To think this is unprofessional?

Doing a teams call to a room full of people with a full view of your unmade bed - I’m not sure it would be better if it was made. It was also someone quite senior.

Or aibu and that’s totally normal?

Of course it is unprofessional and lazy.

How hard can it be to angle your computer so it doesn't show your mess in the background...

shrunkenhead · 09/11/2022 19:42

I think "Zoom" and "Teams" has had its day. It was what had to be done during Covid for schools and offices but now it's time to get back to work/the office.
I'm reading more and more threads on MN about how "wfh" just isn't working anymore, this is a good example.

Very unprofessional and rather 🤑

This. Some people have no standards.

It's not their home, it's their workplace between such and such hours.

@lawofselfish it's their home. Unless the company is paying their council tax, rates, rents, mortgage, fuel bills etc, it's their home. If companies expect a work space to be presentable then they should be providing office space within the home. It's about getting the job done.

Nope.

shrunkenhead · 09/11/2022 20:00

@CapMarvel oh yes. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Lcb123 · 09/11/2022 20:01

It’s not ideal but unfortunately a lot of people have to work from their bedrooms. There’s a lot more unprofessional things you could do on a teams call…

LondonQueen · 09/11/2022 20:03

I'd have made the bed but that maybe the only place they have to work. I have an office at home but let's face it; the majority of people don't!

We used virtual call technology long before COVID emerged. Getting back in the office would mean very little work got done. It’s a seven hour round journey for me and similar for others. We’d also not have space for everyone.

Its hugely unprofessional. Someone should have said something off call via a direct message. I think people do forget a call is still a work environment and a business meeting sometimes. I’ve certainly had people turn up for 121s or team meetings with entirely inappropriate clothing - scrappy vests, underwear on display, in onesies etc. They just think as they are at home it’s not really a work meeting, I think.

not at all. My team is about 18 people, spread all over 3 countries. We have used Teams and video conferencing for as long as it's been available, telephone conferencing before that. It is very useful and it's pushed by our higher-ups as a way to be more sustainable. It is very efficient.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/11/2022 20:19

People against WFH generally want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

pointythings · 09/11/2022 20:23

@shrunkenhead
I'm afraid you're wrong - WFH is here to stay in many organisations. The savings on the cost of office space are enormous, the technology works. There's also hybrid working which gives you the best of both worlds. Personally I am looking for a job that is office based and they are around, but that is my personal preference. Employers have learned that this is something they need to offer to get the best staff. We're not going back to the old ways, thank goodness.

@girlmom21 you've lost me. Wasn't being sarky just thought the laptop could be moved to a desk area with the bookcase or whatever behind it. Assumed all the covid wfh-ers had a spare room set up as an office by now. Failing that they'd be back to work wherever they're normally based.

You think most people who wfh have a spare room as an office? Where were these rooms magicked up from?

I don't have a spare room but can easily fit a desk in my bedroom. Between not having to do the commute and work having got rid of half the office space I'm quite happy wfh. I do make sure I have a background on so no one can see my bed though.

Navelgazers · 09/11/2022 20:56

I once had a meeting at someone's house with actual knickers and bra drying on the airer. They were clean however. But it was good to see their human side.

Mydogisanaughtyboy · 09/11/2022 21:13

It would embarrass me if my work colleagues saw my unmade bed via Zoom or in person - should be the same impact. WFH no excuse to appear untidy and sloppy. Sit somewhere else or go for a blur! Or just turn the camera off.

ThatsAboutEnoughOfThat · 09/11/2022 21:31

I only go to the office when I have time to socialise. When I am busy I work from home to get things done.

Unmade bed is a bad look. It is easy enough to whack a background on.

imnottoofussed · 09/11/2022 21:34

I can't blur the background on mine. Something about the laptop not allowing the correct version of the software. So I don't turn the camera on.

SeanMean · 09/11/2022 21:35

Awful and unprofessional!

Emmelina · 09/11/2022 21:38

Perhaps they didn’t realise their background hadn’t blurred. I would say I can’t imagine someone letting on that they live a bit like a slob but then I’ve seen FB marketplace posts

That's a very narrow-minded view. Some jobs can be done just as well or even better from home.

confusedlots · 09/11/2022 21:41

I was on a zoom call once and one guy was in a room which appeared to have a toilet in the corner. It was a bit of a weird set up, didn't look like a normal bathroom. Anyway, there were lots of people on the call, and at one point it caught my eye that he was leaning forwards against the wall in the far corner. Yes, he was taking a pee! It went on for ages and I was so completely shocked I had no idea what to do!

No one else seemed to notice. Then he came back and listened in to the zoom call for a while. And then he moved over to the sink and proceeded to have a shave!

Eventually one of the admin type people must have noticed and turned his camera off.

I still wonder if I dreamt it, but I definitely didn't! I imagine the guy has no idea what we saw, and hopefully he remembers to turn his camera off in the future!
