AWFUL NAMES TO CALL YOU CHILD...

I dont think there's anything people get more worked up over something that is none of their business than what someone has or wants to call their child.
With this in mind, I thought it might be fun for people to nominate some really bad names they've heard friends or relatives have given to these poor little children.... Whats the worst you've ever heard?
Who knows... this page might be inspiration for some pregnant ladies out there!
Have fun!

I currently work with some children whose names are a bit unusual

Star (girl)
Thierry (girl)
Kaitlyn, Katelyn and Caitlyn
Jambo (boy)
AJ (boy)
Tiana-Louise (must ALWAYS be said in full, not Tiana)
Charlie-Mae (girl)
Malisha
Kelan (boy)

I did do a double take at some of them at first, but the children themselves are so utterly delightful (Thierry is a terrific little girl, all smiles and sparkle) I can't possibly snigger at their names. They stop being funny when they're the names of particular people AFAIAC.

And I am a consummate bitch, everyone knows that

lottiejenkins · 29/01/2008 17:05

I thought Thierry was a male footballers name?

Greensleeves · 29/01/2008 17:06

Yes, it is - and now it's also the name of a lovely little girl I know. It wouldn't have been my choice - but it's her name, and for me that's reason enough not to sneer at it!

matildax · 29/01/2008 17:07

thierry henry, now theres a rather handsome bloke maybe shes his kid?????

matildax · 29/01/2008 17:08

i think its rather cute

lottiejenkins · 29/01/2008 17:09

I wasnt sneering! just said that the only other Thierry id heard of was a male!!

Slubberdegullion · 29/01/2008 17:10

NortherLurker, along the same lines I encountered a few Melenas when I was working in Oz. I had to restrain myself from saying "you do realise that in medical world melena is just the very very worst smell in the world ever?

(apologies to any parents of Melenas who inadvertantly thought it was a pretty name).

TheFallenMadonna · 29/01/2008 17:11

Greensleeves - I said something similar on another thread about teachers' reactions to children's names.

You may snigger or groan at the class list, but when you meet the children themselves, names mean really very little.

Greensleeves · 29/01/2008 17:11

sorry Lottie, didn't mean you specifically

StealthPolarBear · 29/01/2008 17:12

Nork-Lea

minouminou · 29/01/2008 17:15

DS' name provoked the biggest name-related tant since Rumpelstiltskin's in DP's childhood chum.
Do you know what? He still refuses to use it...calls him "The Stig" instead.

matildax · 29/01/2008 17:17

yep i agree madonna, you could call a baby a really lovely "acceptable" name, and he/she could be a selfish/horrid/cruel/rude kid. then the pretty/cool name fades into the distance, and you just think of them as a little brat
on the other hand you can have a child with a "wierd" name, and they could be lovely and this obviously shines through.

Kimi · 29/01/2008 17:24

I was in the park with DS2 the other week and he was playing with a Echo and a bliss, I thought they were beautiful names.

Ettenna · 29/01/2008 17:25

I worked with a Dick Siemens and a Dicky Glasscock. I've taught a Lilette and a Fanny. I also know a Kerry Hunt.

Personally ( and this is just MY opinion ) I dislike names that seem to be collections of random syllables, not 'names' as such.

But I'm getting on and uncool.

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 29/01/2008 17:30

My DH used to know a Polly Esther.

RGPargy · 29/01/2008 17:32

evenhope · 29/01/2008 17:47

Well DD2's middle name has already been mentioned in a bad way

Babies in our local paper this week included Precious Bird; Petal Darling; and sisters Ruby-Star and Dolly-Sky. (Do first names really need to be hyphenated?)

(Apologies if you are the mum of these girls)

MrsEi25 · 29/01/2008 17:54
