in my SUV the same way.

StayedUpLateAgain · 12/11/2022 01:12

I totally judge. Gas guzzling unnecessary cars for people with mega insecurities. I hate the Range Rovers, nobody can see past them, they slow us all down and are planet killers. I drive a 1.0 engine, nice and small and can park without causing other people inconvenience.

Fattoushi · 12/11/2022 01:24

I cant tell one car from another, Couldn't care less either.

Although everyone knows about audi drivers. Did you ever hear the old joke,,,what's the difference between a hedgehog and an audi? The hedgehog has the pricks on the outside!

I'm sure youre perfectly nice though, OP

RainbowsMoonbeams · 12/11/2022 01:39

I don’t judge people by the car they have, but if you have two cushions on the parcel shelf or those stupid stickers of your family on the back, I do roll my eyes.

Squirrelvillage · 12/11/2022 01:45

Just to give you another perspective - we ended up with our BMW because it was the nicest to drive, after test driving a few. Really comfortable, just felt good to drive. The badge didn't mean anything.

I secretly try to spread joy while driving by letting people out etc.

Theala · 12/11/2022 06:43

Caterhamdriver · 11/11/2022 21:36

@Theala I drive a Dacia Duster, a Caterham, a mini convertible and an electric bicycle so don’t judge anybody. What a judgy person you are.

I'm intrigued as to how you think that listing the other vehicles you drive provides a compelling argument for not judging drivers of Dusters as incompetent? What does that prove? You could be equally incompetent at driving those other vehicles.

Theala · 12/11/2022 06:54

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 11/11/2022 23:08

Oops, that's me! I don't think I'm that incompetent. Grin

I only judge if someone does something dickish. Otherwise I'm usually oblivious to what make other cars are.

Not sure why the poster was picking on the OP getting an Audi. When I've looked for a second hand car with specific requirements pickings have been quite low. It's how we ended up with a Fiat Multipla once, or Ugly Cars as I call them. (Actually a very good and spacious car, despite appearances)

Do you toddle along windy country roads at 30k/m under the speed limit, braking sharply at every turn and with, as another PP so magnificently put it, "all the situational and spatial awareness of an amoeba" ? 🤔

It might be just the demographic of Duster drivers round these parts, tbh. 😁

AloysiusBear · 12/11/2022 07:00

I hate to stereotype but i see a lot of the following from audi drivers on motorways:

  • driving up your backside in the fast lane if you aren't doing over 80
  • queue jumping and changing lane at last minute to exit etc
  • changing lanes without signalling

I only judge the ones driving badly though

MavisChunch29 · 12/11/2022 07:03

I only notice when they're driving badly.

Stuck behind someone going 20mph in a 30 zone and random braking, unduly hesitant - often a Toyota Yaris.

Someone tailgating and flashing headlights on the motorway - Audi.

General aggressive and dangerous driving, cutting you up at roundabouts, driving while on mobile phone, close passing cyclists, bombing down narrow country lanes, parking in stupid places, blocking drives and causing traffic tailbscks- White Van Man

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/11/2022 07:14

I drive a seat Leon fr and I think they expect me to want to speed and I get more drivers up my arse than I did in my Peugeot 😂
