To think this is unprofessional?

Doing a teams call to a room full of people with a full view of your unmade bed - I’m not sure it would be better if it was made. It was also someone quite senior.

Or aibu and that’s totally normal?

I had a work Zoom call with someone who works from a different company to me, knickers drying on an airer in the background! 😂

I don't think they wee very nice knickers either 😮.

Hahaha, that might have been my DH! He's in the spare room with clothes airer. Always wining about me hanging up the washing there. My daily reply: just blur the background, dude!

1000yellowdaisies · 09/11/2022 16:52

Yes unprofessional. I do teams calls in my bedroom when wfh, i have custom background with our NHS trust logo.... nobody is seeing anything in my room!

CambsAlways · 09/11/2022 16:53

Oh Starlight hilarious

Byelaws · 09/11/2022 16:57

I think the world is a better place when we let people be themselves in their own homes.

Unless you sell beds, beds are pretty unprofessional full stop. But so what?! Let it go

CulturePigeon · 09/11/2022 16:59

I agree.

There's 'not being Hyacinth Bucket' and then there's just squalid. Very few people want to see your unmade bed, your laundry basket or your dirty dishes. Pps asking why OP cares - well, I don't know why OP cares, but for me, these things make me think of the other person in an unpleasantly intimate way which I'd really rather not! It's a kind of 'over sharing'.

SkylightSkylight · 09/11/2022 17:01

Personally I'd find it a bit intimate & my mind would wander.... so yes, distracting!!

there are so many fake backgrounds now, so why would you ?

Was s/he dressed?
Maids day off maybe?

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/11/2022 17:14

That's disgusting. Surely they can move their laptop to their office room!?

girlmom21 · 09/11/2022 17:15

It wouldn't bother me. Makes no difference whether their duvet is flat or wrinkled.

Remagirl · 09/11/2022 17:15

I hate seeing peoples beds and bedrooms full stop on teams calls. Definitely blur or use background if you can't come up with a more professional backdrop to your call.

I hope this is sarcastic but I'm never sure any more Grin

StrawberryPot · 09/11/2022 17:16

I think people should maintain the same professional standards when they wfh as they would in the office. Presenting a messy unmade bed to colleagues/clients speaks volumes about that individual's lack of self-awareness and lack of professionalism.

shrunkenhead · 09/11/2022 17:17

Yet another reason why wfh just doesn't "work". People don't take it seriously enough to make the effort to even try to make it look professional.

MsFogi · 09/11/2022 17:17

I hate seeing beds (made or unmade) in the background of calls - it feels too intimate! Blur your background people!

WaveyHair · 09/11/2022 17:19

Unprofessional. There's a reason Teams provides a selection of background scenes, or even blurs the background image.

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 17:20

I agree, I don’t like it, I don’t want to see my colleagues beds, it feels quite personal. Just like if I visited their home I’d not wish to be in their bedroom. I honestly can’t understand why folks with this set up don’t just buy a cheap screen from Amazon to put behind them when on calls.

you can get them from cheap to more High quality

@girlmom21 you've lost me. Wasn't being sarky just thought the laptop could be moved to a desk area with the bookcase or whatever behind it. Assumed all the covid wfh-ers had a spare room set up as an office by now. Failing that they'd be back to work wherever they're normally based.

MysteryBelle · 09/11/2022 17:23

Fladdermus · 09/11/2022 16:13

I wouldn't do it. But DH takes his laptop down into the cellar to do zoom calls as it's quieter. I think it makes him look like a serial killer and it invades the privacy of all the spiders.

😂

Emm..nope

Since Covid companies have taken the excuse to never have me in the office.

And I currently have no bookcases as I can't yet be bothered to secure them to the wall.

To be fair most people I work with have a wall behind them. However as I have to use multiple laptops I have a wall, curtains or made bed as some of the laptops aren't powerful enough/have correct operating system to use a background.

pointythings · 09/11/2022 17:32

We're asked to blur or use corporate background.

Qazwsxefv · 09/11/2022 17:40

Non white people can struggle with a blurred background as the camera still can’t recognise them. Shit but that’s what it is, also if your on a phone then there are less features.

spare bedroom as an office to wfh!!! Lol. Covid means the weekly half day meeting they used to hire a meeting room for is now on teams as it saves money but as I have a shared office I need to do it from home from my phone. I don’t have a spare room so you get the sofa/kitchen table or if DH and the kid are home then the bedroom. If my employer wants a professional background they can 1. Pay for an office 2. Pay for a fancy laptop

blueshoes · 09/11/2022 17:41

There was a person (just on news, not my company) who had a sex toy in view on her shelf.

Apart from the wall, you can also angle your laptop so that it tilts to the ceiling.

This.

FinallyHere · 09/11/2022 17:47

This is why there is an option on Teams to blur the background.

And a soft focus option, too.
