To think this is unprofessional?

Doing a teams call to a room full of people with a full view of your unmade bed - I’m not sure it would be better if it was made. It was also someone quite senior.

Or aibu and that’s totally normal?

Bouledeneige · 09/11/2022 17:49

Yeah I probably wouldn't do that. But if the meeting was boring it would entertain me a bit and then I'd write something on MN..... Oh

beasmit · 09/11/2022 17:50

Tigofigo · 09/11/2022 15:20

Nah that's a bit gross. Blur the background FGS!

@TiTigofigo true

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/11/2022 17:53

I guess it depends on the culture in your organisation, but I would consider that very unprofessional and it certainly would not be acceptable in my work place.

BettyOBarley · 09/11/2022 17:53

Yes definitely weird!

Unless they'd done that thing where you hide yourself and didn't know you could see!

Basecamp · 09/11/2022 17:55

I'd think it was funny. It would also make me feel less guilty about having pjs on my lower half during Teams meetings

iftheshoeefits · 09/11/2022 17:06

I don’t understand why you give enough of a shit to comment.

👏👏👏 brilliant comeback.
Back to the thread, yes I'd say unprofessional if they knew the bed was unmade.

WaveyHair · 09/11/2022 17:56

Once upon a time I had a colleague who joined a call, with camera on, from his bed with his wife lying next to him.

Raised a few eyebrows...Confused

DatasCat · 09/11/2022 18:01

Has anyone else found that Teams backgrounds can occasionally ‘splinter’ and reveal stuff at the edge of your image?

😂

I wish my colleagues were more interesting.

I've seen people's cats, dogs, children and a bumbling cleaner. The toddlers either decide to join in by staring at the screen, or ignore everyone and go about their business of pulling apart the room.

SavingsThreads · 09/11/2022 18:03

Unprofessional, a bit. Gross? No.

But you say it wouldn't be much better if made. What would you like them the do with the bed?

Have you realised however, how many people have had to work from their bedrooms in the last few years especially? Or do you imagine everyone has spacious offices?!

HuggsBosom · 09/11/2022 18:06

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 17:20

I agree, I don’t like it, I don’t want to see my colleagues beds, it feels quite personal. Just like if I visited their home I’d not wish to be in their bedroom. I honestly can’t understand why folks with this set up don’t just buy a cheap screen from Amazon to put behind them when on calls.

you can get them from cheap to more High quality

Surely blurring your background or choosing a preloaded background on Teams etc would be cheaper and less space consuming than an actual screen? Confused

I think OP is being OTT that she wouldn't even like a made bed to be visible.

This is especially unkind to people in houseshares who have to work and sleep in the same room.

Queenmarie · 09/11/2022 18:08

I wfh from our spare room with a bed in the background, but I blur it!

It does strike me as unprofessional...

Funniest background I've been party to was an academic sat on his sofa (I work at an HEI) with washing drying in every conceivable space around him, on airers, the back of the sofa, hung up on the curtain rail behind him...

This ^^

Dragonskin · 09/11/2022 18:25

I've been in all company townhall where someone has presented with an unmade bed in the background - I can't recall what he talked about, just remember the dirty room behind him

mumda · 09/11/2022 18:27

I love seeing the chaos in other people's homes. Crowded bookshelf or top of filing cabinet.
But am unmade bed isn't nice.

lawofselfish · 09/11/2022 18:28

DWMoosmum · 09/11/2022 16:24

People have been forced to work from home to cut the overheads in offices. If you're working from your home, then I don't see what business it is of anyone if your bed is unmade. Personally I make my bed every morning which some people would find fault at also, but I think it's a bit invasive judging someone by an unmade bed in their own home.

It's not their home, it's their workplace between such and such hours.

PortiasBiscuit · 09/11/2022 18:30

That was me yesterday..

CantSleepCountingSheep · 09/11/2022 18:45

FinallyHere · 09/11/2022 17:47

This is why there is an option on Teams to blur the background.

And a soft focus option, too.

Where's the soft focus option? I look terrible on teams. Much better on zoom!

SilverPen · 09/11/2022 18:50

It's one of those things I wouldn't do myself but that would barely register if someone else did it.

MysteryBelle · 09/11/2022 19:09

Yes it’s unprofessional. Surely there’s a way to angle the camera so the bed isn’t in the background. An messy unmade bed is not something to have behind you in a business meeting. I wouldn’t do that for a Facetime with my mother either 😂

I guess it’s better than having a view of the bathroom with the toilet in all its glory 😅

This is hilarious. Enjoying this thread 🧵

Boxofsockss · 09/11/2022 19:14

I think it is unprofessional but honestly nothing surprises me in the work place any more.

Avrenim · 09/11/2022 19:14

About as unprofessional as a presentation we had from a senior manager where an image of a sparkling glittery pink pile of excrement was used as an image to inform us of the department's reputation in other parts of the organisation. The image is still burned on to my retinas weeks later. I started looking for another job fairly soon afterwards. I think the manager concerned is a bit too young to know who Gerald Ratner was.

echt · 09/11/2022 19:29

Possibly a different kind of job but when teaching online, in no way, by dress or background could the bedroom be suggested. Same rule for the students.

To me it's a bit like emails and how to write them: always write it like e letter then no-one will be offended. In this case, I'd see it as unprofessional to show the bedroom, bed made or unmade.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/11/2022 19:32

I don't understand why it's 'gross'. It's unprofessional and I suppose they didn't notice - I've been on a few zoom/teams where people involved didn't realise they weren't hidden/muted.
