DH says this is gross

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

Are these scissors special tools for cutting food, ie kitchen scissors/food scissors, or they ordinary scissors that cut paper? What type of scissors are they? Because I can't imagine getting the pair of scissors from my desk draw next to the stapler, erasers, pens, ruler and stick-it notes, and using it to attempt to cut my way through an actual pizza.

Kitchen scissors, mate.

maplesaucewithbacon · 12/11/2022 09:18

Do you wash kitchen utensils before use?!

Well no but we only put the clean ones in the drawer, as we do for cutlery, when they have been washed up. Other utensils that aren't washed every time they have been used to make a meal, such as the bottle opener, live somewhere else in our house.

OP your DH's logic doesn't entirely stack up unless he washes his hands between shaking the food out of the packet and then touching the food, which is a nigh-on impossible way of operating . On the other hand I do think it is a bit grim and the FOOD scissors if you have them should be stored with the knives and washed in very hot soapy water or dishwasher each use, and the GENERAL scissors for packaging etc. that you don't wash as often should be a different pair.

More to the point is what else these (your) scissors are used for day in day out and how often they are cleaned.

YellowMeeple · 12/11/2022 10:20

I’m now wondering if it’s not usual to have kitchen/food scissors. In our house we have kitchen scissors stored with knives in the kitchen and washed after every use. Craft/wrapping/paper scissors stored with sellotape and stationery and bathroom scissors stored in the medicine cabinet. The scissors are not interchangeable- but I thought that was normal.

stuntbubbles · 12/11/2022 10:26

@YellowMeeple That’s how we do it too: kitchen scissors (two pairs, actually, in case one is in the dishwasher) in the kitchen. Another pair in the tiny utility for cutting flower stems. Stationery scissors with stationery stuff. Kids’ activity cupboard has their safety scissors. Bathroom has nail scissors, hair trimming scissors, and a tiny pair of Japanese baby nail scissors. Shed has garden scissors. I think some of the “scissors?! For pizza?!” outrage has to come from people picturing their wrapping paper scissors or something. But any visit to a kitchen shop or department reveals dozens of scissors options next to the knives.

The word scissors has lost all meaning to me now.

KittyMcKitty · 12/11/2022 10:32

@stuntbubbles wr are the same as you with multiple pairs of scissors specific to jobs - we can top you though as we have 3 pairs of kitchen scissors (in the cutlery drawer) 😂 as a pair of dressmaking scissors somehow became repurposed as kitchen scissors a number of years ago.

I don’t get the faux outrage the use of scissors seems to be generating - surely you just open cutlery drawer - remove - use - pop in dishwasher. It’s hardly chopping up a pizza with those red handles round tipped scissors covered in dried on glue and glitter.

personally I detest pizza cutters - they seem fairly useless, hard to clean and gimmicky!

@JennyNotFromTheBlock kitchen scissors, obviously! Is this not an implement people use on a daily? I have three pairs as they are always in the wash due to extensive use.

I have never heard of or seen people cutting food with scissors. Let alone daily. (I used to work as live-in help but have never experienced this.)

zingally · 12/11/2022 11:02

I would do the same thing without a thought!! Your DH is being an arse. He can do it himself next time.

Scissors are actually a great way to cut a pizza, and do work much better than a pizza cutter. :) You should try it!

ReneBumsWombats · 11/11/2022 20:31

Because you just slip the pizza off the tray/stone on to a board and cut it flat, without having to lift it, slip toppings and cheese around, handle it more than you need to, make it more complicated. It's...what it's for.

Scissors to cut pizza! I am still amazed. Clearly it's a thing, but I've never heard of it.

I am with you that its lots of faffing around with scissors. Similar reason why I often cut paper/cardboard etc with a craft knife and not scissors.

Plus the thought of scissors dirty all over is not pleasant to me. Guess if people chuck everything into dishwasher thats where its different. I wouldnt put scissors in a dishwasher, for more than one reason.

KittyMcKitty · 12/11/2022 11:42

@katepilar how are scissors being dirty any different from a pizza cutter being dirty? Intrigued as to your issues with putting scissors into a dishwasher! I put them in open so blades exposed and they was perfectly!

stuntbubbles · 12/11/2022 11:44

I really want to see videos of the “scissors are faffy” brigade cutting pizza to see wtf they’re doing… I’m picturing Edward Scissorhands gone haywire under a Noel’s House Party-style slime drop of molten cheese fondue.

I cut a lot of food cartons open with the kitchen scissors and they're fine to go in the dishwasher. Assuming they're clean, I can't see anything wrong with it from a hygiene perspective. Just...cutting pizza with scissors! Seems such a faff, your hand having to move down inside the cut along the whole diameter, all the lifting and shifting... and so strange!

I'll be sticking to my cutter.

Cutting the pizza with scissors is fucking wierd

FlirtyMelons · 12/11/2022 12:53

I have kitchen scissors, great for cutting packaging open, I use them for sausages also. I also have pizza scissors that came with a pizza slice shaped thing you can use as a guide to cut, the scissors have longer blades than usual kitchen scissors, they are brilliant!

YANBU, the kitchen or pizza scissors go in the dishwasher after use then back into the drawer, don't clean directly before use, surely that's madness or do the posters saying that clean cutlery and all other utensils? Then you'd have to rewash plates and cooking trays directly before using them, where does it end?

The plastic will be food grade or whatever, then packed in the cardboard box, chances of anything really dangerous on it are surely very slim, how could you live your life worrying about stuff like that?

Pandor · 12/11/2022 12:55

For people who seem worried about your hand being too close to the pizza, if you have dedicated pizza scissors like the ones in the picture I linked to earlier, they are shaped so your hand stays well above the pizza, and the bottom blade is almost flat so it slides nicely under the pizza as you cut.

They are great to use - I always reach for those first rather than the wheel cutter we also have in the drawer.

FlirtyMelons · 12/11/2022 12:55

They really are a thing, I am shocked kitchen scissors aren't part of every kitchen, I genuinely had no idea not everyone use them

I am always worried I'll slice my finger when using the wheel cutter lol

I honestly have no idea lol, I am so accident prone in the kitchen it's ridiculous. That's why I use kitchen scissors for everything, so much safer for me

Of course that's normal. Kitchen scissors, nail, hair, sewing, paper, toolbox, gardening.

I wouldn't say it's a worry, it's just an impracticality to have your hand going down the cut and I can see how it might cause things to slip or tear or get nudged. As a PP said, it's the same reason why a craft knife is often better than scissors too. Lay it flat, slice it out. What could be better?

Pizza scissors look a lot better for the job than normal kitchen scissors. The fact that they're designed to keep your hand above the pizza suggests that the designers realised it wasn't ideal having your hand travelling down right inside the cut.

But my cutter does the job perfectly with no trouble so I'm good. If the cutter breaks at some point and needs replacing, maybe I'll try pizza scissors. Not ordinary kitchen ones though. Not sold on that at all.
